11 verses

When Mary returns to her people carrying the infant Jesus, her community confronts her not by her given name, but by invoking her familial ties: "Sister of Aaron! Your father was not an evil man; your mother was not unchaste!" (19:28). This specific address weaponizes her kinship, demanding she live up to the honor of her siblings. Across its rulings and narratives, the text positions a sister as a permanent fixture in the innermost circle of family life, possessing specific financial rights, strict legal protections, and an active role in safeguarding her kin.

The Protective Role in the Story of Moses Through the history of Moses, the text details a sister's quiet, decisive intervention. After his mother places him in the river, it is his sister who receives the instruction to "Follow him" (28:11). She tracks his path along the water, watching from a distance without Pharaoh's people realizing her connection. When the infant Moses is brought to the palace and miraculously refuses to feed from any wet nurses, his sister steps forward with a life-saving solution (28:12). She asks his captors, "Shall I tell you about a household which could bring him up for you and take good care of him?" (28:12). This calculated risk reunites the infant with his mother, turning an impossible separation into an occasion for the mother to "rejoice and not grieve" (20:40).

Inheritance Shares for Surviving Sisters The Quran assigns explicit financial allocations to a sister when a sibling dies leaving neither parents nor children. If a man leaves behind a single sister, she is entitled to half of his estate, while a brother acts as the sole heir if a sister dies childless (4:176). If the deceased leaves two sisters, they receive two-thirds of the inheritance between them (4:176). When a mixed group of surviving brothers and sisters inherits, the male is allotted twice the share of the female (4:176). In another scenario involving a single brother or sister, he or she takes one-sixth, and if there are more siblings, they share one-third (4:12). These distributions are executed only after debts or bequests are paid, a directive labeled a "commandment from God" designed to ensure no financial harm is done to any party (4:12).

Marriage Prohibitions and Household Boundaries Men are permanently forbidden from taking their sisters, milk-sisters, the daughters of their sisters, or two sisters simultaneously as wives (4:23). As Al-Wahidi notes (التفسير البسيط, 6/ 425), the listing of forbidden female relatives up to the nieces constitutes a categorical prohibition that cannot become lawful under any circumstance. Because of this absolute boundary, interactions with a sister are legally insulated from the strict modesty requirements applied to strangers. Believing women are permitted to reveal their charms and let their headscarves down in the presence of their brothers and their sisters' sons (24:31). This same standard of privacy directly applied to the Prophet's wives (33:55).

This familial relationship carries a built-in openness extending to the physical home. Believers incur no blame for eating freely in the houses of their sisters, whether dining in company or separately (24:61). When crossing the threshold into these familiar spaces, family members are simply instructed to meet one another with a greeting of blessing and goodness as enjoined by God (24:61).

4:12 An-Nisa

You inherit half of what your wives leave, if they have no children; if they have children, you inherit a quarter. [In all cases, the distribution comes] after payment of any bequests or debts. If you have no children, your wives’ share is a quarter; if you have children, your wives get an eighth. [In all cases, the distribution comes] after payment of any bequests or debts. If a man or a woman dies leaving no children or parents, but a single brother or sister, he or she should take one-sixth of the inheritance; if there are more siblings, they share one-third between them. [In all cases, the distribution comes] after payment of any bequests or debts, with no harm done to anyone: this is a commandment from God: God is all knowing and benign to all.

You are forbidden to take as wives your mothers, daughters, sisters, paternal and maternal aunts, the daughters of brothers and daughters of sisters, your milk-mothers and milk-sisters, your wives’ mothers, the stepdaughters in your care- those born of women with whom you have consummated marriage, if you have not consummated the marriage, then you will not be blamed- wives of your begotten sons, two sisters simultaneously- with the exception of what is past: God is most forgiving and merciful-

4:176 An-Nisa

They ask you [Prophet] for a ruling. Say, ‘God gives you a ruling about inheritance from someone who dies childless with no surviving parents. If a man leaves a sister, she is entitled to half of the inheritance; if she has no child her brother is her sole heir; if there are two sisters, they are entitled to two-thirds of the inheritance between them, but if there are surviving brothers and sisters, the male is entitled to twice the share of the female. God makes this clear to you so that you do not make mistakes: He has full knowledge of everything.’

God will say, ‘Join the crowds of jinn and humans who have gone before you into the Fire.’ Every crowd curses its fellow crowd as it enters, then, when they are all gathered inside, the last of them will say of the first, ‘Our Lord, it was they who led us astray: give them double punishment in the Fire’- God says, ‘Every one of you will have double punishment, though you do not know it’-

19:28 Maryam

Your sister went out, saying, “I will tell you someone who will nurse him,” then We returned you to your mother so that she could rejoice and not grieve. Later you killed a man, but We saved you from distress and tried you with other tests. You stayed among the people of Midian for years, then you came here as I ordained.

And tell believing women that they should lower their glances, guard their private parts, and not display their charms beyond what [it is acceptable] to reveal; they should let their headscarves fall to cover their necklines and not reveal their charms except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their womenfolk, their slaves, such men as attend them who have no sexual desire, or children who are not yet aware of women’s nakedness; they should not stamp their feet so as to draw attention to any hidden charms. Believers, all of you, turn to God so that you may prosper.
