Cow of the Children of Israel

8 verses

When Moses informed his people that God commanded them to sacrifice a cow, their immediate response was to accuse him of making fun of them (2:67). Rather than carrying out a direct, uncomplicated directive, they questioned the seriousness of their prophet. Moses answered by stating that God forbid he should be so ignorant. What began as a single instruction to slaughter an unspecified cow unfolded into a prolonged interrogation that nearly resulted in their failure to obey.

Why did the Israelites keep asking about the cow?

They initiated a series of demands, telling Moses to call upon his Lord to specify exactly what sort of animal was required. First, they asked about its age. Moses relayed that the cow must be neither too old nor too young, but somewhere in between, urging them to simply do as they were commanded (2:68). Instead of acting on this clarification, they pressed further, asking what color it should be. The divine answer established that it must be a bright yellow cow, one that is pleasing to the eye (2:69).

Still unsatisfied, they complained that all cows looked more or less alike to them. They demanded to know exactly what it was, adding that, with God’s will, they would be guided (2:70). The final set of criteria severely narrowed their options: the animal had to be completely perfect and unblemished, and it could not have been trained to till the earth or water the fields (2:71). Upon hearing these restrictive conditions, the Israelites conceded that Moses had finally "brought the truth." They slaughtered the cow, though the text emphasizes that they almost failed to do so.

What was the purpose of sacrificing the cow?

The reason behind this specific sacrifice was tied to an unsolved murder and the internal conflict it caused. Someone had been killed, and the Israelites had fallen into a dispute, blaming one another for the crime and concealing the reality of what had happened (2:72). God intended to bring what they had hidden to light.

To expose the truth, God issued a distinct command: "Strike the body with a part of the cow" (2:73). Through this action, the dead man was restored to life. The Quran links this physical miracle to a broader demonstration of divine ability, presenting it as a clear sign to the people so that they might understand how God brings the dead to life.

Even after witnessing a murdered man return to life and the concealed crime brought into the open, the spiritual state of the people deteriorated. Their hearts became as hard as rocks, or even harder (2:74). The text contrasts their unyielding nature with the physical earth itself, noting that there are rocks from which actual streams spring out, and some from which water flows when they split open. The comparison concludes with the image of stones that physically fall down in awe of God, who is not unaware of what they do.

2:67 Al-Baqarah

Remember when Moses said to his people, ‘God commands you to sacrifice a cow.’ They said, ‘Are you making fun of us?’ He answered, ‘God forbid that I should be so ignorant.’

2:68 Al-Baqarah

They said, ‘Call on your Lord for us, to show us what sort of cow it should be.’ He answered, ‘God says it should be neither too old nor too young, but in between, so do as you are commanded.’

2:69 Al-Baqarah

They said, ‘Call on your Lord for us, to show us what colour it should be.’ He answered, ‘God says it should be a bright yellow cow, pleasing to the eye.’

2:70 Al-Baqarah

They said, ‘Call on your Lord for us, to show us [exactly] what it is: all cows are more or less alike to us. With God’s will, we shall be guided.’

2:71 Al-Baqarah

He replied, ‘It is a perfect and unblemished cow, not trained to till the earth or water the fields.’ They said, ‘Now you have brought the truth,’ and so they slaughtered it, though they almost failed to do so.

2:72 Al-Baqarah

Then, when you [Israelites] killed someone and started to blame one another- although God was to bring what you had concealed to light-

2:73 Al-Baqarah

We said, ‘Strike the [body] with a part of [the cow]’: thus God brings the dead to life and shows His signs so that you may understand.

2:74 Al-Baqarah

Even after that, your hearts became as hard as rocks, or even harder, for there are rocks from which streams spring out, and some from which water comes when they split open, and others which fall down in awe of God: He is not unaware of what you do.
