26 verses
God orchestrated the infant Moses’s return to his mother for a specific emotional purpose: “so that she could rejoice and not grieve” (20:40). Similarly, Mary is commanded to “eat, drink, be glad” and to abstain from speaking to anyone for the day (19:26). These moments of earthly relief ground the Quranic concept of joy in tangible human experience. Yet beyond these worldly comforts, the text directs believers toward a permanent reality called the Gardens of Delight (Jannat al-Na'im).
Who enters the Gardens of Bliss? The requirement for entry into this ultimate joy is consistently tied to a combination of inner faith and outward action. God states that if the People of the Book would believe and be mindful of Him, He would take away their sins and bring them directly into the Gardens of Delight (5:65). This admission is the direct consequence of a life lived with purpose; for those who believe and do righteous deeds, there will undoubtedly be Gardens of bliss (31:8). On the Day when God exercises absolute control and judges between humanity, those who maintained this standard will find their admission secured (22:56). The text underscores the importance of seeking this outcome, recording the sincere prayer: “make me one of those given the Garden of Bliss” (26:85).
What characterizes this promised joy? The delight of Paradise is both personal and relational. Believers are not isolated in their reward; they are welcomed with the divine command: “Enter Paradise, you and your spouses: you will be filled with joy” (43:70). Within these spaces, residents are provided with “familiar provisions” (37:41) as they are settled “in gardens of delight” (37:43). God gives them the good news of His mercy and pleasure, placing them in an environment where they will experience lasting bliss (9:21). Yet, despite these vivid descriptions, the exact magnitude of the reward remains deliberately obscured. The text emphasizes that “no soul knows what joy is kept hidden in store for them as a reward for what they have done” (32:17).
Are we accountable for worldly comforts? While ultimate bliss awaits in the hereafter, the Quran establishes strict accountability for the comforts experienced in this life. When verses were revealed warning that people would ultimately be questioned about their earthly delights (al-na'im), the Prophet's companions were confused. As al-Naysaburi notes (Ijaz al-bayan, 2/889), the companions were living through severe hardship and asked how they could possibly be questioned about "delight." Classical scholarship clarifies that this divine questioning applies to fundamental human well-being rather than luxury. The early scholar Sufyan al-Thawri explained that the "delight" humanity will be held accountable for refers specifically to baseline security and physical health (Mawsu'at al-tafsir al-mathur, 23/531).
Escaping the fire to enter this eternal abode of delight is recognized as the greatest possible triumph, marking the transition from worldly vulnerability to permanent safety (Aysar al-Tafasir, 4/409). The believer's final transition ends with the profound spiritual relief of arriving exactly where they were promised. Their Lord will guide them forward because of their faith, as streams flow at their feet in the Gardens of Bliss (10:9).

وَلَوْ أَنَّ أَهْلَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَٱتَّقَوْا۟ لَكَفَّرْنَا عَنْهُمْ سَيِّـَٔاتِهِمْ وَلَأَدْخَلْنَـٰهُمْ جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
If only the People of the Book would believe and be mindful of God, We would take away their sins and bring them into the Gardens of Delight.
يُبَشِّرُهُمْ رَبُّهُم بِرَحْمَةٍ مِّنْهُ وَرِضْوَٰنٍ وَجَنَّـٰتٍ لَّهُمْ فِيهَا نَعِيمٌ مُّقِيمٌ
and their Lord gives them the good news of His mercy and pleasure, Gardens where they will have lasting bliss
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ يَهْدِيهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِإِيمَـٰنِهِمْ ۖ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهِمُ ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ فِى جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
But as for those who believe and do good deeds, their Lord will guide them because of their faith. Streams will flow at their feet in the Gardens of Bliss.
فَكُلِى وَٱشْرَبِى وَقَرِّى عَيْنًا ۖ فَإِمَّا تَرَيِنَّ مِنَ ٱلْبَشَرِ أَحَدًا فَقُولِىٓ إِنِّى نَذَرْتُ لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ صَوْمًا فَلَنْ أُكَلِّمَ ٱلْيَوْمَ إِنسِيًّا
so eat, drink, be glad, and say to anyone you may see: “I have vowed to the Lord of Mercy to abstain from conversation, and I will not talk to anyone today.”’
