Thamud (ثمود) is the name of a people mentioned in the Quran who carved stone houses out of mountains in ancient Arabia. They were sent the prophet Salih.

لِّسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌ
well pleased with their labour,
وَثَمُودَ ٱلَّذِينَ جَابُوا۟ ٱلصَّخْرَ بِٱلْوَادِ
and the Thamud, who hewed into the rocks in the valley,
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَىٰهَآ
In their arrogant cruelty, the people of Thamud called [their messenger] a liar,
فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ نَاقَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَسُقْيَـٰهَا
The messenger of God said to them, ‘[Leave] God’s camel to drink,’
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنۢبِهِمْ فَسَوَّىٰهَا
but they called him a liar and hamstrung her. Their Lord destroyed them for their crime and levelled them.
