In the Quran, the act of asking carries strict boundaries when directed at prophets, yet absolute openness when directed at God. The text draws a sharp line between sincere inquiries meant to guide daily life and obstinate demands that challenge divine authority. While believers are warned against demanding physical miracles or debating theological mechanics, they are simultaneously invited to call upon God directly, bypassing any human intermediary.
How does God answer direct supplication?
When addressing human requests for divine help, the Quran establishes immediate proximity. If individuals ask about God, the response is swift: "I am near" (2:186). Unlike other legal or historical queries in the text, where the Prophet is instructed to "Say" the answer to the community, this verse removes the intermediary entirely. God declares He responds directly to anyone who calls upon Him, provided they believe and respond to His guidance in return (2:186). On a societal level, the Quran mirrors this expectation of responsiveness; true goodness requires believers to fulfill the physical requests of others, specifically directing wealth to the needy, travelers, and those who must beg (2:177).
What were the believers permitted to ask?
During the revelation, companions brought specific, practical concerns to the Prophet, which the Quran addresses systematically. They asked about crescent moons, and were told these serve as appointed markers for time and the pilgrimage (2:189). They asked what portions of their wealth they should give away, and the text advised them to give "what you can spare" to parents, orphans, and the destitute (2:215, 2:219). Other inquiries dealt with the gravity of specific actions, such as fighting in the prohibited months—deemed a great offense, though still lesser than religious persecution (2:217)—and the harms of intoxicants and gambling, where the sin is declared greater than any worldly benefit (2:219). As Wahba al-Zuhaili notes (Al-Tafsir al-Munir, 7/83), the Quran restricts questioning to matters that directly benefit people, address actual needs, or clarify ambiguities in the revelation.
When does a request become disobedience?
The Quran strictly condemns questioning that stems from ingratitude or demands for proof. It cites the historical example of the Israelites, who grew tired of their singular heavenly provision and demanded that Moses pray for the earth's herbs, cucumbers, garlic, lentils, and onions. This request resulted in humiliation, as they attempted to exchange what was superior for what was inferior (2:61). The text explicitly warns the Prophet's contemporaries against repeating this pattern by demanding signs similar to those demanded of Moses, equating such behavior to exchanging faith for disbelief (2:108). The Prophet himself is reminded that his role is only to bear good news and warning; he is not responsible for those who reject his message after asking for signs (2:119). Furthermore, investigating the precise mechanics of divine attributes crosses the line of permitted inquiry; as Ibn Juzayy notes regarding the nature of God's establishment over creation (Al-Tashil le-Ulum al-Tanzil, 2/349), the early generations refrained from such interrogations, with Imam Malik declaring that asking about its nature is an innovation.
Communities are not held answerable for the deeds or questions of those who passed away before them (2:134). The believers are instead left with a clear framework: to seek practical guidance when necessary, to avoid interrogating the mechanics of the unseen, and to recognize that the Creator listens directly to those who ask Him. "I respond to those who call Me, so let them respond to Me, and believe in Me, so that they may be guided" (2:186).

Remember when you said, ‘Moses, we cannot bear to eat only one kind of food, so pray to your Lord to bring out for us some of the earth’s produce, its herbs and cucumbers, its garlic, lentils, and onions.’ He said, ‘Would you exchange better for worse? Go to Egypt and there you will find what you have asked for.’ They were struck with humiliation and wretchedness, and they incurred the wrath of God because they persistently rejected His messages and killed prophets contrary to all that is right. All this was because they disobeyed and were lawbreakers.
Do you wish to demand of your messenger something similar to what was demanded of Moses? Whoever exchanges faith for disbelief has strayed far from the right path.
We have sent you [Prophet] with the truth, bearing good news and warning. You will not be responsible for the inhabitants of the Blaze.
That community passed away. What they earned belongs to them, and what you earn belongs to you: you will not be answerable for their deeds.

That community passed away: what they earned belongs to them, and what you earn belongs to you. You will not be answerable for their deeds.
