Laughter

In its seventeenth mention across various contexts, laughter in the Quran is framed not as a random biological reflex, but as a direct creation of God. Verse 53:43 establishes this principle: "it is He who makes people laugh and weep." Early scholars viewed this as absolute; as al-Hasan al-Basri notes (Mawsu'at al-Tafsir al-Ma'thur, 20/759), God is the literal creator of both states. The text documents human laughter in moments of sudden relief or profound gratitude, but frequently contrasts these instances with the derisive laughter used by those rejecting divine signs.

How does the text depict joyous laughter?

Joyous laughter appears in moments of sudden realization or unexpected grace. When Solomon hears the warning of a tiny ant to her colony, he smiles broadly at her words (27:19). He immediately channels his amusement into a prayer, asking God to inspire him to be thankful for his blessings and admit him among the righteous. Similarly, when angels visit Abraham, his wife stands nearby and laughs (11:71). Commenting on this reaction, Muqatil suggests she laughed in response to her husband's initial fear and trembling before the three strangers (al-Jami li-Ahkam al-Quran, 9/67), just before the angels deliver the glad tidings of a son, Isaac, and a grandson, Jacob. In these instances, a smile or a laugh marks the threshold of divine favor and human relief.

Why do those who reject the truth resort to laughter?

Far more frequently, the text records laughter as an instrument of denial and arrogance. When prophets present clear evidence of their message, the immediate reaction of their opponents is mockery. When Moses presents God’s signs to Pharaoh's court, they simply laugh at them (43:47). Later, when Jesus is cited as an example of a servant chosen by God, the people laugh and jeer (43:57). The text highlights this as a deflection tactic: the disbelievers marvel at the Prophet and scoff, quickly resorting to ridicule the moment they see a sign (37:12-14). Their laughter becomes an obsession that blinds them to reality. As God tells those who mocked the faithful, they were so intent on laughing at the believers that it made them forget His warning entirely (23:110).

What is the consequence of mocking faith?

The text repeatedly warns that derisive laughter in this world is a temporary illusion. Because the life of this world is made to seem glamorous to the disbelievers, they casually laugh at those who believe (2:212). Yet, the Quran confronts this arrogance with a strict cosmic accounting. Regarding those who evade their spiritual duties, the text commands, "Let them laugh a little; they will weep a lot in return for what they have done" (9:82). The gravity of divine revelation should provoke awe rather than mockery, prompting the question to those who scoff: "Do you [people] marvel at this? Why do you laugh instead of weeping?" (53:59-60).

This dynamic culminates in an absolute reversal of states in the hereafter. Early scholars understood that the Creator of laughter and tears in this world assigns them permanently in the next; as Mujahid explains (Al-Kashf wal-Bayan, 25/168), God makes the companions of Paradise laugh in Paradise, and the people of the Fire weep in the Fire. The mockery endured by the faithful ultimately gives way to total vindication. Those who are mindful of God will be elevated far above those who laughed at them on the Day of Resurrection, where God provides immeasurably for whoever He pleases (2:212).
