55 verses

The Quran explicitly references the concept of a parable (mathal) across 55 verses, drawing on agriculture, weather, and livestock to render abstract concepts tangible. As al-Raghib al-Isfahani notes, the term mathal in these contexts often functions as a direct attribute or detailed description rather than just a loose comparison (Al-Mufradat fi Gharib al-Quran, 759). By grounding moral and theological arguments in the physical world, these verses force a reader to look past the surface of an event and recognize the spiritual reality underneath it.

Why does God draw comparisons to gnats and storms?

The text states that God does not shy away from using something as small as a gnat for a parable (2:26). This challenges human assumptions about what deserves attention. When confronted with this tiny insect, believers recognize the truth from their Lord, while those who reject faith ask what God could possibly mean by such a comparison. The resulting confusion or clarity is deliberate: the same parable leads the rebellious astray while guiding others to the right path.

For those trapped in disbelief, the analogies turn terrifying and sensory. They are compared to people caught under a sudden cloudburst, thrusting their fingers into their ears to block out thunderclaps in fear of death, while lightning flashes so brightly it almost snatches away their sight (2:19–20). Alternatively, they are like someone who labors in the dark to kindle a fire; just as it lights up their surroundings, God takes the light away, leaving them deaf, dumb, blind, and unable to return (2:17–18).

How do parables measure the worth of charity?

To illustrate the fragility of insincere actions, the Quran turns to agriculture. A person who gives charity merely to be seen by people, or who cancels out their giving with reminders and hurtful words, is likened to a smooth rock covered with a thin layer of earth (2:264). When heavy rain strikes it, the soil washes away entirely, leaving the rock bare and the person with no reward for their works.

In contrast, those who spend their wealth seeking God’s approval are like a lush garden planted on a high hill (2:265). Heavy rain causes it to produce double its normal yield, and even if no downpour occurs, the morning dew is enough to sustain it. The most urgent warning regarding lost efforts is the image of a man afflicted with old age and feeble children who owns a beautiful garden of palm trees, vines, and flowing streams—only for a fiery whirlwind to suddenly strike and burn it to the ground just when he needs it most (2:266).

How do analogies explain theology and resurrection?

The text uses strict, physical comparisons to clarify theological disputes and prove the certainty of life after death. When addressing the nature of Jesus, the text states he is exactly like Adam in God's eyes: created from dust, commanded to "Be," and he was (3:59). To demonstrate the resurrection, the Quran recounts a man passing by a ruined town, doubting how God could ever give it life (2:259). God caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him. To prove the passage of time, God pointed out that the man's food and drink were still fresh, while assembling the scattered bones of his dead donkey and clothing them with flesh before his eyes.

As Ibn Taymiyyah observes, reflecting on these physical examples serves as a direct analogy for establishing absolute conviction (Al-Amthal al-Qur'aniyyah al-Qiyasiyyah, 1/96). Those who ignore these clear signs are likened to beasts that hear nothing but the shouts of a herdsman, understanding nothing of the actual call (2:171). The physical world acts as a mirror for the human condition, urging believers to remember the grace that brought their divided hearts together as brothers, holding fast to God's rope after being saved from the brink of a pit of Fire (3:103).

2:17 Al-Baqarah

They are like people who [labour to] kindle a fire: when it lights up everything around them, God takes away all their light, leaving them in utter darkness, unable to see-

2:18 Al-Baqarah

deaf, dumb, and blind: they will never return.

2:19 Al-Baqarah

Or [like people who, under] a cloudburst from the sky, with its darkness, thunder, and lightning, put their fingers into their ears to keep out the thunderclaps for fear of death- God surrounds the disbelievers.

2:20 Al-Baqarah

The lightning almost snatches away their sight: whenever it flashes on them they walk on and when darkness falls around them they stand still. If God so willed, He could take away their hearing and sight: God has power over everything.

2:26 Al-Baqarah

God does not shy from drawing comparisons even with something as small as a gnat, or larger: the believers know it is the truth from their Lord, but the disbelievers say, ‘What does God mean by such a comparison?’ Through it He makes many go astray and leads many to the right path. But it is only the rebels He makes go astray:

2:171 Al-Baqarah

Calling to disbelieversis like a herdsman calling to things that hear nothing but a shout and a cry: they are deaf, dumb, and blind, and they understand nothing.

