Guardian

29 verses

When believers faced the terrifying news of a massive enemy army gathering against them, their faith did not waver; instead, they declared, "God is enough for us: He is the best protector" (3:173). The concept of the Guardian (al-Wakil) in the Quran defines the absolute reliance of the created upon the Creator, while carefully restricting the boundaries of human authority over others.

Who defends the believer in crisis? In moments of severe threat or secret conspiracy, the Quran directs believers to transfer their anxieties entirely to God. When individuals falsely promise obedience and scheme by night to undermine instructions, the divine command is not to obsess over their plots, but to leave them alone and trust in God as a "sufficient protector" (4:81). This reliance is rooted in the reality that everything in the heavens and the earth already belongs to Him (4:132). The historical weight of this trust is immense; as noted in Al-Tafsir al-Ma'mun (3/390), Ibn Abbas stated that the phrase "God is enough for us, and He is the best protector" was spoken by Ibrahim when he was thrown into the fire, and by Muhammad when warned of the advancing armies. Knowing that only what God has decreed will come to pass, the believers take Him as their Master and place their trust squarely in His protection (9:51).

Are prophets responsible for the choices of their people? While God is the ultimate Guardian of the believers, He repeatedly reminds His messengers that they do not hold this title over their communities. Even when people reject the truth, the Prophet is instructed to declare, "I have not been put in charge of you" (6:66). The Quran strictly limits the scope of prophetic authority regarding human agency, telling Muhammad directly, "We have not made you their guardian, nor are you their keeper" (6:107). The messenger’s duty is transmission, not coercion or assuming responsibility for the spiritual failures of his audience.

When is human guardianship required? Earthly guardianship is highly pragmatic, invoked specifically to protect the vulnerable in financial and legal matters. In the Quran's detailed instructions for the recording of debts, it stipulates that if a debtor is "feeble-minded, weak, or unable to dictate" the terms to a scribe, an appointed human guardian must step in to "dictate justly" (2:282). This ensures that those who cannot physically or mentally advocate for themselves are not exploited in binding contracts.

Who will stand for the guilty at the Judgement? People often attempt to defend wrongdoers in this world, but the Quran strips away the illusion that such earthly alliances will hold any weight after death. It asks pointedly of those who argue on behalf of the treacherous: "who will argue on their behalf with God on the Day of Resurrection? Who will be their defender?" (4:109). When humanity is returned to their true Lord, the Judgement belongs exclusively to Him, the "swiftest of reckoners" (6:62).

God reassures the believers that He does not burden any soul with more than it can bear, establishing a relationship built on mercy rather than impossible demands (2:286). Acknowledging their own limitations, the faithful are taught a direct plea, asking their Lord not to take them to task for forgetfulness or mistakes, nor to lay upon them the heavy burdens carried by past generations. They strip away any reliance on their own power, directing their final appeal to the only one capable of answering: "Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so help us against the disbelievers" (2:286).

2:282 Al-Baqarah

You who believe, when you contract a debt for a stated term, put it down in writing: have a scribe write it down justly between you. No scribe should refuse to write: let him write as God has taught him, let the debtor dictate, and let him fear God, his Lord, and not diminish [the debt] at all. If the debtor is feeble-minded, weak, or unable to dictate, then let his guardian dictate justly. Call in two men as witnesses. If two men are not there, then call one man and two women out of those you approve as witnesses, so that if one of the two women should forget the other can remind her. Let the witnesses not refuse when they are summoned. Do not disdain to write the debt down, be it small or large, along with the time it falls due: this way is more equitable in God’s eyes, more reliable as testimony, and more likely to prevent doubts arising between you. But if the merchandise is there and you hand it over, there is no blame on you if you do not write it down. Have witnesses present whenever you trade with one another, and let no harm be done to either scribe or witness, for if you did cause them harm, it would be a crime on your part. Be mindful of God, and He will teach you: He has full knowledge of everything.

2:286 Al-Baqarah

God does not burden any soul with more than it can bear: each gains whatever good it has done, and suffers its bad- ‘ Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make mistakes. Lord, do not burden us as You burdened those before us. Lord, do not burden us with more than we have strength to bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so help us against the disbelievers.’

