Rage

12 verses

Rage (ghayz) appears in the text as a suffocating, internal fury that darkens faces and consumes its bearer. This specific intensity of anger functions primarily as a hostile reaction to the truth, taking physical tolls on those who harbor it while ultimately failing to achieve their ends. It operates as a destructive force that God leaves to consume the hostile, pacifies in the believers, and explicitly mirrors in the terrifying architecture of the afterlife.

What Happens to the Rage of Enemies?

The text illustrates how this visceral emotion overtakes individuals who reject divine instruction. It manifests socially, such as the pre-Islamic father whose face darkens, filled with gloom and internal rage when given news of the birth of a baby girl (16:58). In seats of power, it becomes tyrannical frustration; Pharaoh dismisses the Israelites as a small, insignificant band who "have enraged us" (26:55). The opponents of the believers are described as carrying the "fury of ignorance" in their hearts (48:26), an anger so intense it drives hypocrites to bite their fingertips in seclusion (3:119). The text dismisses this hostility with a sharp command: "Die of rage!"

Yet, this fury is consistently portrayed as impotent. When adversaries are frustrated by God's support for His Messenger in this world and the next, they are offered a striking image of their own helplessness: they are challenged to stretch a rope up to the sky, climb all the way up, and see whether this elaborate strategy removes the cause of their anger (22:15). In military encounters, their fury yields no strategic advantage. God simply turns back the disbelievers along with their rage, granting them no benefit and sparing the believers from the fight (33:25). Meanwhile, the steady, organic growth of the believers—compared to a seed that puts forth a strong, thick shoot—acts as a direct mechanism by which God infuriates the disbelievers (48:29).

How Does God Pacify the Heart?

While enemies stew in the fury of ignorance, God answers this hostility by sending His tranquillity down upon His Messenger and the believers (48:26). The clearing of a burdened heart is presented as a deliberate divine intervention. Following periods of conflict and injury, God acts to "remove the rage from their hearts," explicitly connecting this emotional relief to the fact that He turns to whomever He wills in His mercy (9:15).

This extraction of fury ensures the believers' actions remain grounded in faith rather than retaliatory wrath. God takes the physical tolls of this struggle and reframes them entirely: if believers suffer thirst, weariness, or hunger, or take any step that angers the disbelievers, it is not a cause for their own rage, but is instead recorded directly in their favor as a good deed (9:120).

Does Hell Feel Rage?

The most terrifying application of ghayz shifts from human emotion to the physical personification of Hell itself. When the Fire sees the wicked from a distance, they will hear it actively "raging and roaring" (25:12). The text describes Hell as an entity so intensely furious at the denial of God that it is "almost bursting with rage" (67:8). As Ibn Kamal Basha notes on this phrasing (Tafsir Ibn Kamal Basha, 9/17), the imagery indicates a violent tearing apart from the sheer pressure of this fury. The anger that the disbelievers harbored against the truth is ultimately dwarfed by the wrath of their destination, where its keepers will ask every group that is thrown in, ‘Did no one come to warn you?’ (67:8).

3:119 Ali 'Imran

This is how it is: here you are, you love them, but they do not love you; you believe in all the Scriptures and when they meet you, they say, ‘We believe,’ but when they are alone, they bite their fingertips in rage at you. [Prophet], say, ‘Die of rage [if you wish]!’ God knows exactly what is in everyone’s hearts.

3:134 Ali 'Imran

who give, both in prosperity and adversity, who restrain their anger and pardon people- God loves those who do good-

9:15 At-Tawbah

and remove the rage from their hearts. God turns to whoever He will in His mercy; God is all knowing and wise.

9:120 At-Tawbah

The people of Medina and their neighbouring desert Arabs should not have held back from following God’s Messenger, nor should they have cared about themselves more than him: if ever they suffer any thirst, weariness, or hunger in God’s cause, take any step that angers the disbelievers, or cause any harm to an enemy, a good deed is recorded in their favour on account of it- God never wastes the reward of those who do good-

16:58 An-Nahl

When one of them is given news of the birth of a baby girl, his face darkens and he is filled with gloom.

22:15 Al-Hajj

Anyone who thinks that God will not support him in this world and the next should stretch a rope up to the sky, climb all the way up it, and see whether this strategy removes the cause of his anger.

25:12 Al-Furqan

When it sees them from a distance, they will hear it raging and roaring,

26:55 Ash-Shu'ara

they have enraged us-

33:25 Al-Ahzab

God sent back the disbelievers along with their rage- they gained no benefit–– and spared the believers from fighting. He is strong and mighty.

48:26 Al-Fath

While the disbelievers had fury in their hearts- the fury of ignorance- God sent His tranquillity down on to His Messenger and the believers and made binding on them [their] promise to obey God, for that was more appropriate and fitting for them. God has full knowledge of all things.

48:29 Al-Fath

Muhammad is the Messenger of God. Those who follow him are harsh towards the disbelievers and compassionate towards each other. You see them kneeling and prostrating, seeking God’s bounty and His good pleasure: on their faces they bear the marks of their prostrations. This is how they are pictured in the Torah and the Gospel: like a seed that puts forth its shoot, becomes strong, grows thick, and rises on its stem to the delight of its sowers. So God infuriates the disbelievers through them; God promises forgiveness and a great reward to those who believe and do righteous deeds.

67:8 Al-Mulk

almost bursting with rage. Its keepers will ask every group that is thrown in, ‘Did no one come to warn you?’
