The Arabic term Al-Ghani (The Rich) primarily defines a state of being completely free from need. As Al-Raghib al-Isfahani observes (Al-Mufradat fi Gharib al-Quran, 615), absolute independence from any necessity belongs solely to God. Abu Bakr al-Jaza'iri echoes this (Aysar al-Tafasir, 2/122), emphasizing that the Lord who commands and forbids His servants is entirely free of any need for them. When the text applies the concept of wealth to human beings, the focus immediately shifts away from raw accumulation toward the dignity of self-sufficiency. God points to this specific transformation in the life of the Prophet, asking, "Did He not find you in need and make you self-sufficient?" (93:8).
How does the Quran define human wealth?
Material abundance does not inherently confer virtue, and possessing it can become a liability when it leads to the avoidance of obligation. The text explicitly blames individuals who ask for exemptions from their communal duties despite their wealth, stating that God has sealed their hearts so they do not understand (9:93).
Instead, true richness frequently manifests as physical dignity and restraint. Believers are instructed to give to those who are entirely occupied in God’s way and unable to travel the land for trade. Because of their strict self-restraint and refusal to beg persistently, an uninformed observer might mistakenly think them rich (2:273). Commenting on this phenomenon, Muhammad Abu Zahra (Zahrat al-Tafasir, 4/1810) notes that real wealth is not an abundance of material goods, but rather the richness and contentment of the soul itself.
What rules govern the rich in society?
The presence of concentrated wealth rigorously tests a community's commitment to equity. Economic structures are commanded to prevent hoarding actively. When distributing the gains turned over to the Messenger from village inhabitants, shares are deliberately assigned to orphans, the needy, and stranded travelers. The stated reason for this exact distribution is "so that they do not just circulate among those of you who are rich" (59:7).
In the judicial realm, the financial status of a defendant or plaintiff must not warp the scales. Believers are ordered to uphold strict justice and bear witness for God, even if the verdict falls against themselves, their parents, or close relatives. The text insists that whether the person on trial is rich or poor, God can best take care of both, and human desires must not distort this justice (4:135).
Who provides enrichment?
Financial anxiety is consistently countered by pointing back to God's sole possession of true wealth. When the early Muslims were ordered to bar polytheists from the Sacred Mosque, they feared economic ruin, but the text assured them that God would enrich them out of His bounty if He pleased (9:28).
This same promise of provision extends to the vulnerable establishing families. The community is told to marry off the single among them and the fit among their slaves, with the guarantee that if they are poor, God will provide for them (24:32). Those unable to marry are commanded to remain chaste until God gives them enough out of His bounty, and masters are told to give enslaved individuals seeking freedom some of the wealth God has provided (24:33).
Conversely, arrogance over earthly wealth draws severe correction. Spitefulness was the only response of those who became defiant after God and His Messenger enriched them from His bounty, leading to a promise of punishment in this world and the Hereafter with no protectors on earth (9:74). When a faction sneered, "So God is poor, while we are rich," the response was a declaration that their words would be recorded alongside their historical killing of prophets, culminating in the decree, "Taste the torment of the scorching fire" (3:181).

[Give] to those needy who are wholly occupied in God’s way and cannot travel in the land [for trade]. The unknowing might think them rich because of their self-restraint, but you will recognize them by their characteristic of not begging persistently. God is well aware of any good you give.
God has certainly heard the words of those who sneer, ‘So God is poor, while we are rich’. We shall record everything they say––as well as their killing of prophets in defiance of all that is right- and We shall say to them, ‘Taste the torment of the scorching fire.
You who believe, uphold justice and bear witness to God, even if it is against yourselves, your parents, or your close relatives. Whether the person is rich or poor, God can best take care of both. Refrain from following your own desire, so that you can act justly- if you distort or neglect justice, God is fully aware of what you do.
Believers, those who ascribe partners to God are truly unclean: do not let them come near the Sacred Mosque after this year. If you are afraid you may become poor, [bear in mind that] God will enrich you out of His bounty if He pleases: God is all knowing and wise.
They swear by God that they did not, but they certainly did speak words of defiance and became defiant after having submitted; they tried to do something, though they did not achieve it, ––being spiteful was their only response to God and His Messenger enriching them out of His bounty. They would be better off turning back [to God]: if they turn away, God will punish them in this world and the Hereafter, and there will be no one on earth to protect or help them.
The ones open to blame are those who asked you for exemption despite their wealth, and who preferred to be with those who stay behind. God has sealed their hearts: they do not understand.
Marry off the single among you and those of your male and female slaves who are fit [for marriage]. If they are poor, God will provide for them from His bounty: God’s bounty is infinite and He is all knowing.
Those who are unable to marry should keep chaste until God gives them enough out of His bounty. If any of your slaves wish to pay for their freedom, make a contract with them accordingly, if you know they have good in them, and give them some of the wealth God has given you. Do not force your slave-girls into prostitution, when they themselves wish to remain honourable, in your quest for the short-term gains of this world, although, if they are forced, God will be forgiving and merciful to them.
Whatever gains God has turned over to His Messenger from the inhabitants of the villages belong to God, the Messenger, kinsfolk, orphans, the needy, the traveller in need- this is so that they do not just circulate among those of you who are rich––so accept whatever the Messenger gives you, and abstain from whatever he forbids you. Be mindful of God: God is severe in punishment.
Did He not find you in need and make you self-sufficient?
