Reconciliation

5 verses

Acknowledging that human souls are inherently prone to selfishness, the Quran frames islah (reconciliation) not as a natural state of effortless harmony, but as a deliberate effort to prevent relationships from breaking (4:128). It prescribes structured interventions and conscious intent, making the act of putting things right a shared responsibility that invites divine assistance. As al-Tabari notes, the scope of islah extends beyond resolving active conflicts to intervening when disagreement is merely feared, aiming to head off a rupture before it fully materializes

How is mediation structured when a marriage breaks down?

The text provides specific mechanisms for couples facing a potential divorce. When a rift is feared, the Quran mandates appointing two arbiters—one from the husband’s family and one from the wife’s (4:35). Al-Sakhawi observes that these arbiters are tasked with determining the most appropriate course of action, whether that involves negotiating a settlement or recognizing when separation is the only fair outcome Crucially, the success of this mediation hinges on the inner intentions of the disputing pair: if the couple genuinely wants to put things right, God brings about the reconciliation (4:35).

When a wife anticipates high-handedness or alienation from her husband, they are encouraged to reach a peaceful settlement directly, grounded in the principle that "peace is best" (4:128). Even when a formal separation has already begun, the door to restoring the relationship remains conditionally open. Divorced women must observe a waiting period of three monthly cycles, during which their husbands have the right to take them back, provided the men genuinely wish to mend the relationship rather than manipulate the waiting period (2:228). The text insists that wives retain rights similar to their obligations, and any return to the marriage must be recognized as fair.

How does reconciliation apply beyond the household?

The urgency of islah establishes a baseline for wider societal interactions. Ibn Ajiba highlights that the command to reconcile two disputing individuals in a domestic setting serves to prove the broader obligation of mending fractures among larger groups This communal aspect is structurally supported by the distribution of alms, where one of the designated categories for mandatory charity is specifically aimed at those whose hearts need winning over (9:60).

Yet the text warns against using the language of harmony to mask destructive actions. It describes individuals who bring disaster upon themselves through their own deeds, only to later swear by God that they merely intended to do good and achieve harmony (4:62). True reconciliation demands honest intent, not post-hoc justifications. External arbitration, financial settlements, and family interventions serve only as frameworks to help individuals move past their inherent self-interest. Ultimately, the text leaves the moral weight on the disputing parties themselves, affirming that if they actively choose to do good and remain mindful of God, He is well aware of all that they do (4:128).

2:228 Al-Baqarah

Divorced women must wait for three monthly periods before remarrying, and, if they really believe in God and the Last Day, it is not lawful for them to conceal what God has created in their wombs: their husbands would do better to take them back during this period, provided they wish to put things right. Wives have [rights] similar to their [obligations], according to what is recognized to be fair, and husbands have a degree [of right] over them: [both should remember that] God is almighty and wise.

4:35 An-Nisa

If you [believers] fear that a couple may break up, appoint one arbiter from his family and one from hers. Then, if the couple want to put things right, God will bring about a reconciliation between them: He is all knowing, all aware.

4:62 An-Nisa

If disaster strikes them because of what they themselves have done, then they will come to you, swearing by God, ‘We only wanted to do good and achieve harmony.’

4:128 An-Nisa

If a wife fears high-handedness or alienation from her husband, neither of them will be blamed if they come to a peaceful settlement, for peace is best. Although human souls are prone to selfishness, if you do good and are mindful of God, He is well aware of all that you do.

9:60 At-Tawbah

Alms are meant only for the poor, the needy, those who administer them, those whose hearts need winning over, to free slaves and help those in debt, for God’s cause, and for travellers in need. This is ordained by God; God is all knowing and wise.
