Fleeing toward a foreign land with nothing but a prayer for direction, Moses sets out for Midian. The Quran records his plea on the road: "May my Lord guide me to the right way" (28:22). This marks a vulnerable transition in his life. He arrives as a fugitive seeking refuge, but within a short span of time, he secures a home, employment, and a family. The events unfold entirely through a single act of unsolicited help and a plea made in the shade.

What happened at the well in Midian?

When Moses reaches the waters of Midian, he finds a group of men watering their flocks. Standing apart from this crowd, he notices two women actively keeping their own sheep back (28:23). He steps forward to ask what is the matter with them. The women explain the practical difficulty of their situation: they cannot bring their animals to the water until the male shepherds have finished and taken their sheep away. They also note that their father is a very old man, explaining why they are the ones handling the flocks.

Moses immediately takes on the labor, watering the flocks for them. Exhausted, he withdraws into the shade. Having left everything behind and possessing nothing in this new territory, he makes a direct supplication: "My Lord, I am in dire need of whatever good thing You may send me" (28:24).

How did Moses secure employment?

The answer to his prayer arrives directly. One of the two women returns to the shade, walking shyly, with a message. She tells Moses that her father is asking for him because he wants to reward him for watering their flocks (28:25). Moses accompanies her and meets the elderly father, telling the older man his full story.

Hearing the circumstances of his flight, the father offers the fugitive immediate reassurance, telling him, "Do not be afraid, you are safe now from people who do wrong." At this point, one of the daughters steps in with a practical suggestion. She tells her father to hire Moses, pointing out that the best person to employ is someone who is a "strong, trustworthy man" (28:26). She had seen his physical strength at the well and recognized his trustworthiness in his conduct toward them.

What were the terms of the marriage?

The old man recognizes the value of Moses's character and extends an offer that provides the stranger with both a livelihood and kinship. He tells Moses that he would like to marry him to one of his daughters (28:27). The condition for the marriage is a clear labor agreement: Moses must serve him for a term of eight years.

The father adds a provision for a longer stay, stating that if Moses completes ten years of service, it will be of his own free will. The older man assures Moses of his good intentions, stating that he does not want to make things difficult and that, God willing, Moses will find him to be a fair man.

Moses accepts the proposal, establishing the boundaries of the contract. He clarifies that whichever of the two terms he fulfills—the mandatory eight years or the voluntary ten—there must be no injustice toward him. He secures his new life, his marriage, and his employment without local authorities or written documents, sealing the decade-long commitment by stating, "God is witness to what we say" (28:28).
