Allah’s favours to Israelites
15 verses
Addressed directly by their lineage, the Children of Israel are commanded to recall a period when they were distinctly favoured over all other people (2:47). This elevation did not begin with wealth or empire, but with extraction from severe generational trauma. Under Pharaoh’s rule, they were subjected to a systematic slaughter of their newborn sons while their women were spared—a condition described as a massive trial from their Lord (2:49). Their history documents their subsequent liberation and the continuous series of physical rescues, spiritual pardons, and strict conditions that followed them into the desert.
How were the Israelites rescued and sustained? The physical deliverance of the Israelites culminated dramatically at the edge of the water. They were saved when the sea was parted for them, allowing safe passage while they watched Pharaoh’s pursuing forces drown right before their eyes (2:50). Once completely free from Egypt, their survival in the barren landscape required direct celestial provision. They were shielded from the harsh desert sun by clouds deliberately sent to cover them with shade (2:57). When they needed sustenance, they did not have to cultivate the earth; instead, manna and quails were sent down to them from above. They were instructed simply to eat from the good things provided for them, yet their subsequent actions showed that despite these effortless provisions, they ultimately wronged themselves.
What guidance and pardons did they receive? Beyond physical survival, the Israelites were granted the Scripture through Moses, serving as the critical means to distinguish right from wrong so they might remain guided (2:53). Yet, their spiritual reception was turbulent. When Moses was called away for an appointed forty nights on Mount Sinai, the people fell into worshipping a sculpted calf, committing a terrible wrong (2:51). Moses confronted them upon his return, declaring they had wronged themselves, and delivered a severe condition for their redemption: they had to turn to their Maker and kill the guilty among them. Following this strict measure, their repentance was accepted by the Ever Relenting, the Most Merciful (2:54).
Even after this profound pardon—given so that they might be thankful (2:52)—their demands escalated. They flatly told Moses they would not believe him until they saw God face to face. This audacity resulted in them being struck by thunderbolts as they looked on. Remarkably, they were revived after their death, granted yet another opportunity to show gratitude (2:55, 2:56).
What conditions accompanied these blessings? The continuous flow of pardons and provisions came with clear directives on how to behave. When they approached a new settlement, they were told to enter the town and eat freely there as they willed. However, the physical entry required a deliberate spiritual posture: they had to pass through its gate humbly, asking "Relieve us!" (2:58). In exchange for this simple act of humility, they were promised forgiveness for their sins and increased rewards for those who do good.
Looming over all these historical favors, however, is a severe command to guard themselves against a future Day when no soul will stand in place of another, when no intercession will be accepted for it, nor any ransom, and when they will not find any help (2:48).

Children of Israel, remember how I blessed you and favoured you over other people.
Guard yourselves against a Day when no soul will stand in place of another, no intercession will be accepted for it, nor any ransom; nor will they be helped.
Remember when We saved you from Pharaoh’s people, who subjected you to terrible torment, slaughtering your sons and sparing only your women- this was a great trial from your Lord-
and when We parted the sea for you, so saving you and drowning Pharaoh’s people right before your eyes.
We appointed forty nights for Moses [on Mount Sinai] and then, while he was away, you took to worshipping the calf- a terrible wrong.
Even then We forgave you, so that you might be thankful.
Remember when We gave Moses the Scripture, and the means to distinguish [right and wrong], so that you might be guided.
Moses said to his people, ‘My people, you have wronged yourselves by worshipping the calf, so repent to your Maker and kill [the guilty among] you. That is the best you can do in the eyes of your Maker.’ He accepted your repentance: He is the Ever Relenting and the Most Merciful.
Remember when you said, ‘Moses, we will not believe you until we see God face to face.’ At that, thunderbolts struck you as you looked on.
Then We revived you after your death, so that you might be thankful.
We made the clouds cover you with shade, and sent manna and quails down to you, saying, ‘Eat the good things We have provided for you.’ It was not Us they wronged; they wronged themselves.
Remember when We said, ‘Enter this town and eat freely there as you will, but enter its gate humbly and say, “Relieve us!” Then We shall forgive you your sins and increase the rewards of those who do good.’
But the wrongdoers substituted a different word from the one they had been given. So, because they persistently disobeyed, We sent a plague down from the heavens upon the wrongdoers.
Remember when Moses prayed for water for his people and We said to him, ‘Strike the rock with your staff.’ Twelve springs gushed out, and each group knew its drinking place. ‘Eat and drink the sustenance God has provided and do not cause corruption in the land.’
Remember when you said, ‘Moses, we cannot bear to eat only one kind of food, so pray to your Lord to bring out for us some of the earth’s produce, its herbs and cucumbers, its garlic, lentils, and onions.’ He said, ‘Would you exchange better for worse? Go to Egypt and there you will find what you have asked for.’ They were struck with humiliation and wretchedness, and they incurred the wrath of God because they persistently rejected His messages and killed prophets contrary to all that is right. All this was because they disobeyed and were lawbreakers.
