God initiates human life in a state of frailty, grants a period of physical power, and ultimately replaces it with weakness accompanied by grey hair (30:54). Across its 18 mentions of the concept, the text addresses this temporary physical vitality while establishing a broader framework where true power resides entirely with the Creator. It is a reality that, as Abu Zayd al-Tha'alibi notes (Tafsir al-Tha'alibi, 1/352), those who do wrong will only fully recognize when confronted by ultimate judgment.
How is human strength gained and lost? The Quran links material vigor directly to spiritual states. The prophet Hud tells his people that seeking forgiveness and returning to their Lord will not only bring abundant rain from the sky but will actually add extra strength to their existing power (11:52). Conversely, relying on anything other than the Creator diminishes it; people mistakenly take false gods hoping to extract strength from them, an effort that only distances them from actual support (19:81). Internal division is another critical drain on collective vitality. Believers are warned that quarreling with one another will cause them to lose heart and their spirit to desert them (8:46).
What role does physical power play? Physical capability is recognized as a practical tool that requires righteous application. Rulers and nations naturally measure themselves by military might, as seen when the Queen of Sheba’s advisors boast of their great force and power in war before awaiting her orders (27:33). This same raw power can paralyze an opponent; the Israelites refuse to enter a land specifically because they fear the fearsome, strong people living there (5:22). Yet raw capacity is meant to be paired with divine aid and communal effort. When Dhul-Qarnayn is asked to build a protective barrier, he acknowledges that the power his Lord has given him is better than any financial tribute, but he immediately asks the local people to lend him their physical strength so he can erect the fortification (18:95). Similarly, when Moses reaches full maturity and manhood—his peak physical condition—God pairs it with the essential gifts of wisdom and knowledge as a reward for his good deeds (28:14).
Who models true strength? The prophets are repeatedly characterized by their endurance and capability. David is explicitly remembered as "a man of strength who always turned to Us" (38:17), while Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are commended together as men of both "strength and vision" (38:45). Rather than a display of independence, this prophetic strength involves recognizing one's limitations and seeking proper reinforcement. Facing a hostile crowd, Lot laments his immediate lack of physical power to stop them, wishing aloud that he could rely on strong support (11:80). Moses applies this principle directly, praying for his brother Aaron to join his difficult mission with the specific plea to "augment my strength through him" (20:31).
Human capability is framed as a borrowed asset, meant to be fortified by repentance and augmented through righteous companionship. It is a divine loan bridging the frailty of infancy and the decline of old age. Rather than yielding to internal disputes that make the spirit desert a community, the believer is directed toward the actual source of endurance: "Be steadfast: God is with the steadfast" (8:46).

قَالُوا۟ يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ إِنَّ فِيهَا قَوْمًا جَبَّارِينَ وَإِنَّا لَن نَّدْخُلَهَا حَتَّىٰ يَخْرُجُوا۟ مِنْهَا فَإِن يَخْرُجُوا۟ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّا دَٰخِلُونَ
They said, ‘Moses, there is a fearsome people in this land. We will not go there until they leave. If they leave, then we will enter.’
وَأَطِيعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ وَلَا تَنَـٰزَعُوا۟ فَتَفْشَلُوا۟ وَتَذْهَبَ رِيحُكُمْ ۖ وَٱصْبِرُوٓا۟ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ
Obey God and His Messenger, and do not quarrel with one another, or you may lose heart and your spirit may desert you. Be steadfast: God is with the steadfast.
وَيَـٰقَوْمِ ٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ ثُمَّ تُوبُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِ يُرْسِلِ ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيْكُم مِّدْرَارًا وَيَزِدْكُمْ قُوَّةً إِلَىٰ قُوَّتِكُمْ وَلَا تَتَوَلَّوْا۟ مُجْرِمِينَ
My people, ask forgiveness from your Lord, and return to Him. He will send down for you rain in abundance from the sky, and give you extra strength. Do not turn away and be lost in your sins.’
