When the Quran records questions posed to the Prophet, it frequently shifts the focus from superficial details to actionable morality. Rather than merely supplying raw data, the text evaluates the motive behind the inquiry, distinguishing between those seeking practical guidance and those raising objections to evade responsibility.
What should we ask about daily conduct? Many questions in the text address the material realities of the early Muslim community. When asked about intoxicants and gambling, the Quran acknowledges "some benefit for people" but states unequivocally that "the sin is greater than the benefit" (2:219). Inquiries about charity receive highly specific beneficiaries: parents, close relatives, orphans, the needy, and travelers (2:215). When the community asks again what exactly they should give away, the instruction is simply to give "what you can spare" (2:219).
Often, the text answers the literal question while immediately appending a broader moral directive. For example, when people ask about crescent moons, the Quran confirms they "show the times appointed for people, and for the pilgrimage" (2:189). However, it instantly pivots to correct a behavioral superstition, clarifying that goodness is not entering houses by the back door, but being mindful of God and entering through the main doors (2:189). It redirects attention from trivial debates—such as whether to turn one's face East or West—toward substantive faith in God, angels, and the Last Day, alongside material support for the vulnerable and steadfastness in misfortune (2:177).
When does questioning become harmful? The Quran warns against inquiries designed to burden, mock, or defy. Believers are cautioned not to "demand of your messenger something similar to what was demanded of Moses," equating such behavior with exchanging faith for disbelief (2:108). The text cites the historical precedent of the Israelites, who could not bear one kind of food and demanded Moses ask God for the earth's "herbs and cucumbers, its garlic, lentils, and onions" (2:61). They were told they were exchanging better for worse and were struck with humiliation for persistently rejecting messages.
As Wahba al-Zuhayli notes (al-Tafsir al-Munir, 7/83), the Quranic framework prohibits questions that serve no productive purpose, permitting those concerning what benefits the questioner, what they need, or clarifications of revelation. Classical scholars similarly discouraged probing the mechanics of the unseen; as Ibn Juzayy records, when asked to explain the exact nature of certain divine attributes, Imam Malik stated that "the question about it is an innovation" (al-Tashil li-Ulum al-Tanzil, 2/349).
Who is accountable for the answers? Once a clear answer or sign is given, it carries severe responsibility. The Prophet is instructed to "ask the Children of Israel how many clear signs We brought them," carrying the warning that altering God's blessings after receiving them invites stern punishment (2:211).
At the same time, the Quran shuts down speculative questions about the fate of past nations, emphasizing personal accountability. It repeats the axiom: "That community passed away. What they earned belongs to them, and what you earn belongs to you: you will not be answerable for their deeds" (2:134, 2:141). Even the Prophet's responsibility ends at delivering the answers; he brings good news and warning, but "will not be responsible for the inhabitants of the Blaze" (2:119). Ultimately, the most profound questioning in the Quran is not an intellectual interrogation of the law, but a direct appeal to the Lawgiver. When addressing how to inquire about God Himself, the text drops third-person rulings to establish direct presence: "[Prophet], if My servants ask you about Me, I am near. I respond to those who call Me" (2:186).

Remember when you said, ‘Moses, we cannot bear to eat only one kind of food, so pray to your Lord to bring out for us some of the earth’s produce, its herbs and cucumbers, its garlic, lentils, and onions.’ He said, ‘Would you exchange better for worse? Go to Egypt and there you will find what you have asked for.’ They were struck with humiliation and wretchedness, and they incurred the wrath of God because they persistently rejected His messages and killed prophets contrary to all that is right. All this was because they disobeyed and were lawbreakers.
Do you wish to demand of your messenger something similar to what was demanded of Moses? Whoever exchanges faith for disbelief has strayed far from the right path.
We have sent you [Prophet] with the truth, bearing good news and warning. You will not be responsible for the inhabitants of the Blaze.
That community passed away. What they earned belongs to them, and what you earn belongs to you: you will not be answerable for their deeds.
That community passed away: what they earned belongs to them, and what you earn belongs to you. You will not be answerable for their deeds.