إِذْ تَمْشِىٓ أُخْتُكَ فَتَقُولُ هَلْ أَدُلُّكُمْ عَلَىٰ مَن يَكْفُلُهُۥ ۖ فَرَجَعْنَـٰكَ إِلَىٰٓ أُمِّكَ كَىْ تَقَرَّ عَيْنُهَا وَلَا تَحْزَنَ ۚ وَقَتَلْتَ نَفْسًا فَنَجَّيْنَـٰكَ مِنَ ٱلْغَمِّ وَفَتَنَّـٰكَ فُتُونًا ۚ فَلَبِثْتَ سِنِينَ فِىٓ أَهْلِ مَدْيَنَ ثُمَّ جِئْتَ عَلَىٰ قَدَرٍ يَـٰمُوسَىٰ
Your sister went out, saying, “I will tell you someone who will nurse him,” then We returned you to your mother so that she could rejoice and not grieve. Later you killed a man, but We saved you from distress and tried you with other tests. You stayed among the people of Midian for years, then you came here as I ordained.
ٱلْمُلْكُ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلَّهِ يَحْكُمُ بَيْنَهُمْ ۚ فَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ فِى جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
On that Day control will belong to God: He will judge between them. Those who believe and do good deeds will be admitted to Gardens of Delight,
وَٱجْعَلْنِى مِن وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
make me one of those given the Garden of Bliss-
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ لَهُمْ جَنَّـٰتُ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
But for those who believe and do righteous deeds, there will be Gardens of bliss
فَلَا تَعْلَمُ نَفْسٌ مَّآ أُخْفِىَ لَهُم مِّن قُرَّةِ أَعْيُنٍ جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
No soul knows what joy is kept hidden in store for them as a reward for what they have done.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ لَهُمْ رِزْقٌ مَّعْلُومٌ
They will have familiar provisions––
فِى جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
in gardens of delight;
ٱدْخُلُوا۟ ٱلْجَنَّةَ أَنتُمْ وَأَزْوَٰجُكُمْ تُحْبَرُونَ
‘Enter Paradise, you and your spouses: you will be filled with joy.’
يُطَافُ عَلَيْهِم بِصِحَافٍ مِّن ذَهَبٍ وَأَكْوَابٍ ۖ وَفِيهَا مَا تَشْتَهِيهِ ٱلْأَنفُسُ وَتَلَذُّ ٱلْأَعْيُنُ ۖ وَأَنتُمْ فِيهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ
Dishes and goblets of gold will be passed around them with all that their souls desire and their eyes delight in. ‘There you will remain:
وَنَعْمَةٍ كَانُوا۟ فِيهَا فَـٰكِهِينَ
many a thing in which they had delighted:
إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ وَنَعِيمٍ
Those who were mindful of God are in Gardens and in bliss,
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ
For these will be the ones brought nearest to God
فِى جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
in Gardens of Bliss:
فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ
If that dying person is one of those who will be brought near to God,
فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍ
he will have rest, ease, and a Garden of Bliss;
إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
There will be Gardens of bliss for those who are mindful of God.
أَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٍ
Does every one of them expect to enter a Garden of bliss?
وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ ثَمَّ رَأَيْتَ نَعِيمًا وَمُلْكًا كَبِيرًا
and if you were to look around, you would see bliss and great wealth:
إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ لَفِى نَعِيمٍ
the good will live in bliss,
إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ لَفِى نَعِيمٍ
The truly good will live in bliss,
تَعْرِفُ فِى وُجُوهِهِمْ نَضْرَةَ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
You will recognize on their faces the radiance of bliss.
ثُمَّ لَتُسْـَٔلُنَّ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَنِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
On that Day, you will be asked about your pleasures.
