When the Israelites demanded a king to lead them in battle, their prophet appointed a man named Talut (Saul), setting off an immediate internal dispute. The elites believed they held a greater right to rule, objecting that Talut possessed no substantial wealth (2:247). This confrontation establishes a divine standard for leadership that subverts human expectations. Instead of lineage or financial influence, the prophet explains that God selected Talut on the basis of two specific qualities: exceptional knowledge and impressive physical stature. Kingship and authority, the text establishes, belong strictly to God to distribute to whomever He pleases.
What was the sign of his authority?
Following this dispute, the prophet provided a tangible miracle to legitimize the appointment. The definitive proof of Talut’s authority would be the return of the Ark of the Covenant (2:248). Rather than being drawn by beasts of burden or recovered in combat, the text specifies that the Ark would be carried to them directly by angels. Inside this sacred chest rested a distinct divine gift—tranquility from their Lord—alongside preserved relics left behind by the followers of Moses and Aaron. This physical manifestation of God's endorsement served as a strict boundary line, demanding the believers submit to their newly appointed commander.
How did Talut test his army?
Once his authority was cemented, Talut marched his forces out, immediately subjecting them to a harsh trial of discipline. Before facing the enemy, he warned his soldiers that God would test them with a river. The instructions were precise: anyone who drank deeply from the water would be dismissed from the ranks, while those who refrained—or limited themselves to scooping a single handful of water—would remain with him (2:249).
The vast majority failed the test, drinking heavily and excusing themselves from the coming battle. Talut crossed the river with only the faithful few. Upon seeing the massive army of Goliath awaiting them, even some of the remaining believers despaired, declaring they had no strength left to fight. But the deeply steadfast among them, certain that they were going to meet their Lord, reminded the wavering ranks of a recurring historical reality. They declared that small forces have frequently routed massive armies with God's permission, because God remains with the steadfast (2:249).
Who defeated Goliath?
As Talut’s small band stepped forward to meet Goliath and his hardened warriors, they offered a unified prayer. They asked God to pour patience upon them, plant their feet firmly on the battlefield, and grant them help against the disbelievers (2:250).
In the ensuing clash, the giant Goliath was not slain by Talut himself, but by David (2:251). As Ibn Ashur notes (Al-Tahrir wa al-Tanwir, 7/339), David struck the champion between the eyes with a sling and severed his head, prompting Saul to reward the young hero by marrying his daughter Michal to him, though the king’s disposition toward David would later sour. Following Goliath's death, God elevated David, granting him sovereignty and wisdom, and teaching him what He pleased.
This transition of power and the preceding victory are not framed merely as historical triumphs, but as a demonstration of the mechanics governing human societies. The conflict underscores a divine method of preventing unchecked tyranny. If God did not drive some back by means of others the earth would be completely corrupt, but God is bountiful to all.

وَقَالَ لَهُمْ نَبِيُّهُمْ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَدْ بَعَثَ لَكُمْ طَالُوتَ مَلِكًا ۚ قَالُوٓا۟ أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لَهُ ٱلْمُلْكُ عَلَيْنَا وَنَحْنُ أَحَقُّ بِٱلْمُلْكِ مِنْهُ وَلَمْ يُؤْتَ سَعَةً مِّنَ ٱلْمَالِ ۚ قَالَ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱصْطَفَىٰهُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَزَادَهُۥ بَسْطَةً فِى ٱلْعِلْمِ وَٱلْجِسْمِ ۖ وَٱللَّهُ يُؤْتِى مُلْكَهُۥ مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ وَٰسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ
Their prophet said to them, ‘God has now appointed Talut to be your king,’ but they said, ‘How can he be king over us when we have a greater right to rule than he? He does not even have great wealth.’ He said, ‘God has chosen him over you, and has given him great knowledge and stature. God grants His authority to whoever He pleases: God is magnanimous, all knowing.’
وَقَالَ لَهُمْ نَبِيُّهُمْ إِنَّ ءَايَةَ مُلْكِهِۦٓ أَن يَأْتِيَكُمُ ٱلتَّابُوتُ فِيهِ سَكِينَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَبَقِيَّةٌ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ ءَالُ مُوسَىٰ وَءَالُ هَـٰرُونَ تَحْمِلُهُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ ۚ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
Their prophet said to them, ‘The sign of his authority will be that the Ark [of the Covenant] will come to you. In it there will be [the gift of] tranquillity from your Lord and relics of the followers of Moses and Aaron, carried by the angels. There is a sign in this for you if you believe.’
فَلَمَّا فَصَلَ طَالُوتُ بِٱلْجُنُودِ قَالَ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مُبْتَلِيكُم بِنَهَرٍ فَمَن شَرِبَ مِنْهُ فَلَيْسَ مِنِّى وَمَن لَّمْ يَطْعَمْهُ فَإِنَّهُۥ مِنِّىٓ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱغْتَرَفَ غُرْفَةًۢ بِيَدِهِۦ ۚ فَشَرِبُوا۟ مِنْهُ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّنْهُمْ ۚ فَلَمَّا جَاوَزَهُۥ هُوَ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ قَالُوا۟ لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا ٱلْيَوْمَ بِجَالُوتَ وَجُنُودِهِۦ ۚ قَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ يَظُنُّونَ أَنَّهُم مُّلَـٰقُوا۟ ٱللَّهِ كَم مِّن فِئَةٍ قَلِيلَةٍ غَلَبَتْ فِئَةً كَثِيرَةًۢ بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ
When Talut set out with his forces, he said to them, ‘God will test you with a river. Anyone who drinks from it will not belong with me, but anyone who refrains from tasting it will belong with me; if he scoops up just one handful [he will be excused].’ But they all drank [deep] from it, except for a few. When he crossed it with those who had kept faith, they said, ‘We have no strength today against Goliath and his warriors.’ But those who knew that they were going to meet their Lord said, ‘How often a small force has defeated a large army with God’s permission! God is with those who are steadfast.’
وَلَمَّا بَرَزُوا۟ لِجَالُوتَ وَجُنُودِهِۦ قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَآ أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًا وَثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَنَا وَٱنصُرْنَا عَلَى ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
And when they met Goliath and his warriors, they said, ‘Our Lord, pour patience on us, make us stand firm, and help us against the disbelievers,’
فَهَزَمُوهُم بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ وَقَتَلَ دَاوُۥدُ جَالُوتَ وَءَاتَىٰهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُلْكَ وَٱلْحِكْمَةَ وَعَلَّمَهُۥ مِمَّا يَشَآءُ ۗ وَلَوْلَا دَفْعُ ٱللَّهِ ٱلنَّاسَ بَعْضَهُم بِبَعْضٍ لَّفَسَدَتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ ذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
and so with God’s permission they defeated them. David killed Goliath, and God gave him sovereignty and wisdom and taught him what He pleased. If God did not drive some back by means of others the earth would be completely corrupt, but God is bountiful to all.