Goodness does not consist in turning your face towards East or West. The truly good are those who believe in God and the Last Day, in the angels, the Scripture, and the prophets; who give away some of their wealth, however much they cherish it, to their relatives, to orphans, the needy, travellers and beggars, and to liberate those in bondage; those who keep up the prayer and pay the prescribed alms; who keep pledges whenever they make them; who are steadfast in misfortune, adversity, and times of danger. These are the ones who are true, and it is they who are aware of God.
[Prophet], if My servants ask you about Me, I am near. I respond to those who call Me, so let them respond to Me, and believe in Me, so that they may be guided.
They ask you [Prophet] about crescent moons. Say, ‘They show the times appointed for people, and for the pilgrimage.’ Goodness does not consist of entering houses by the back [door]; the truly good person is the one who is mindful of God. So enter your houses by their [main] doors and be mindful of God so that you may prosper.
[Prophet], ask the Children of Israel how many clear signs We brought them. If anyone alters God’s blessings after he has received them, God is stern in punishment.
They ask you [Prophet] what they should give. Say, ‘Whatever you give should be for parents, close relatives, orphans, the needy, and travellers. God is well aware of whatever good you do.
They ask you [Prophet] about fighting in the prohibited month. Say, ‘Fighting in that month is a great offence, but to bar others from God’s path, to disbelieve in Him, prevent access to the Sacred Mosque, and expel its people, are still greater offences in God’s eyes: persecution is worse than killing.’ They will not stop fighting you [believers] until they make you revoke your faith, if they can. If any of you revoke your faith and die as disbelievers, your deeds will come to nothing in this world and the Hereafter, and you will be inhabitants of the Fire, there to remain.
They ask you [Prophet] about intoxicants and gambling: say, ‘There is great sin in both, and some benefit for people: the sin is greater than the benefit.’ They ask you what they should give: say, ‘Give what you can spare.’ In this way, God makes His messages clear to you, so that you may reflect
on this world and the next. They ask you about [the property of] orphans: say, ‘It is good to set things right for them. If you combine their affairs with yours, remember they are your brothers and sisters: God knows those who spoil things and those who improve them. Had He so willed, He could have made you vulnerable too: He is almighty and wise.’
They ask you [Prophet] about menstruation. Say, ‘Menstruation is a painful condition, so keep away from women during it. Do not approach them until they are cleansed; when they are cleansed, you may approach them as God has ordained. God loves those who turn to Him, and He loves those who keep themselves clean.
[Give] to those needy who are wholly occupied in God’s way and cannot travel in the land [for trade]. The unknowing might think them rich because of their self-restraint, but you will recognize them by their characteristic of not begging persistently. God is well aware of any good you give.
People, be mindful of your Lord, who created you from a single soul, and from it created its mate, and from the pair of them spread countless men and women far and wide; be mindful of God, in whose name you make requests of one another. Beware of severing the ties of kinship: God is always watching over you.
Do not covet what God has given to some of you more than others- men have the portion they have earned; and women the portion they have earned- you should rather ask God for some of His bounty: He has full knowledge of everything.
The People of the Book demand that you [Prophet] make a book physically come down to them from heaven, but they demanded even more than that of Moses when they said, ‘Show us God face to face,’ and were struck by the thunderbolt for their presumption. Even after clear revelations had come down to them, they took the calf as an object of worship, yet We pardoned this, and gave Moses clear authority;
They ask you, Prophet, what is lawful for them. Say, ‘All good things are lawful for you.’ [This includes] what you have taught your birds and beasts of prey to catch, teaching them as God has taught you, so eat what they catch for you, but first pronounce God’s name over it. Be mindful of God: He is swift to take account.
They ask you [Prophet] about the Hour, ‘When will it happen?’ Say, ‘My Lord alone has knowledge of it: He alone will reveal when its time will come, a time that is momentous in both the heavens and earth. All too suddenly it will come upon you.’ They ask you about it as if you were eager [to find out]. Say, ‘God alone has knowledge of [when it will come], though most people do not realize it.’
They ask you [Prophet] about [distributing] the battle gains. Say, ‘That is a matter for God and His Messenger, so be mindful of God and make things right between you. Obey God and His Messenger if you are true believers:
They ask you [Prophet] about the Hour,