2:259 Al-Baqarah

Or take the one who passed by a ruined town. He said, ‘How will God give this life when it has died?’ So God made him die for a hundred years, and then raised him up, saying, ‘How long did you stay like that?’ He answered, ‘A day, or part of a day.’ God said, ‘No, you stayed like that for a hundred years. Look at your food and drink: they have not gone bad. Look at your donkey- We will make you a sign for the people- look at the bones: see how We bring them together and clothe them with flesh!’ When all became clear to him, he said, ‘Now I know that God has power over everything.’

2:264 Al-Baqarah

You who believe, do not cancel out your charitable deeds with reminders and hurtful words, like someone who spends his wealth only to be seen by people, not believing in God and the Last Day. Such a person is like a rock with earth on it: heavy rain falls and leaves it completely bare. Such people get no rewards for their works: God does not guide the disbelievers.

2:265 Al-Baqarah

But those who spend their wealth in order to gain God’s approval, and as an affirmation of their own faith, are like a garden on a hill: heavy rain falls and it produces double its normal yield; even if no heavy rain falls, it will still be watered by the dew. God sees all that you do.

2:266 Al-Baqarah

Would any of you like to have a garden of palm trees and vines, graced with flowing streams and all kinds of produce, which, when you are afflicted with old age and feeble offspring, is struck by a fiery whirlwind and burnt down? In this way God makes His messages clear to you, so that you may reflect on them.

3:59 Ali 'Imran

In God’s eyes Jesus is just like Adam: He created him from dust, said to him, ‘Be’, and he was.

3:103 Ali 'Imran

Hold fast to God’s rope all together; do not split into factions. Remember God’s favour to you: you were enemies and then He brought your hearts together and you became brothers by His grace; you were about to fall into a pit of Fire and He saved you from it- in this way God makes His revelations clear to you so that you may be rightly guided.

3:117 Ali 'Imran

and whatever they give away in this life will be nullified: a frosty wind strikes and destroys the harvest of people who have wronged themselves. It was not God who wronged them; they wronged themselves.

7:175 Al-A'raf

[Prophet], tell them the story of the man to whom We gave Our messages: he sloughed them off, so Satan took him as his follower and he went astray-

7:176 Al-A'raf

if it had been Our will, We could have used these signs to raise him high, but instead he clung to the earth and followed his own desires- he was like a dog that pants with a lolling tongue whether you drive it away or leave it alone. Such is the image of those who reject Our signs. Tell them the story so that they may reflect.

7:177 Al-A'raf

How foul is the image of those who reject Our signs! It is themselves they wrong:

9:109 At-Tawbah

Which is better, the person who founds his building on consciousness of God and desire for His good pleasure, or the person who founds his building on the brink of a crumbling precipice that will tumble down into the Fire of Hell, taking him with it? God does not guide the evildoers:

9:110 At-Tawbah

the building they have founded will always be a source of doubt within their hearts, until their hearts are cut to pieces. God is all knowing and wise.

10:24 Yunus

The life of this world is like this: rain that We send down from the sky is absorbed by the plants of the earth, from which humans and animals eat. But when the earth has taken on its finest appearance, and adorns itself, and its people think they have power over it, then the fate We commanded comes to it, by night or by day, and We reduce it to stubble, as if it had not flourished just the day before. This is the way We explain the revelations for those who reflect.

11:24 Hud

These two groups are like the blind and the deaf as compared with those who can see and hear well: can they be alike? How can you not take heed?

14:18 Ibrahim

The deeds of those who reject their Lord are like ashes that the wind blows furiously on a stormy day: they have no power over anything they have gained. This is to stray far, far away.

16:60 An-Nahl

Those who do not believe in the Hereafter should have the contemptible image, and God should have the highest one: He is the Mighty, the Wise.

16:75 An-Nahl

God presents this illustration: a slave controlled by his master, with no power over anything, and another man We have supplied with good provision, from which he gives alms privately and openly. Can they be considered equal? All praise belongs to God, but most of them do not recognize this.

