learning of it through divination forbidden
5 verses
The attempt to pry into the unseen or divide earthly fortunes through occult rituals is treated not as a harmless superstition, but as a deliberate violation of boundaries. The text confronts divination on two distinct fronts: the physical rituals of casting lots on earth, and the supernatural efforts of unseen beings to eavesdrop on the heavens. In both cases, the door to hidden knowledge is firmly shut. Divination is stripped of its mystique and categorized alongside gross idolatry, physical impurity, and futile attempts to breach a guarded sky.
Why are divining arrows grouped with dietary laws and intoxicants?
Rather than isolating divination as a purely spiritual error, the text roots it firmly among tangible, physical vices. In verse 5:3, the specific practice of allotting shares by drawing marked arrows is explicitly forbidden in the exact same breath as consuming carrion, blood, pig's meat, and animals sacrificed on idolatrous altars. The drawing of arrows—a method used to determine a course of action or distribute fortune—is explicitly labeled a "heinous practice." It is framed as a ritualistic impurity on par with eating an animal savaged by a beast of prey, gored, or strangled to death.
This physical and moral grouping continues in verse 5:90, where divining with arrows is tied directly to intoxicants, gambling, and idolatrous practices. The verse dismisses this entire collection of behaviors as "repugnant acts" and "Satan's doing," instructing believers to shun them entirely so that they may prosper. By placing the drawing of arrows next to gambling and alcohol, the text demystifies divination, treating it as a destructive human habit rather than a genuine channel to hidden truths. The prohibition marks a clean break from past customs; as verse 5:3 notes, the establishment of these rules meant the disbelievers had lost all hope that the believers would revert to their old religion.
What guards the unseen from supernatural interception?
While earthly divination relies on arrows and idols, supernatural divination claims to source its knowledge from unseen beings who steal information from the heavens. The Quran strips these entities of their supposed omniscience, describing a heavily militarized celestial realm where any such theft is violently repelled. The "Higher Assembly" is completely sealed off from interception, and those who attempt to pry into it cannot eavesdrop, finding themselves "pelted from every side" (37:8).
Any entity that manages to approach the boundaries of this assembly finds no safe harbor. If an eavesdropper tries to snatch a fragment of information, they are immediately pursued by a "clearly visible flame" (15:18). This blockade is absolute and active. The text even records the admission of unseen entities who acknowledge this sudden shift in celestial security. They confess that they used to sit in hidden places to listen in on the heavens, but anyone attempting to listen now finds a "shooting star lying in wait for him" (72:9).
By outlawing the earthly drawing of arrows and exposing the shattered listening posts of the heavens, the reliance on occult speculation is entirely severed. The prohibition against marked arrows arrives in the exact passage where God announces, "Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My blessing upon you" (5:3), replacing the anxious pursuit of hidden knowledge with total devotion. The avenues for stealing glimpses of the unseen are closed, leaving anyone who tries to listen at the borders of the Higher Assembly facing a sky where a shooting star lies in wait.

You are forbidden to eat carrion; blood; pig’s meat; any animal over which any name other than God’s has been invoked; any animal strangled, or victim of a violent blow or a fall, or gored or savaged by a beast of prey, unless you still slaughter it [in the correct manner]; or anything sacrificed on idolatrous altars. You are also forbidden to allot shares [of meat] by drawing marked arrows -a heinous practice- today the disbelievers have lost all hope that you will give up your religion. Do not fear them: fear Me. Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My blessing upon you, and chosen as your religion islam: [total devotion to God]; but if any of you is forced by hunger to eat forbidden food, with no intention of doing wrong, then God is most forgiving and merciful.