Goodness does not consist in turning your face towards East or West. The truly good are those who believe in God and the Last Day, in the angels, the Scripture, and the prophets; who give away some of their wealth, however much they cherish it, to their relatives, to orphans, the needy, travellers and beggars, and to liberate those in bondage; those who keep up the prayer and pay the prescribed alms; who keep pledges whenever they make them; who are steadfast in misfortune, adversity, and times of danger. These are the ones who are true, and it is they who are aware of God.
[Prophet], if My servants ask you about Me, I am near. I respond to those who call Me, so let them respond to Me, and believe in Me, so that they may be guided.
They ask you [Prophet] about crescent moons. Say, ‘They show the times appointed for people, and for the pilgrimage.’ Goodness does not consist of entering houses by the back [door]; the truly good person is the one who is mindful of God. So enter your houses by their [main] doors and be mindful of God so that you may prosper.
[Prophet], ask the Children of Israel how many clear signs We brought them. If anyone alters God’s blessings after he has received them, God is stern in punishment.
They ask you [Prophet] what they should give. Say, ‘Whatever you give should be for parents, close relatives, orphans, the needy, and travellers. God is well aware of whatever good you do.
They ask you [Prophet] about fighting in the prohibited month. Say, ‘Fighting in that month is a great offence, but to bar others from God’s path, to disbelieve in Him, prevent access to the Sacred Mosque, and expel its people, are still greater offences in God’s eyes: persecution is worse than killing.’ They will not stop fighting you [believers] until they make you revoke your faith, if they can. If any of you revoke your faith and die as disbelievers, your deeds will come to nothing in this world and the Hereafter, and you will be inhabitants of the Fire, there to remain.
They ask you [Prophet] about intoxicants and gambling: say, ‘There is great sin in both, and some benefit for people: the sin is greater than the benefit.’ They ask you what they should give: say, ‘Give what you can spare.’ In this way, God makes His messages clear to you, so that you may reflect
on this world and the next. They ask you about [the property of] orphans: say, ‘It is good to set things right for them. If you combine their affairs with yours, remember they are your brothers and sisters: God knows those who spoil things and those who improve them. Had He so willed, He could have made you vulnerable too: He is almighty and wise.’
They ask you [Prophet] about menstruation. Say, ‘Menstruation is a painful condition, so keep away from women during it. Do not approach them until they are cleansed; when they are cleansed, you may approach them as God has ordained. God loves those who turn to Him, and He loves those who keep themselves clean.
[Give] to those needy who are wholly occupied in God’s way and cannot travel in the land [for trade]. The unknowing might think them rich because of their self-restraint, but you will recognize them by their characteristic of not begging persistently. God is well aware of any good you give.
People, be mindful of your Lord, who created you from a single soul, and from it created its mate, and from the pair of them spread countless men and women far and wide; be mindful of God, in whose name you make requests of one another. Beware of severing the ties of kinship: God is always watching over you.
Do not covet what God has given to some of you more than others- men have the portion they have earned; and women the portion they have earned- you should rather ask God for some of His bounty: He has full knowledge of everything.
The People of the Book demand that you [Prophet] make a book physically come down to them from heaven, but they demanded even more than that of Moses when they said, ‘Show us God face to face,’ and were struck by the thunderbolt for their presumption. Even after clear revelations had come down to them, they took the calf as an object of worship, yet We pardoned this, and gave Moses clear authority;
They ask you, Prophet, what is lawful for them. Say, ‘All good things are lawful for you.’ [This includes] what you have taught your birds and beasts of prey to catch, teaching them as God has taught you, so eat what they catch for you, but first pronounce God’s name over it. Be mindful of God: He is swift to take account.
They ask you [Prophet] about the Hour, ‘When will it happen?’ Say, ‘My Lord alone has knowledge of it: He alone will reveal when its time will come, a time that is momentous in both the heavens and earth. All too suddenly it will come upon you.’ They ask you about it as if you were eager [to find out]. Say, ‘God alone has knowledge of [when it will come], though most people do not realize it.’
They ask you [Prophet] about [distributing] the battle gains. Say, ‘That is a matter for God and His Messenger, so be mindful of God and make things right between you. Obey God and His Messenger if you are true believers:
They ask you [Prophet] about the Hour,
