Slavery

23 verses

Instead of treating human bondage as a permanent economic fixture, the scriptural framework approaches it as an inherited crisis to be systematically dismantled through faith, wealth, and law. It weaves the liberation of captives directly into the core definition of righteousness. When detailing what makes a person "truly good," the text lists giving away cherished wealth to liberate those in bondage alongside believing in God, the Last Day, the angels, and establishing prayer (2:177). Emancipation is not left merely to individual charity; it is an institutional financial priority. A designated portion of all mandatory alms is legally earmarked specifically to free slaves (9:60).

When is freeing a slave required?

The framework guarantees a steady, continual release of captives by attaching emancipation to the legal expiation of common societal infractions. If a believer kills another believer by mistake, the required atonement mandates freeing a Muslim slave in addition to paying compensation to the victim’s family, unless the family charitably forgoes the payment (4:92). This mechanism applies even across borders; if the victim belonged to a hostile people but was a believer, the penalty is simply to free a believing slave (4:92). Emancipation also serves as the penalty for broken promises. The atonement for violating a binding oath is to feed ten poor people, clothe them, or set a slave free (5:89).

What are the rules for marriage?

Marriage to those in bondage requires consent and ensures financial rights. If a man lacks the means to marry a believing free woman, he is permitted to marry a believing slave, but he must obtain her people’s consent and give her a proper bride-gift (4:25). The text reminds believers to view these unions without prejudice, noting that God knows the depth of their faith and that all believers are "part of the same family" (4:25). The focus remains strictly on legitimate wedlock rather than secret affairs or fornication. Recognizing their socially vulnerable status, the text offers legal leniency: if a married slave commits adultery, her punishment is exactly half that of a free woman (4:25). Furthermore, marrying a slave is presented as a protective measure against bias, explicitly recommended for men who fear they cannot deal equitably with multiple free women (4:3). Intimacy is strictly regulated, legally restricted to spouses or one's own slaves (23:6, 4:24).

How must they be treated in daily life?

The commands governing daily life place the treatment of slaves on the same moral plane as devotion to immediate family. The instruction to worship God and avoid arrogance is immediately followed by a sweeping mandate to be good to parents, relatives, orphans, neighbors, and one's slaves (4:36). While acknowledging the physical reality of war—stating that a prophet should not take captives before conquering the battlefield (8:67)—the legal structure demands basic protection. It establishes a baseline of parity in physical safety, ensuring that fair retribution applies in cases of murder, a slave for a slave (2:178).

The ultimate trajectory of this structure pushes past basic legal rights toward material integration. The text pointedly critiques those who receive abundant provision from God yet refuse to pass that wealth on to the slaves they possess so that they may become their equals (16:71).

2:177 Al-Baqarah

Goodness does not consist in turning your face towards East or West. The truly good are those who believe in God and the Last Day, in the angels, the Scripture, and the prophets; who give away some of their wealth, however much they cherish it, to their relatives, to orphans, the needy, travellers and beggars, and to liberate those in bondage; those who keep up the prayer and pay the prescribed alms; who keep pledges whenever they make them; who are steadfast in misfortune, adversity, and times of danger. These are the ones who are true, and it is they who are aware of God.

2:178 Al-Baqarah

You who believe, fair retribution is prescribed for you in cases of murder: the free man for the free man, the slave for the slave, the female for the female. But if the culprit is pardoned by his aggrieved brother, this shall be adhered to fairly, and the culprit shall pay what is due in a good way. This is an alleviation from your Lord and an act of mercy. If anyone then exceeds these limits, grievous suffering awaits him.

4:3 An-Nisa

If you fear that you will not deal fairly with orphan girls, you may marry whichever [other] women seem good to you, two, three, or four. If you fear that you cannot be equitable [to them], then marry only one, or your slave(s): that is more likely to make you avoid bias.

4:24 An-Nisa

women already married, other than your slaves.God has ordained all this for you. Other women are lawful to you, so long as you seek them in marriage, with gifts from your property, looking for wedlock rather than fornication. If you wish to enjoy women through marriage, give them their bride-gift- this is obligatory- though if you should choose mutually, after fulfilling this obligation, to do otherwise [with the bride-gift], you will not be blamed: God is all knowing and all wise.

