Exultation

When warning signs are ignored, the gates to worldly abundance are sometimes thrown wide open, allowing people to revel in their gifts just before a sudden strike leaves them dumbfounded (6:44). The Quran frames this intense, boastful joy—exultation—not as a harmless emotional peak, but as a blinding agent that precedes spiritual collapse. It represents an arrogance that detaches human beings from reality, replacing gratitude with a dangerous, self-congratulatory high.

Why does the Quran condemn revelling?

The condemnation focuses on the arrogance embedded in the joy, rather than the feeling of human happiness itself. Exultation becomes destructive when it is rooted in untruth and a desire to run wild on earth (40:75), treating life as a playground devoid of accountability. This false pride inevitably manifests in claiming unearned merit. Those who exult in their own actions while actively seeking praise for things they have not actually done construct a reality based on deceit (3:188). It also breeds a terminal intellectual arrogance. When messengers arrived with clear signs, the deniers revelled in the knowledge they already possessed, mocking the revelation until they were engulfed by the very punishment they had ridiculed (40:83).

How does group exultation lead to division?

Group pride heavily fuels sectarian fractures, transforming religion from a shared pursuit of truth into a tribal identity. The text describes communities that have shattered their unity by dividing their faith into factions, with each party rejoicing in their own (30:32, 23:53). This communal exultation creates an insular echo chamber where absolute certainty in one’s own sect replaces humility. The joy of the faction becomes a barrier to self-correction. At its most corrupted, mob exultation completely blinds a community to imminent danger, as seen when the people of Lot’s town came forward revelling toward his guests, thoroughly oblivious to the impending doom that their behavior had invited (15:67).

How should believers handle success and loss?

Human nature fluctuates wildly with changing circumstances: when granted a taste of divine mercy, man immediately rejoices in it, but when harm befalls him due to what he has done with his own hands, he abruptly turns ungrateful (42:48). To counter this instability, the Quran mandates a grounded emotional baseline, severing the link between material outcomes and personal worth. Believers are instructed not to grieve excessively over what they miss, nor to gloat over what they gain, establishing a steady equilibrium because God does not love the conceited and boastful (57:23). True faith requires consciously stepping away from the intoxicating highs of worldly accumulation. Reflecting on the spiritual necessity of leaving behind these comforts, as al-Haralli notes (Turath Abi al-Hasan al-Haralli, 390), the very concept of physical and spiritual migration (hijrah) is defined as the act of abandoning that which one usually exults in, due to the inherent harm it carries.

The desire to construct a monument to one's own ego, revelling in both real and fabricated achievements, remains a constant human vulnerability. Yet the warning stands absolute against those who manufacture their own glory at the expense of truth. Do not think that those who exult in what they have done, and eagerly seek praise for things they have not done, will escape the torment; agonizing torment awaits them (3:188).
