Harvest
17 verses
Humans drop seeds into the earth, but the Quran draws a strict boundary between human labor and divine cultivation. As Ibn Kamal Pasha notes (تفسير ابن كمال باشا, 2/ 257), the text affirms that people till the soil, but explicitly negates their role in actually growing the crop, reserving that power entirely for God. The emergence of grain, olives, palms, vines, and diverse vegetation is presented not as an automatic earthly cycle, but as a deliberate sign requiring reflection (16:11).
Who causes the fields to yield? The text points to the physical realities of agriculture to demonstrate precise divine control. Neighboring plots of land receive the exact same water, yet the resulting vineyards, cornfields, and palm clusters yield entirely different tastes (13:4). This variation in flavor and form—spanning trellised and untrellised gardens, pomegranates, and olives—is an intentional act of creation (6:141). Rain is specifically driven to barren land to produce the vegetation necessary to feed both humans and their cattle (32:27).
The visible abundance of these fields, such as palm trees heavily laden with fruit or vast cornfields set between grapevines (18:32), often creates a false sense of eternal security for those who own them (26:146, 26:148). Yet historical precedent contradicts this safety. Past nations cultivated the earth far more heavily and built greater structures, but they ultimately met their end when they ignored their messengers and wronged themselves (30:9).
How is the yield managed? A successful harvest carries immediate obligations regarding charity and preservation. When crops bear fruit, the owners are commanded to pay what is due on the exact day of the harvest, while strictly avoiding wastefulness, which God dislikes (6:141). Proper handling also requires foresight, as demonstrated by Joseph’s agricultural strategy. He advised sowing continuously for seven years and storing the reaped grain by leaving it protected in the ear, extracting only the small amount needed for daily food (12:47).
True provision is untethered from the immediate fertility of the land itself. When Abraham left his offspring in a completely uncultivated valley near the Sacred House to establish prayer, he relied on God to turn people’s hearts toward them and provide them with the produce they could not grow themselves, so they might be thankful (14:37).
What does the growing cycle reveal? The physical life of a plant mirrors the fleeting reality of human existence. Water falls from the sky, forms springs in the earth, and brings forth vegetation of vibrant, varied colors. Eventually, this same thriving crop withers, turns yellow before the eyes of the observer, and crumbles to dust at a divine command (39:21).
Because of this stark impermanence, the act of harvesting transforms into a measure of human intention and eternal consequence. If a person desires a harvest in the life to come, their yield is increased for them; if they desire a harvest only in this world, they are given a temporary share of it here, but in the Hereafter they will have no share at all (42:20).

It is He who produces both trellised and untrellised gardens, date palms, crops of diverse flavours, the olive, the pomegranate, alike yet different. So when they bear fruit, eat some of it, paying what is due on the day of harvest, but do not be wasteful: God does not like wasteful people.
then I can return to the people to inform them.’ Joseph said, ‘You will sow for seven consecutive years as usual. Store all that you reap, left in the ear, apart from the little you eat.
There are, in the land, neighbouring plots, gardens of vineyards, cornfields, palm trees in clusters or otherwise, all watered with the same water, yet We make some of them taste better than others: there truly are signs in this for people who reason.
Our Lord, I have established some of my offspring in an uncultivated valley, close to Your Sacred House, Lord, so that they may keep up the prayer. Make people’s hearts turn to them, and provide them with produce, so that they may be thankful.
With it He grows for you grain, olives, palms, vines, and all kinds of other crops. There truly is a sign in this for those who reflect.
Tell them the parable of two men: for one of them We made two gardens of grape vines, surrounded them with date palms, and put corn fields in between;
[Do you think] you will be left secure for ever in what you have here-
fields, palm trees laden with fruit-
Have they not travelled through the land and seen how their predecessors met their end? They were mightier than them: they cultivated the earth more and built more upon it. Their own mes-sengers also came to them with clear signs: God did not wrong them; they wronged themselves.
Do they not consider how We drive rain to the barren land, and with it produce vegetation from which their cattle and they themselves eat? Do they not see?
Have you not considered that God sends water down from the sky, guides it along to form springs in the earth, and then, with it, brings forth vegetation of various colours, which later withers, turns yellow before your eyes, and is crumbled to dust at His command? There is truly a reminder in this for those who have understanding.
If anyone desires a harvest in the life to come, We shall increase it for him; if anyone desires a harvest in this world, We shall give him a share of it, but in the Hereafter he will have no share.
many a cornfield and noble building,
Muhammad is the Messenger of God. Those who follow him are harsh towards the disbelievers and compassionate towards each other. You see them kneeling and prostrating, seeking God’s bounty and His good pleasure: on their faces they bear the marks of their prostrations. This is how they are pictured in the Torah and the Gospel: like a seed that puts forth its shoot, becomes strong, grows thick, and rises on its stem to the delight of its sowers. So God infuriates the disbelievers through them; God promises forgiveness and a great reward to those who believe and do righteous deeds.
Consider the seeds you sow in the ground-
is it you who make them grow or We?
Bear in mind that the present life is just a game, a diversion, an attraction, a cause of boasting among you, of rivalry in wealth and children. It is like plants that spring up after the rain: their growth at first delights the sowers, but then you see them wither away, turn yellow, and become stubble. There is terrible punishment in the next life as well as forgiveness and approval from God; the life of this world is only an illusory pleasure.
