On the day God created the heavens and the earth, He ordained that there are twelve months in His decree (9:36). Time in the Quran is not an empty sequence; it is structured to govern human conduct, obligations, and limits. The text specifies exactly how these cycles function, tying the passage of a month to strict waiting periods for mourners, windows of safety for adversaries, and the precise times designated for major acts of worship.

Which months are sacred, and what do they require?

Out of the twelve decreed months, the Quran designates four as sacred (9:36). During these times, believers are explicitly commanded not to wrong their souls. The text prohibits violating the sanctity of the Sacred Month, the Sacred House, or the offerings and their garlands brought there (5:2). Fighting during a prohibited month is declared a great offense (2:217). However, the Quran maintains strict realism in conflict: while fighting is forbidden, barring others from God's path, disbelieving in Him, and expelling people from the Sacred Mosque are deemed even worse offenses. If adversaries attack, the rule of fair retribution applies, establishing "a sacred month for a sacred month" (2:194). As Ibn Qutaybah notes (Gharib al-Quran, 77), this ruling meant that when believers were barred from entering the Sacred House one year, they were granted the right to enter during that same sacred month the following year.

How do months organize acts of worship?

Specific obligations are anchored to particular months. The Quran identifies the month of Ramadan as the exact time it was sent down as guidance for mankind, providing clear messages that distinguish right from wrong (2:185). Because of this revelation, any believer present during Ramadan is instructed to fast. The directive includes built-in ease: those who are ill or traveling make up the missed days later, as the text emphasizes that God wants ease, not hardship. Similarly, the pilgrimage to Mecca is restricted to "the prescribed months" (2:197). During this season, those undertaking the Hajj must refrain from indecent speech, misbehavior, and quarreling.

When do months serve as legal waiting periods?

Beyond yearly rituals, the Quran utilizes the duration of a month to establish legal waiting periods and expiations. When a man swears an oath not to approach his wife, a strict waiting period of four months is enforced (2:226). If a husband dies, his widow is commanded to wait for four months and ten nights before she may remarry, after which there is no blame for what she reasonably chooses to do with her life (2:234). The measure of a month also governs penance. If a believer accidentally kills another believer and lacks the means to free a slave and pay compensation, they must fast for two consecutive months as an act of repentance to God (4:92). On a societal level, when dissolving treaties, the text grants idolaters a grace period of exactly four months to move freely about the land before facing military consequences (9:2, 9:5).

These designated cycles structure a believer's life around accountability. Whether tracking the four months and ten nights of a widow's grief, observing the sacred times of non-violence, or fasting through the days of Ramadan, the measure of the month serves as a constant boundary. By adhering to these limits, believers complete their prescribed periods and glorify God for having guided them, so that they may be thankful (2:185).

2:185 Al-Baqarah

It was in the month of Ramadan that the Quran was revealed as guidance for mankind, clear messages giving guidance and distinguishing between right and wrong. So any one of you who is present that month should fast, and anyone who is ill or on a journey should make up for the lost days by fasting on other days later. God wants ease for you, not hardship. He wants you to complete the prescribed period and to glorify Him for having guided you, so that you may be thankful.

2:194 Al-Baqarah

A sacred month for a sacred month: violation of sanctity [calls for] fair retribution. So if anyone commits aggression against you, attack him as he attacked you, but be mindful of God, and know that He is with those who are mindful of Him.

2:197 Al-Baqarah

The pilgrimage takes place during the prescribed months. There should be no indecent speech, misbehaviour, or quarrelling for anyone undertaking the pilgrimage- whatever good you do, God is well aware of it. Provide well for yourselves: the best provision is to be mindful of God- always be mindful of Me, you who have understanding-

2:217 Al-Baqarah

They ask you [Prophet] about fighting in the prohibited month. Say, ‘Fighting in that month is a great offence, but to bar others from God’s path, to disbelieve in Him, prevent access to the Sacred Mosque, and expel its people, are still greater offences in God’s eyes: persecution is worse than killing.’ They will not stop fighting you [believers] until they make you revoke your faith, if they can. If any of you revoke your faith and die as disbelievers, your deeds will come to nothing in this world and the Hereafter, and you will be inhabitants of the Fire, there to remain.

