admonished

16 verses

When Prophet Muhammad concealed a social ruling out of fear of public backlash, banned himself from a lawful comfort to please his household, or frowned at a blind man seeking guidance, the text permanently recorded his missteps. Rather than presenting a messenger who never misjudges a situation, the verses address him directly in moments of hesitation, anxiety, or misaligned priorities. This admonishment serves as an immediate corrective mechanism. It establishes that the authority of the message supersedes the personal inclinations, social reputation, and domestic peace of the man chosen to deliver it.

Why did God correct his social priorities?

The text explicitly chides the Prophet for how he allocated his attention and time during his mission. When a blind man approached him seeking benefit, the Prophet "frowned and turned away" (80:1-2). He chose instead to direct his focus and go "out of your way" for a man described as "self-satisfied" (80:5-6). The verses interrupt this interaction to question the Prophet's judgment of who merits his time, pointing out the unseen potential in the blind man who, for all the Prophet knew, "might have grown in spirit, or taken note of something useful to him" (80:3-4). The reprimand shifts the focus from external wealth and status to inner spiritual receptiveness.

How did fear of public opinion prompt divine intervention?

Divine instruction intervenes sharply when the Prophet allowed societal pressures or household dynamics to dictate his decisions. In one critical instance, he advised a man favored by both God and himself to "Keep your wife and be mindful of God" (33:37). The verse exposes the Prophet's internal state, stating he hid in his heart what God would later reveal simply because he was "afraid of people." God issues a firm, permanent correction: "it is more fitting that you fear God" (33:37). This incident involved Zayd, who eventually no longer wanted his wife. God gave her to the Prophet in marriage to dismantle the cultural taboo and ensure there would be "no fault in believers marrying the wives of their adopted sons" after a divorce (33:37). In a separate domestic situation, God questions why the Prophet would restrict his own lawful freedoms to manage his household, asking, "Prophet, why do you prohibit what God has made lawful to you in your desire to please your wives?" (66:1). Though the correction is direct, the verse immediately affirms that God remains "forgiving and merciful" (66:1).

How was he admonished regarding the revelation itself?

Beyond social and domestic choices, the Prophet received admonishment regarding his physical and mental handling of the revelation process. In his intense anxiety to retain the exact words being revealed to him, he would attempt to repeat them hastily as they came down. The revelation instructs him to stop this anxious repetition: "do not rush your tongue in an attempt to hasten the Revelation" (75:16). These verses relieve him of the immense burden of securing the text through human effort and memory alone. God takes total responsibility for its preservation, promising to "make sure of its safe collection and recitation" (75:17).

In every recorded instance of correction, the text strips away the Prophet's human anxieties—whether that is the fear of social scandal, the desire for domestic harmony, or the panic of failing to memorize the divine word. The heavy responsibility of the messenger is repeatedly narrowed down to faithful reliance on the One who authored the message. When the sheer weight of retaining the revelation causes him to rush his tongue, he is told to pause, wait for the recitation to finish, and simply repeat it, resting entirely on the divine guarantee that "We shall make it clear" (75:19).

33:37 Al-Ahzab

When you [Prophet] said to the man who had been favoured by God and by you, ‘Keep your wife and be mindful of God,’ you hid in your heart what God would later reveal: you were afraid of people, but it is more fitting that you fear God. When Zayd no longer wanted her, We gave her to you in marriage so that there might be no fault in believers marrying the wives of their adopted sons after they no longer wanted them. God’s command must be carried out:

66:1 At-Tahrim

Prophet, why do you prohibit what God has made lawful to you in your desire to please your wives? Yet God is forgiving and merciful:

75:16 Al-Qiyamah

[Prophet], do not rush your tongue in an attempt to hasten [your memorization of] the Revelation:

75:17 Al-Qiyamah

We shall make sure of its safe collection and recitation.

75:18 Al-Qiyamah

When We have recited it, repeat the recitation

75:19 Al-Qiyamah

and We shall make it clear.
