sun
12 verses
God swears an oath by the sun in its morning brightness (91:1), establishing it as a massive, visible witness to divine power. Yet the Quran immediately strips away the mythological aura ancient cultures placed upon it, defining it instead as a structured, functioning creation. It is repeatedly described as a "shining radiance" and a "blazing lamp" suspended in the heavens (10:5, 78:13). Alongside the illuminating moon and the vast constellations, this radiant light serves a specific, mechanical purpose in the physical world (25:61). God points to the shifting of shadows as evidence of this precise design, explaining that He lengthens the shade across the earth and makes the sun its direct indicator, even though He could have made the shade stand still if He willed (25:45).
What is the sun's function in the sky?
The Quranic perspective on the sun focuses heavily on its utility for human life, its movement, and its mathematical precision. It is not an arbitrary source of heat, but a tool harnessed by divine command, alongside the stars and the moon, to be of direct benefit to humanity (16:12). God established the sun as a lamp in the heavens and determined phases for it so that people might track the passing of time, count the number of years, and calculate their days (71:16, 10:5).
These verses emphasize that God did not create these celestial bodies without a true purpose. Their exact movements are signs explained to those who understand, and they offer evidence for those who use their reason (10:5, 16:12). Furthermore, the sun does not sit static in the sky; it is in continuous, measured motion. It was created alongside the night and the day, with both the sun and the moon floating in their own designated orbits (21:33).
Can the sun be worshipped?
Despite its overwhelming light and vital role in sustaining life, the Quran categorically rejects any reverence directed toward the sun itself. It is framed as an entity entirely in submission to God. The text asks the Prophet if he realizes that the sun, along with the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, and the animals, all submit to the Creator (22:18).
Even the idolaters of the time recognized this structural hierarchy. If asked who created the heavens and the earth and who harnessed the sun and the moon, they would readily admit it was God (29:61). The Quran points out the profound contradiction in acknowledging the Creator of the sun while turning away from Him in practice. Because God does whatever He will—honoring those who submit and disgracing those who deserve punishment—the sun is merely one of His subjects (22:18). The text issues a direct prohibition against celestial idolatry, commanding people not to bow down in worship to the sun or the moon, but to bow only to the God who created them (41:37).
Will the blazing lamp last forever?
The sun's immense radiance and steady orbit are bound to the temporary lifespan of the current world. Its absolute submission to God means it operates strictly within the timeframe He decreed for the heavens and the earth. The blazing lamp that dictates the days and casts the earth's shadows will not burn indefinitely. When the Quran details the collapse of the material universe, it points to a moment when the natural order is dismantled and the sun is entirely shrouded in darkness (81:1).

It is He who made the sun a shining radiance and the moon a light, determining phases for it so that you might know the number of years and how to calculate time. God did not create all these without a true purpose; He explains His signs to those who understand.
By His command He has made the night and day, the sun, moon, and stars all of benefit to you. There truly are signs in this for those who use their reason.
It is He who created night and day, the sun and the moon, each floating in its orbit.
Do you not realize [Prophet] that everything in the heavens and earth submits to God: the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, and the animals? So do many human beings, though for many others punishment is well deserved. Anyone disgraced by God will have no one to honour him: God does whatever He will.
Do you not see how your Lord lengthens the shade? If He had willed, He could have made it stand still- We made the sun its indicator-
Exalted is He who put constellations in the heavens, a radiant light, and an illuminating moon-
If you ask the disbelievers who created the heavens and earth and who harnessed the sun and moon, they are sure to say, ‘God.’ Then why do they turn away from Him?
The night, the day, the sun, the moon, are only a few of His signs. Do not bow down in worship to the sun or the moon, but bow down to God who created them, if it is truly Him that you worship.
placed the moon as a light in them and the sun as a lamp,
and make a blazing lamp?
When the sun is shrouded in darkness,
By the sun in its morning brightness
