Record

Every human being carries their destiny bound directly to their neck, functioning as an invisible ledger waiting to be brought forth on the Day of Resurrection (17:13). The Quran describes this divine account not as an abstract memory or a vague cosmic balance, but as a tangible, detailed document. Kept perfectly intact until the end of time, this text serves as the absolute measure of a life, ensuring that nothing is forgotten and no one is wronged.

What exactly is written in it?

The divine accounting spares no detail, bridging both private moments and public legacies. God states that He records what individuals send ahead during their lives as well as the lasting impacts they leave behind after death (36:12). Every single action, regardless of its magnitude or apparent insignificance, is captured and preserved (54:53).

Because the scope is absolute, the revelation of the text brings terror to those who assumed their minor infractions were forgotten. When the record of deeds is finally laid open, the guilty will be struck with dismay at the sheer exactness of the accounting. They will cry out, "Woe to us! What a record this is! It does not leave any deed, small or large, unaccounted for!" (18:49). All of existence is maintained in what the Quran calls a clear Record, ensuring total preservation (36:12).

How is the account presented?

The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the physical unfurling of these deeds. While skeptics in this world arrogantly demanded that a scripture be sent down from heaven and unrolled right before their very eyes to prove the revelation (74:52), the true and inescapable unrolling occurs at the end of time. On that day, the individual records of deeds will be brought out and spread wide open (81:10).

As Al-Wahidi notes (Al-Tafsir al-Basit, 15/ 221), early authorities like Mujahid understood this concept literally, defining the record as the physical page containing exactly what was written. Each person will find their own scroll spread wide open for them to examine personally (17:13). The physical receipt of the text immediately signals the reader's outcome, as whoever is given his record in his right hand will experience an easy reckoning (84:7-8).

How does it determine judgement?

The presentation of these records acts as the centerpiece of the final judgment. The earth will physically shine with the light of its Lord as the records of deeds are laid open (39:69). To ensure complete transparency and fair judgment, the prophets and witnesses will also be brought in, guaranteeing that no soul is wronged by the ruling passed upon them (39:69).

The texts themselves are rigorously categorized. The list detailing the deeds of the wicked is kept in a register called Sijjin, which the Quran describes explicitly as a clearly numbered list (83:7-9).

The exactness of the record eliminates any need for external prosecution; the text itself testifies against its author. Confronted with the unrolled pages of their own lives, people will find everything they ever did laid directly in front of them, confirming that their Lord will not be unjust to anyone (18:49).
