Confident in the state of their crops, they swore that they would gather their fruits in the morning (68:17). In their absolute certainty, they made no allowance for the Will of God, acting as though the yield was entirely under their own command (68:18).

The owners designed their harvest around speed and exclusion. Rather than working openly or sharing the bounty, they called out to one another at daybreak, urging each other, "Go early to your field if you wish to gather all its fruits" (68:21-22). Their driving motivation was to ensure that none of the community's vulnerable members could approach them for a portion of the food. As they walked toward the property, they spoke in hushed tones to avoid drawing attention. They went off whispering, issuing strict instructions to one another: "Make sure no poor person enters the garden today!" (68:23-24). They departed in the early hours of the morning, fiercely bent on their purpose of hoarding the entire crop for themselves (68:25).
