Hundred

A century marks the boundary of human endurance and the limit of direct memory. When a traveler passed by a ruined town and wondered how God could give it life after its death, God caused him to die for a hundred years (2:259). Upon waking, the man believed only a day or part of a day had passed. To prove the passage of a full century, God directed him to look at his food and drink, which had not spoiled, and at the bones of his donkey, which were then brought together and clothed with flesh. In these texts, the number one hundred functions as a measure of magnitude, testing the limits of time, scaling the rewards of conviction, and setting strict boundaries in law.

Suspension of Time The passing of hundreds of years serves as a direct proof of bodily resurrection. Beyond the man kept dead for a century, the sleepers in the cave were preserved in their slumber for three hundred years, with some adding nine more (18:25). Classical exegetes analyzed the precise grammatical construction of these numbers; Al-Wahidi notes the variant recitations of "three hundred years" as reflecting specific linguistic rules of addition and specification (Al-Tafsir al-Basit, 13/592). In both instances, individuals are removed from the flow of time for hundreds of years, waking to find their physical states intact while their eras have entirely passed away.

Multiplication of Effort and Ranks When establishing the physical and spiritual capacity of believers, the text uses one hundred as a baseline for exponential growth. In military encounters, the initial command urged believers to fight with a ratio of one to ten: twenty steadfast individuals would overcome two hundred, and a steadfast hundred would defeat a thousand disbelievers (8:65). The subsequent verse lightens this burden in recognition of human weakness, resetting the mandated ratio to one to two, where a steadfast hundred will defeat two hundred by God’s permission (8:66).

This same mathematical scale shifts from war to agriculture to describe financial spending. Wealth given in God’s cause is likened to a single grain of corn that sprouts seven ears, with each ear containing a hundred grains (2:261). As classical compilers note (Mawsu'at al-Tafsir al-Ma'thur, 4/544), this specific yield of a hundred grains per ear physically illustrates how a single act of spending is multiplied seven hundred times or more for whoever God wishes. The scale of hundreds and thousands also quantifies entire nations, such as the community to whom a prophet was sent, numbering a hundred thousand people or more (37:147).

Fixed Legal Boundaries In jurisprudence, the number provides an exact ceiling for penal law. The punishment for the adulteress and the adulterer is set at precisely one hundred strikes each (24:2). The verse surrounds this exact number with strict conditions: believers must not let compassion deter them from carrying out the law, and a group of believers must be present to witness the execution of the punishment.

Whether counting the years of the dead, the lashes of a penalty, or the ranks of an army, these exact figures demand absolute certainty in unseen scales. The observer is left looking at the ruined town, watching the scattered bones of a donkey assemble after a hundred years, commanded to see how they are brought together and clothed with flesh before acknowledging that God has power over everything.
