Quranic theme

knows that beyond comprehension

16 verses

Every falling leaf, whether fresh or withered, and every single grain resting in the darkness of the earth is inscribed in a clear Record (6:59). The Quran establishes the division between what is observable and what is beyond comprehension not as an abstract theory, but as the defining reality of God’s absolute awareness. He holds the keys to what is hidden, possessing complete knowledge of the land, the sea, and the unobservable realms of the universe. This awareness encompasses the physical environment as well as the quietest, unspoken thoughts contained within the human heart (35:38).

The scope of the hidden and the open

The unseen includes everything beyond human perception—from the scale of the heavens to the internal motives of people. God is described repeatedly as the Knower of both the hidden and the open, and the text affirms, "He is God: there is no god other than Him" (59:22). He created the heavens and the earth for a true purpose, and His knowledge spans both realms completely: "He knows what is not seen as well as what is seen; He is the Great, the Most High" (13:9). Whether it involves the vast secrets of the cosmos (49:18) or the intimate thoughts held in a person's chest, nothing escapes His sight. His limitless knowledge is frequently paired with His attributes of ultimate authority and compassion, referring to Him as the Almighty, the Merciful (32:6), and the Lord of Mercy, the Giver of Mercy (59:22).

The futility of human excuses

Because God knows the unseen, human beings cannot successfully conceal their true motives or rely on false justifications. When individuals returned from a military expedition with excuses for their absence, the believers were instructed to cut through the pretense: "Do not make excuses. We do not believe you: God has told us about you" (9:94). Attempting to hide behind falsehoods is useless when dealing with the One who already knows both the seen and the unseen. Believers are instead commanded to work actively and openly: "Take action! God will see your actions—as will His Messenger and the believers" (9:105). Every effort is witnessed, and eventually, all individuals are returned to Him, at which point they will be confronted directly with exactly what they have done (9:94).

The inevitable return and judgment

God's absolute knowledge guarantees precise justice at the end of human existence. People instinctively try to evade mortality, but they are warned, "The death you run away from will come to meet you" (62:8). That meeting serves as the mandatory return to the Knower of the unseen as well as the seen, who will then recount every past deed in detail. When the Trumpet is blown, all control belongs exclusively to Him, the All Wise and the All Aware (6:73). On the Day when He says, "Be," it will be, because His word is the truth.

Because He alone possesses the full record of what happened in the open and what was harbored in secret, He is the only one equipped to settle deeply entrenched human disputes. As the Creator of the heavens and the earth, He will ultimately judge between His servants regarding all their differences (39:46). "My Lord hurls the Truth down," the Quran states, affirming His absolute grasp of reality, for He has full knowledge of all that is unseen (34:48).

6:59 Al-An'am

He has the keys to the unseen: no one knows them but Him. He knows all that is in the land and sea. No leaf falls without His knowledge, nor is there a single grain in the darkness of the earth, or anything, fresh or withered, that is not written in a clear Record.

6:73 Al-An'am

It is He who created the heavens and the earth for a true purpose. On the Day when He says, ‘Be,’ it will be: His word is the truth. All control on the Day the Trumpet is blown belongs to Him. He knows the seen and the unseen: He is the All Wise, the All Aware.

So those who have been given the Scripture will be certain and those who believe will have their faith increased: neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers will have any doubts, but the sick at heart and the disbelievers will say, ‘What could God mean by this description?’ God leaves whoever He will to stray and guides whoever He will- no one knows your Lord’s forces except Him- this [description] is a warning to mortals.