3:173 Ali 'Imran

Those whose faith only increased when people said, ‘Fear your enemy: they have amassed a great army against you,’ and who replied, ‘God is enough for us: He is the best protector,’

4:81 An-Nisa

They say, ‘We obey you,’ but as soon as they leave your presence, some of them scheme by night to do other than what you said. God records what they scheme, so leave them alone, and put your trust in God: He is sufficient protector.

4:109 An-Nisa

There you [believers] are, arguing on their behalf in this life, but who will argue on their behalf with God on the Day of Resurrection? Who will be their defender?

4:132 An-Nisa

Yes, indeed, everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to God, and He is enough for those who trust in Him.

4:171 An-Nisa

People of the Book, do not go to excess in your religion, and do not say anything about God except the truth: the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, was nothing more than a messenger of God, His word, directed to Mary, a spirit from Him. So believe in God and His messengers and do not speak of a ‘Trinity’- stop [this], that is better for you- God is only one God, He is far above having a son, everything in the heavens and earth belongs to Him and He is the best one to trust.

6:62 Al-An'am

Then they will all be returned to God, their true Lord. The Judgement truly belongs to Him, and He is the swiftest of reckoners.

6:66 Al-An'am

yet your people still reject it even though it is the truth. Say, ‘I have not been put in charge of you.

6:107 Al-An'am

If it had been God’s will, they would not have done so, but We have not made you their guardian, nor are you their keeper.

8:40 Al-Anfal

but if they pay no heed, be sure that God is your protector, the best protector and the best helper.

9:51 At-Tawbah

Say, ‘Only what God has decreed will happen to us. He is our Master: let the believers put their trust in God.’

10:30 Yunus

Every soul will realize, then and there, what it did in the past. They will be returned to God, their rightful Lord, and their invented [gods] will desert them.

10:108 Yunus

Say, ‘People, the Truth has come to you from your Lord. Whoever follows the right path follows it for his own good, and whoever strays does so to his own loss: I am not your guardian.’

11:12 Hud

So [Prophet] are you going to abandon some part of what is revealed to you, and let your heart be oppressed by it, because they say, ‘Why is no treasure sent down to him? Why has no angel come with him?’? You are only there to warn; it is God who is in charge of everything.

12:66 Yusuf

He said, ‘I will never send him with you, not unless you swear by God that you will bring him back to me if that is humanly possible.’ Then, when they had given him their pledge, he said, ‘Our words are entrusted to God.’

17:2 Al-Isra

We also gave Moses the Scripture, and made it a guide for the Children of Israel. ‘Entrust yourselves to no one but Me,

17:54 Al-Isra

Your Lord has the most knowledge about all of you: if He pleases He will have mercy on you, and if He pleases He will punish you. [Prophet], We did not send you to take charge of them.

17:65 Al-Isra

but you will have no authority over My [true] servants: Your Lord can take care of them well enough.’

17:68 Al-Isra

Can you be sure that God will not have you swallowed up into the earth when you are back on land, or that He will not send a sandstorm against you? Then you will find no one to protect you.

25:43 Al-Furqan

Think [Prophet] of the man who has taken his own passion as a god: are you to be his guardian?

28:28 Al-Qasas

Moses said, ‘Let that be the agreement between us- whichever of the two terms I fulfil, let there be no injustice to me- God is witness to what we say.’

33:3 Al-Ahzab

Put your trust in God: God is enough to trust.

33:48 Al-Ahzab

Do not give in to the disbelievers and the hypocrites: ignore the harm they cause you and put your trust in God. God is enough to trust.

39:41 Az-Zumar

We have sent the Scripture down to you [Prophet] with the Truth for people. Whoever follows the guidance does so for his own benefit, whoever strays away from it does so at his own peril: you are not in charge of them.

39:62 Az-Zumar

God is the Creator of all things; He has charge of everything;

42:6 Ash-Shuraa

As for those who take protectors other than Him, God is watching them; you are not responsible for them.

66:2 At-Tahrim

He has ordained a way for you [believers] to release you from [such] oaths––God is your helper: He is the All Knowing, the Wise.

73:9 Al-Muzzammil
