Every night, human consciousness undergoes a daily death where the soul departs the body, only to be returned by divine decree. The Quran defines sleep not merely as physical inactivity, but as a temporary withdrawal of the human soul. While mortals require this daily cessation of awareness to survive, the Creator exists in absolute contrast. God is the Ever Living, the Ever Watchful, whom neither the initial drowsiness of slumber nor deep sleep ever overtakes (2:255).

Where does the soul go during sleep?

The Quran explicitly links the state of sleeping to the finality of dying. God takes the souls of the living while they sleep, exactly as He takes the souls of the dead (39:42). During this period of suspended consciousness, God keeps hold of the souls of those whose death He has ordained, preventing them from waking. The other souls, whose time on earth has not yet concluded, are sent back into their bodies until their appointed time arrives.

This connection is deeply embedded in the language of the text. As Abu al-Mundhir al-Minyawi points out (Al-Asalib wa al-Itlaqat al-Arabiyyah, 104), the Arabic term for death is directly applied to sleep within the Quran. Every awakening is therefore a literal return to life, a cycle functioning as a daily sign for those who reflect on their mortality (39:42).

What is the physical purpose of sleeping?

On a physical level, the Quran states that God provides sleep specifically as a designated mechanism for human rest (78:9). This operates within a deliberate cosmic rhythm where the darkness of the night functions as a concealing garment over the earth, covering the resting body (25:47). The text distinguishes between the stages of losing this consciousness. As al-Tabari notes (Jami al-bayan, 5/391), the Arabic root for slumber refers specifically to the initial drowsiness and heaviness in the eye before actual sleep sets in.

Humans succumb to both this initial drowsiness and the deep sleep that follows. God established this pattern so that physical exhaustion is relieved in the dark, while the return of daylight mimics the final gathering. By making sleep a rest, He simultaneously made the waking day like a resurrection (25:47).

How did sleep protect the youths in the cave?

In the narrative of the Cave, sleep operates as an active shield rather than just a period of natural rest. While they remained in the cave, God "sealed their ears" with sleep for years, entirely shutting out the external world (18:11).

Despite remaining completely unconscious for years, their bodies were actively maintained. God turned them over to the right and the left, preventing physical decay while they lay dormant (18:18). Their posture and state were designed to terrify any observer. They appeared to be fully awake, and their dog lay at the entrance with its forelegs stretched out. The sight of these bodies, preserved in this unnatural state of suspension, was so unsettling that anyone seeing them would have turned and run away, filled with fear (18:18).

Because human biology demands this suspension of consciousness, mortals rely entirely on an external sustainer during their most vulnerable hours. The physical necessity of resting the body and releasing the soul highlights an absolute dependency, leaving the preservation of the world to the One who knows what is before creation and what is behind it. While creation sleeps, His throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and it does not weary Him to preserve them both (2:255).