16:76 An-Nahl

God presents another illustration: two men, one of them dumb, unable to do anything, a burden to his carer- whatever task he directs him to, he achieves nothing good- can he be considered equal to one who commands justice and is on the straight path?

16:112 An-Nahl

God presents the example of a town that was secure and at ease, with provisions coming to it abundantly from all places. Then it became ungrateful for God’s blessings, so God afflicted it with the garment of famine and fear, for what its people had done.

16:113 An-Nahl

A messenger who was one of them came to them, but they called him a liar. So punishment overwhelmed them in the midst of their evildoing.

17:48 Al-Isra

See what they think you are like! But they are lost and cannot find the right way.

18:32 Al-Kahf

Tell them the parable of two men: for one of them We made two gardens of grape vines, surrounded them with date palms, and put corn fields in between;

18:33 Al-Kahf

both gardens yielded fruit and did not fail in any way; We made a stream flow through them,

18:34 Al-Kahf

and so he had abundant fruit. One day, while talking to his friend, he said, ‘I have more wealth and a larger following than you.’

18:35 Al-Kahf

He went into his garden and wronged himself by saying, ‘I do not think this will ever perish,

18:36 Al-Kahf

or that the Last Hour will ever come- even if I were to be taken back to my Lord, I would certainly find something even better there.’

18:37 Al-Kahf

His companion retorted, ‘Have you no faith in Him who created you from dust, from a small drop of fluid, then shaped you into a man?

18:38 Al-Kahf

But, for me, He is God, my Lord, and I will never set up any partner with Him.

18:39 Al-Kahf

If only, when you entered your garden, you had said, “This is God’s will. There is no power not [given] by God.” Although you see I have less wealth and offspring than you,

18:40 Al-Kahf

my Lord may well give me something better than your garden, and send thunderbolts on your garden from the sky, so that it becomes a heap of barren dust;

18:41 Al-Kahf

or its water may sink so deep into the ground that you will never be able to reach it again.’

18:42 Al-Kahf

And so it was: his fruit was completely destroyed, and there he was, wringing his hands over what he had invested in it, as it drooped on its trellises, and saying, ‘I wish I had not set up any partner to my Lord.’

18:43 Al-Kahf

He had no forces to help him other than God- he could not even help himself.

18:44 Al-Kahf

In that situation, the only protection is that of God, the True God: He gives the best rewards and the best outcome.

18:45 Al-Kahf

Tell them, too, what the life of this world is like: We send water down from the skies and the earth’s vegetation absorbs it, but soon the plants turn to dry stubble scattered about by the wind: God has power over everything.

18:46 Al-Kahf

Wealth and children are the attractions of this worldly life, but lasting good works have a better reward with your Lord and give better grounds for hope.

22:31 Al-Hajj

Devote yourselves to God and assign Him no partners, for the person who does so is like someone who has been hurled down from the skies and snatched up by the birds or flung to a distant place by the wind.

22:73 Al-Hajj

People, here is an illustration, so listen carefully: those you call on beside God could not, even if they combined all their forces, create a fly, and if a fly took something away from them, they would not be able to retrieve it. How feeble are the petitioners and how feeble are those they petition!

25:33 Al-Furqan

They cannot put any argument to you without Our bringing you the truth and the best explanation.

29:41 Al-'Ankabut

Those who take protectors other than God can be compared to spiders building themselves houses- the spider’s is the frailest of all houses- if only they could understand.

29:42 Al-'Ankabut

God knows what things they call upon beside Him: He is the Mighty, the Wise.

29:43 Al-'Ankabut

Such are the comparisons We draw for people, though only the wise can grasp them.

36:78 Ya-Sin

producing arguments against Us, forgetting his own creation. He says, ‘Who can give life back to bones after they have decayed?’

39:21 Az-Zumar

Have you not considered that God sends water down from the sky, guides it along to form springs in the earth, and then, with it, brings forth vegetation of various colours, which later withers, turns yellow before your eyes, and is crumbled to dust at His command? There is truly a reminder in this for those who have understanding.
