Three

19 verses

When Zechariah asks for a sign from his Lord, he is told that he will not be able to communicate with anyone for three full days and nights, except by gestures (3:41, 19:10). The Quran uses the number three to define spans of silence, precise measures of atonement, and intervals of waiting. It organizes the hours of domestic privacy in a household and sets a strict deadline for a defiant nation facing retribution.

How does the number three measure expiations and waiting periods? In matters of Islamic law and personal conduct, three often serves as a baseline for fasting and waiting. When a pilgrim performs Hajj but lacks the means to offer an animal sacrifice, they must compensate by fasting for three days during the pilgrimage, followed by seven days upon their return (2:196). As Salah al-Khalidi notes (al-Quran wa Naqd Mata'in al-Ruhban, 1/372), the text explicitly summarizes this calculation as "ten days in all." Similarly, if a person breaks a binding oath and cannot afford to feed ten poor people, clothe them, or free a slave, the required atonement is a three-day fast (5:89).

Family law also relies on this duration. Divorced women are instructed to wait for three monthly periods before remarrying (2:228), a timeframe ensuring that any pregnancy is not concealed. As al-Suddi explains (Mawsu'at al-Tafsir al-Ma'thur, 4/153), the term used for these three periods (quru') refers directly to three menstruations. In marriage, the number three is also the penultimate limit for polygyny; men who fear they will not deal fairly with orphan girls may marry two, three, or four other women, but are restricted to one if they cannot maintain equity (4:3).

What deadlines and schedules span three days or times? Beyond legal rulings, three days acts as a definitive boundary for divine signs and punishments. While Zechariah spent his three days of silence remembering his Lord and celebrating His glory at dawn and evening, the people of the prophet Salih faced a very different three-day span. After they defied God by hamstringing the she-camel, Salih delivered a final, unalterable warning: "Enjoy life for another three days" (11:65).

The number also regulates daily household rhythms. Believers are told that their slaves and prepubescent children must ask permission before entering their quarters at three specific times of day: before the dawn prayer, when garments are laid aside in the midday heat, and after the evening prayer (24:58). The text establishes these explicitly as three times for privacy, outside of which household members may move around each other freely.

Who are the groups of three? The text recounts several distinct groups defined by this number, from human factions to angelic reinforcements. During a critical moment of need, the believers were asked if they would be satisfied if God reinforced them by sending down three thousand angels (3:124). Centuries earlier, the Sleepers of the Cave sought refuge from persecution, staying in their cave for three hundred years, while some added nine more (18:25). Generations later, people guessing in the dark debated their exact number, with some claiming "the sleepers were three, and their dog made four" (18:22).

Among the companions of the Prophet, the number identifies a specific trio who failed to join a military campaign. The text describes the severe isolation of the three men who stayed behind: the earth, despite all its spaciousness, closed in around them. Their very souls closed in around them until they finally realized that the only refuge from God was with Him, at which point He turned to them in mercy (9:118).

2:196 Al-Baqarah

Complete the pilgrimages, major and minor, for the sake of God. If you are prevented [from doing so], then [send] whatever offering for sacrifice you can afford, and do not shave your headsuntil the offering has reached the place of sacrifice. If any of you is ill, or has an ailment of the scalp, he should compensate by fasting, or feeding the poor, or offering sacrifice. When you are in safety, anyone wishing to take a break between the minor pilgrimage and the major one must make whatever offering he can afford. If he lacks the means, he should fast for three days during the pilgrimage, and seven days on his return, making ten days in all. This applies to those whose household is not near the Sacred Mosque. Always be mindful of God, and be aware that He is stern in His retribution.

2:228 Al-Baqarah

Divorced women must wait for three monthly periods before remarrying, and, if they really believe in God and the Last Day, it is not lawful for them to conceal what God has created in their wombs: their husbands would do better to take them back during this period, provided they wish to put things right. Wives have [rights] similar to their [obligations], according to what is recognized to be fair, and husbands have a degree [of right] over them: [both should remember that] God is almighty and wise.

