The Arabic root for exposure (f-dh-h) is intimately tied to the physical breaking of light over darkness. As al-Samin al-Halabi notes (عمدة الحفاظ في تفسير أشرف الألفاظ, 3/ 235), the word fundamentally signifies clarification and uncovering, historically used to describe the morning light emerging to expose the night. This physical reality mirrors a spiritual one in the text, where the act of bringing forth what is hidden—whether giving darkness to the night and drawing out its morning brightness (79:29) or revealing the concealed motives of human beings—belongs entirely to God.

How does God expose concealed actions?

People often commit wrongs assuming that physical concealment ensures their safety. The text disrupts this assumption by pointing to God's inherent nature as the revealer of secrets. When recounting a murder among the Israelites where the perpetrators blamed one another to mask their guilt, the judgment is absolute: "God was to bring what you had concealed to light" (2:72). The futility of hiding is framed cosmically. Hiding a crime is meaningless before the One "who brings forth what is hidden in the heavens and earth and knows both what you people conceal and what you declare" (27:25). Exposure in this sense is not merely about facts becoming known, but about the specific shame and disgrace ('aar) attached to a person's unveiled actions, a linguistic nuance highlighted by Abu Hayyan (البحر المحيط في التفسير - ط الفكر, 6/ 481).

What is Satan’s role in vulnerability?

While divine exposure brings truth to light, Satan's exposure strips away dignity. The earliest instance of human vulnerability is driven by Satan's deception in the Garden. He whispered to the first couple specifically "so as to expose their nakedness, which had been hidden from them" (7:20). He achieved this physical exposure by masking his intent, lying that the forbidden tree would make them angels or immortals. Satan continues to orchestrate exposure by distorting human perception, leaving people spiritually unguarded. When an emissary found the Queen of Sheba and her people worshipping the sun instead of God, the explanation given was that "Satan has made their deeds seem alluring to them, and diverted them from the right path" (27:24). By making the unnatural seem appealing, he exposes people to error while blinding them to their own misguidance.

When do hidden intentions finally surface?

The tension of living a double life culminates in the terror of being found out. During the Prophet's time, those harboring disbelief while feigning faith lived in constant anxiety of divine revelation. "The hypocrites fear that a sura will be revealed exposing what is in their hearts" (9:64). The response to their nervous mockery is a promise of absolute certainty: "say, ‘Carry on with your jokes: God will bring about what you fear!’" The final, inescapable exposure occurs when all illusions crafted by wrongdoers fall away. "The evil of their actions will [then] become clear to them. The punishment they mocked will engulf them" (45:33).