2:226 Al-Baqarah

For those who swear that they will not approach their wives, there shall be a waiting period of four months:if they go back, remember God will be most forgiving and merciful,

2:234 Al-Baqarah

If any of you die and leave widows, the widows should wait for four months and ten nights before remarrying. When they have completed this set time, you will not be blamed for anything they may reasonably choose to do with themselves. God is fully aware of what you do.

4:92 An-Nisa

Never should a believer kill another believer, except by mistake. If anyone kills a believer by mistake he must free one Muslim slave and pay compensation to the victim’s relatives, unless they charitably forgo it; if the victim belonged to a people at war with you but is a believer, then the compensation is only to free a believing slave; if he belonged to a people with whom you have a treaty, then compensation should be handed over to his relatives, and a believing slave set free. Anyone who lacks the means to do this must fast for two consecutive months by way of repentance to God: God is all knowing, all wise.

5:2 Al-Ma'idah

so, you who believe, do not violate the sanctity of God’s rites, the Sacred Month, the offerings, their garlands, nor those going to the Sacred House to seek the bounty and pleasure of their Lord––but when you have completed the rites of pilgrimage you may hunt. Do not let your hatred for the people who barred you from the Sacred Mosque induce you to break the law: help one another to do what is right and good; do not help one another towards sin and hostility. Be mindful of God, for His punishment is severe.

5:97 Al-Ma'idah

God has made the Ka'ba- the Sacred House- a means of support for people, and the Sacred Months, the animals for sacrifice and their garlands: all this. Know that God has knowledge of all that is in the heavens and earth and that He is fully aware of all things.

9:2 At-Tawbah

you [idolaters] may move freely about the land for four months, but you should bear in mind both that you will not escape God, and that God will disgrace those who defy [Him].

9:5 At-Tawbah

When the [four] forbidden months are over, wherever you encounter the idolaters, kill them, seize them, besiege them, wait for them at every lookout post; but if they turn [to God], maintain the prayer, and pay the prescribed alms, let them go on their way, for God is most forgiving and merciful.

9:36 At-Tawbah

God decrees that there are twelve months- ordained in God’s Book on the Day when He created the heavens and earth- four months of which are sacred: this is the correct calculation. Do not wrong your souls in these months- though you may fight the idolaters at any time, if they first fight you- remember that God is with those who are mindful of Him.

34:12 Saba

And [We subjected] the wind for Solomon. Its outward journey took a month, and its return journey likewise. We made a fountain of molten brass flow for him, and some of the jinn worked under his control with his Lord’s permission. If one of them deviated from Our command, We let him taste the suffering of the blazing flame.

46:15 Al-Ahqaf

We have commanded man to be good to his parents: his mother struggled to carry him and struggled to give birth to him- his bearing and weaning took a full thirty months. When he has grown to manhood and reached the age of forty he [may] say, ‘Lord, help me to be truly grateful for Your favours to me and to my parents; help me to do good work that pleases You; make my offspring good. I turn to You; I am one of those who devote themselves to You.’

58:4 Al-Mujadila

but anyone who does not have the means should fast continuously for two months before they touch each other, and anyone unable to do this should feed sixty needy people. This is so that you may [truly] have faith in God and His Messenger. These are the bounds set by God: grievous torment awaits those who ignore them.

65:4 At-Talaq

If you are in doubt, the period of waiting will be three months for those women who have ceased menstruating and for those who have not [yet] menstruated; the waiting period of those who are pregnant will be until they deliver their burden: God makes things easy for those who are mindful of Him.

97:3 Al-Qadr

The Night of Glory is better than a thousand months;
