Slaughter

الذبح

8 verses

The Quran frames the act of slaughter as a strict boundary between lawful provision and idolatry, while also recording it as an instrument of ancient political terror. Livestock are granted by God both as beasts of burden and as food, with a direct command to consume what He provides rather than following the footsteps of Satan (6:142). Taking an animal’s life is governed by precise conditions that separate the sustenance of believers from pagan practices.

What makes meat lawful to eat? The dietary laws specify that believers are forbidden to eat carrion, blood, pig's meat, or any animal over which a name other than God's has been invoked (5:3). The text details scenarios where an animal suffers physical trauma—being strangled, struck by a violent blow, suffering a fall, being gored, or savaged by a beast of prey. In these cases, the meat remains unlawful unless a person reaches the animal in time to slaughter it in the correct manner.

Any sacrifice performed on idolatrous altars is strictly prohibited, alongside the drawing of marked arrows to allot shares of meat (5:3). Classical scholars underscore that this prohibition extends to any location of veneration; as Abu Bakr al-Jaza'iri notes (Aysar al-Tafasir, 1/592), slaughtering over graves, domes, and memorials constitutes polytheism. The prescribed method ensures the act remains entirely dedicated to God.

The systemic violence of Pharaoh Beyond dietary law, the term describes the organized violence of Pharaoh's regime against the Israelites. Pharaoh asserted dominance by dividing the population into groups and systematically oppressing one faction by slaughtering their sons while sparing their women (28:4). The Quran identifies this policy as spreading corruption in the land.

Moses later reminded his people of this era, framing their deliverance from Pharaoh's people as a massive relief from terrible suffering, but also emphasizing that enduring the slaughter of their infants was a severe test from their Lord (14:6, 2:49). The tactic persisted among opponents of the truth; when Moses brought his message, his adversaries advised killing the sons of those who believed with him, an effort the text dismisses as scheming that can only go wrong (40:25).

Obedience and divine tests The concept of slaughter also marks extreme tests of obedience among the prophets. Classical commentators examine this through the supreme trial of Abraham being commanded to sacrifice his son. Highlighting the youth's resilience, al-Zamakhshari (Tafsir al-Kashshaf, 4/57) points to Ishmael's exceptional patience regarding the slaughter. Presenting a differing view on the son's identity, al-Wahidi (Al-Tafsir al-Basit, 19/92) cites Muqatil, stating that God rewarded Abraham's pure obedience to the command by pardoning Isaac from the slaughter.

The language appears again in the administration of Solomon's kingdom. Noticing the absence of the hoopoe bird from his ranks, Solomon threatens to punish the creature severely or slaughter it, unless it can produce a convincing excuse for its absence (27:21).

While the rules governing physical slaughter draw a firm line against idolatry and cruelty, the text embeds a final allowance for human survival. If a person is forced by severe hunger to eat forbidden food, acting with no intention of doing wrong, God is most forgiving and merciful (5:3).

God fulfilled His promise to you: you were routing them, with His permission, but then you faltered, disputed the order, and disobeyed, once He had brought you within sight of your goal- some of you desire the gains of this world and others desire the world to come- and then He prevented you from [defeating] them as a punishment. He has now forgiven you: God is most gracious to the believers.

You are also forbidden to allot shares [of meat] by drawing marked arrows -a heinous practice- today the disbelievers have lost all hope that you will give up your religion. Do not fear them: fear Me.