4:25 An-Nisa

If any of you does not have the means to marry a believing free woman, then marry a believing slave- God knows best [the depth of] your faith: you are [all] part of the same family- so marry them with their people’s consent and their proper bride-gifts. [Make them] married women, not adulteresses or lovers. If they commit adultery when they are married, their punishment will be half that of free women. This is for those of you who fear that you will sin; it is better for you to practise selfrestraint. God is most forgiving and merciful,

4:36 An-Nisa

Worship God; join nothing with Him. Be good to your parents, to relatives, to orphans, to the needy, to neighbours near and far, to travellers in need, and to your slaves. God does not like arrogant, boastful people,

4:92 An-Nisa

Never should a believer kill another believer, except by mistake. If anyone kills a believer by mistake he must free one Muslim slave and pay compensation to the victim’s relatives, unless they charitably forgo it; if the victim belonged to a people at war with you but is a believer, then the compensation is only to free a believing slave; if he belonged to a people with whom you have a treaty, then compensation should be handed over to his relatives, and a believing slave set free. Anyone who lacks the means to do this must fast for two consecutive months by way of repentance to God: God is all knowing, all wise.

5:89 Al-Ma'idah

God does not take you [to task] for what is thoughtless in your oaths, only for your binding oaths: the atonement for breaking an oath is to feed ten poor people with food equivalent to what you would normally give your own families, or to clothe them, or to set free a slave- if a person cannot find the means, he should fast for three days. This is the atonement for breaking your oaths- keep your oaths. In this way God makes clear His revelations to you, so that you may be thankful.

8:67 Al-Anfal

It is not right for a prophet to take captives before he has conquered the battlefield. You [people] desire the transient goods of this world, but God desires the Hereafter [for you]- God is mighty and wise-

9:60 At-Tawbah

Alms are meant only for the poor, the needy, those who administer them, those whose hearts need winning over, to free slaves and help those in debt, for God’s cause, and for travellers in need. This is ordained by God; God is all knowing and wise.

16:71 An-Nahl

God has given some of you more provision than others. Those who have been given more are unwilling to pass their provision on to the slaves they possess so that they become their equals. How can they refuse to acknowledge God’s blessings?

23:6 Al-Mu'minun

except with their spouses or their slaves––with these they are not to blame,

24:31 An-Nur

And tell believing women that they should lower their glances, guard their private parts, and not display their charms beyond what [it is acceptable] to reveal; they should let their headscarves fall to cover their necklines and not reveal their charms except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their womenfolk, their slaves, such men as attend them who have no sexual desire, or children who are not yet aware of women’s nakedness; they should not stamp their feet so as to draw attention to any hidden charms. Believers, all of you, turn to God so that you may prosper.

24:33 An-Nur

Those who are unable to marry should keep chaste until God gives them enough out of His bounty. If any of your slaves wish to pay for their freedom, make a contract with them accordingly, if you know they have good in them, and give them some of the wealth God has given you. Do not force your slave-girls into prostitution, when they themselves wish to remain honourable, in your quest for the short-term gains of this world, although, if they are forced, God will be forgiving and merciful to them.

24:58 An-Nur

Believers, your slaves and any who have not yet reached puberty should ask your permission to come in at three times of day: before the dawn prayer; when you lay your garments aside in the midday heat; and after the evening prayer. These are your three times for privacy; at other times, there is no blame on you or them if you move around each other freely. In this way God makes messages clear: God is all knowing, all wise.

30:28 Ar-Rum

He gives you this example, drawn from your own lives: do you make your slaves full partners with an equal share in what We have given you? Do you fear them as you fear each other? This is how We make Our messages clear to those who use their reason.

33:50 Al-Ahzab

Prophet, We have made lawful for you the wives whose bride gift you have paid, and any slaves God has assigned to you through war, and the daughters of your uncles and aunts on your father’s and mother’s sides, who migrated with you. Also any believing woman who has offered herself to the Prophet and whom the Prophet wishes to wed- this is only for you [Prophet] and not the rest of the believers: We know exactly what We have made obligatory for them concerning their wives and slave-girls- so you should not be blamed: God is most forgiving, most merciful.

33:52 Al-Ahzab

You [Prophet] are not permitted to take any further wives, nor to exchange the wives you have for others, even if these attract you with their beauty. But this does not apply to your slave-girls: God is watchful over all.

33:55 Al-Ahzab

The Prophet’s wives are not to blame [if they are seen by] their fathers, their sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, or their slaves. [Wives of the Prophet], be mindful of God. God observes everything.

47:4 Muhammad

He will not let the deeds of those who are killed for His cause come to nothing;

58:3 Al-Mujadila

Those of you who say such a thing to their wives, then go back on what they have said, must free a slave before the couple may touch one another again––this is what you are commanded to do, and God is fully aware of what you do––

70:30 Al-Ma'arij

from all but their spouses or their slave-girls––there is no blame attached to [relations with] these,

90:13 Al-Balad

It is to free a slave,