3:41 Ali 'Imran

He said, ‘My Lord, give me a sign.’ ‘Your sign,’ [the angel] said, ‘is that you will not communicate with anyone for three days, except by gestures. Remember your Lord often; celebrate His glory in the evening and at dawn.’

3:124 Ali 'Imran

Remember when you said to the believers, ‘Will you be satisfied if your Lord reinforces you by send-ing down three thousand angels?

4:3 An-Nisa

If you fear that you will not deal fairly with orphan girls, you may marry whichever [other] women seem good to you, two, three, or four. If you fear that you cannot be equitable [to them], then marry only one, or your slave(s): that is more likely to make you avoid bias.

5:89 Al-Ma'idah

God does not take you [to task] for what is thoughtless in your oaths, only for your binding oaths: the atonement for breaking an oath is to feed ten poor people with food equivalent to what you would normally give your own families, or to clothe them, or to set free a slave- if a person cannot find the means, he should fast for three days. This is the atonement for breaking your oaths- keep your oaths. In this way God makes clear His revelations to you, so that you may be thankful.

9:118 At-Tawbah

And to the three men who stayed behind: when the earth, for all its spaciousness, closed in around them, when their very souls closed in around them, when they realized that the only refuge from God was with Him, He turned to them in mercy in order for them to return [to Him]. God is the Ever Relenting, the Most Merciful.

11:65 Hud

But they hamstrung it, so he said, ‘Enjoy life for another three days:

18:22 Al-Kahf

[Some] say, ‘The sleepers were three, and their dog made four,’ others say, ‘They were five, and the dog made six’- guessing in the dark- and some say, ‘They were seven, and their dog made eight.’ Say [Prophet], ‘My Lord knows best how many they were.’ Only a few have real knowledge about them, so do not argue, but stick to what is clear, and do not ask any of these people about them;

18:25 Al-Kahf

[Some say], ‘The sleepers stayed in their cave for three hundred years,’ some added nine more.

19:10 Maryam

He said, ‘Give me a sign, Lord.’ He said, ‘Your sign is that you will not [be able to] speak to anyone for three full [days and] nights.’

24:58 An-Nur

Believers, your slaves and any who have not yet reached puberty should ask your permission to come in at three times of day: before the dawn prayer; when you lay your garments aside in the midday heat; and after the evening prayer. These are your three times for privacy; at other times, there is no blame on you or them if you move around each other freely. In this way God makes messages clear: God is all knowing, all wise.

30:4 Ar-Rum

in a few years’ time––God is in command, first and last. On that day, the believers will rejoice

35:1 Fatir

Praise be to God, Creator of the heavens and earth, who made angels messengers with two, three, four [pairs of] wings. He adds to creation as He will: God has power over everything.

39:6 Az-Zumar

He created you all from a single being, from which He made its mate; He gave you four kinds of livestock in pairs; He creates you in your mothers’ wombs, in one stage after another, in threefold depths of darkness. Such is God, your Lord; He holds control, there is no god but Him. How can you turn away?

56:7 Al-Waqi'ah

then you will be sorted into three classes.

58:7 Al-Mujadila

Do you not see [Prophet] that God knows everything in the heavens and earth? There is no secret conversation between three people where He is not the fourth, nor between five where He is not the sixth, nor between less or more than that without Him being with them, wherever they may be. On the Day of Resurrection, He will show them what they have done: God truly has full knowledge of everything.

65:4 At-Talaq

If you are in doubt, the period of waiting will be three months for those women who have ceased menstruating and for those who have not [yet] menstruated; the waiting period of those who are pregnant will be until they deliver their burden: God makes things easy for those who are mindful of Him.

77:30 Al-Mursalat

Go to a shadow of smoke!’ It rises in three columns;