قَالَ لَوْ أَنَّ لِى بِكُمْ قُوَّةً أَوْ ءَاوِىٓ إِلَىٰ رُكْنٍ شَدِيدٍ
He said, ‘If only I had the strength to stop you or could rely on strong support!’
قَالَ مَا مَكَّنِّى فِيهِ رَبِّى خَيْرٌ فَأَعِينُونِى بِقُوَّةٍ أَجْعَلْ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُمْ رَدْمًا
He answered, ‘The power my Lord has given me is better than any tribute, but if you lend me your strength, I will put up a fortification between you and them:
وَٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ ءَالِهَةً لِّيَكُونُوا۟ لَهُمْ عِزًّا
They have taken other gods beside God to give them strength,
ٱشْدُدْ بِهِۦٓ أَزْرِى
augment my strength through him.
قَالُوا۟ نَحْنُ أُو۟لُوا۟ قُوَّةٍ وَأُو۟لُوا۟ بَأْسٍ شَدِيدٍ وَٱلْأَمْرُ إِلَيْكِ فَٱنظُرِى مَاذَا تَأْمُرِينَ
They replied, ‘We possess great force and power in war, but you are in command, so consider what orders to give us.’
وَلَمَّا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُۥ وَٱسْتَوَىٰٓ ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ حُكْمًا وَعِلْمًا ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
When Moses reached full maturity and manhood, We gave him wisdom and knowledge: this is how We reward those who do good.
۞ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُم مِّن ضَعْفٍ ثُمَّ جَعَلَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ضَعْفٍ قُوَّةً ثُمَّ جَعَلَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ قُوَّةٍ ضَعْفًا وَشَيْبَةً ۚ يَخْلُقُ مَا يَشَآءُ ۖ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٱلْقَدِيرُ
It is God who creates you weak, then gives you strength, then weakness after strength, together with your grey hair: He creates what He will; He is the All Knowing, the All Powerful.
ٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَٱذْكُرْ عَبْدَنَا دَاوُۥدَ ذَا ٱلْأَيْدِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌ
Bear their words patiently [Prophet]. Remember Our servant David, a man of strength who always turned to Us:
وَٱذْكُرْ عِبَـٰدَنَآ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ أُو۟لِى ٱلْأَيْدِى وَٱلْأَبْصَـٰرِ
Remember Our servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, all men of strength and vision.
۞ أَوَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَيَنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَانُوا۟ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ كَانُوا۟ هُمْ أَشَدَّ مِنْهُمْ قُوَّةً وَءَاثَارًا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِذُنُوبِهِمْ وَمَا كَانَ لَهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن وَاقٍ
Have they not travelled through the land and seen how those who lived before them met their end? They were stronger than them and made a more impressive mark on the land, yet God destroyed them for their sins- they had no one to defend them against Him-
أَفَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَيَنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ كَانُوٓا۟ أَكْثَرَ مِنْهُمْ وَأَشَدَّ قُوَّةً وَءَاثَارًا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَمَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ
Have they not travelled through the land and seen how those who lived before them met their end? They were more numerous than them, stronger than them, and made a more impressive mark on the land, yet what they achieved was of no use to them at all.
فَأَمَّا عَادٌ فَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ ٱلْحَقِّ وَقَالُوا۟ مَنْ أَشَدُّ مِنَّا قُوَّةً ۖ أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَهُمْ هُوَ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُمْ قُوَّةً ۖ وَكَانُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا يَجْحَدُونَ
The people of 'Ad behaved arrogantly throughout the land without any right, saying, “Who could be stronger than us?” Did they not realize that God, who created them, was stronger than them?’ They continued to reject Our message,
وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بَنَيْنَـٰهَا بِأَيْي۟دٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ
We built the heavens with Our power and made them vast,
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلرَّزَّاقُ ذُو ٱلْقُوَّةِ ٱلْمَتِينُ
God is the Provider, the Lord of Power, the Ever Mighty.
عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلْقُوَىٰ
It was taught to him by [an angel] with mighty powers
