God fulfilled His promise to you: you were routing them, with His permission, but then you faltered, disputed the order, and disobeyed, once He had brought you within sight of your goal- some of you desire the gains of this world and others desire the world to come- and then He prevented you from [defeating] them as a punishment. He has now forgiven you: God is most gracious to the believers.
Their Lord has answered them: ‘I will not allow the deeds of any one of you to be lost, whether you are male or female, each is like the other [in rewards]. I will certainly wipe out the bad deeds of those who emigrated and were driven out of their homes, who suffered harm for My cause, who fought and were killed. I will certainly admit them to Gardens graced with flowing streams, as a reward from God: the best reward is with God.’
My people, go into the holy land which God has ordained for you––do not turn back or you will be the losers.’
God has helped you [believers] on many battlefields, even on the day of the Battle of Hunayn. You were well pleased with your large numbers, but they were of no use to you: the earth seemed to close in on you despite its spaciousness, and you turned tail and fled.
When they felt Our might coming upon them, see how they tried to escape it!
- 21:13 Al-Anbya لَا تَرْكُضُوا۟ وَٱرْجِعُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ مَآ أُتْرِفْتُمْ فِيهِ وَمَسَـٰكِنِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُسْـَٔلُونَ ‘Do not try to escape. Go back to your homes and the pleasure you revelled in: you may be questioned.’
He will give a generous provision to those who migrated in God’s way and were killed or died. He is the Best Provider.
- 26:21 Ash-Shu'ara فَفَرَرْتُ مِنكُمْ لَمَّا خِفْتُكُمْ فَوَهَبَ لِى رَبِّى حُكْمًا وَجَعَلَنِى مِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ and I fled from you in fear; later my Lord gave me wisdom and made me one of His messengers.
Throw down your staff,’ but when he saw it moving like a snake, he turned and fled. ‘Moses, do not be afraid! The messengers need have no fear in My presence,
You cannot make the dead hear, you cannot make the deaf listen to your call when they turn their backs and leave,
Throw down your staff.’ When he saw his staff moving like a snake, he fled in fear and would not return. Again [he was called]: ‘Moses! Draw near! Do not be afraid, for you are one of those who are safe.
- 30:52 Ar-Rum فَإِنَّكَ لَا تُسْمِعُ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ وَلَا تُسْمِعُ ٱلصُّمَّ ٱلدُّعَآءَ إِذَا وَلَّوْا۟ مُدْبِرِينَ You [Prophet] cannot make the dead hear and you cannot make the deaf hear your call when they turn their backs and leave;
- 30:53 Ar-Rum وَمَآ أَنتَ بِهَـٰدِ ٱلْعُمْىِ عَن ضَلَـٰلَتِهِمْ ۖ إِن تُسْمِعُ إِلَّا مَن يُؤْمِنُ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا فَهُم مُّسْلِمُونَ you cannot lead the blind out of their error: the only ones you can make hear you are those who believe in Our revelations and devote themselves [to Us].
Some of them said, ‘People of Yathrib, you will not be able to withstand [the attack], so go back!’ Some of them asked the Prophet’s permission to leave, saying, ‘Our houses are exposed,’ even though they were not- they just wanted to run away:
[Prophet], say, ‘Running away will not benefit you. If you manage to escape death or slaughter, you will only be permitted to enjoy [life] for a short while.’
Jonah too was one of the messengers.
He fled to the overloaded ship.
- 40:33 Ghafir يَوْمَ تُوَلُّونَ مُدْبِرِينَ مَا لَكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِنْ عَاصِمٍ ۗ وَمَن يُضْلِلِ ٱللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُۥ مِنْ هَادٍ the Day you will turn tail and flee with no one to defend you from God! Whoever God leaves to stray will have no one to guide him.
If the disbelievers had fought against you, they would have taken flight and found no one to protect or support them:
[So, say to them, Prophet], ‘Quickly, turn to God- I am sent by Him to give you clear warning-
So [Prophet] ignore those who turn away from Our revelation, who want only the life of this world.

They give them preference over themselves, even if they too are poor: those who are saved from their own souls’ greed are truly successful.
- 59:12 Al-Hashr لَئِنْ أُخْرِجُوا۟ لَا يَخْرُجُونَ مَعَهُمْ وَلَئِن قُوتِلُوا۟ لَا يَنصُرُونَهُمْ وَلَئِن نَّصَرُوهُمْ لَيُوَلُّنَّ ٱلْأَدْبَـٰرَ ثُمَّ لَا يُنصَرُونَ if they are driven out, they will never leave with them; if they are attacked, they will never help them. Even if they did come to their aid, they would soon turn tail and flee- in the end they would have no help.
But no! There is a raging flame
- 70:16 Al-Ma'arij نَزَّاعَةً لِّلشَّوَىٰ that strips away the skin,
- 70:17 Al-Ma'arij تَدْعُوا۟ مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ and it will claim everyone who rejects the truth, turns away,
- 70:18 Al-Ma'arij وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰٓ amasses wealth and hoards it.
We know we can never frustrate God on earth; we can never escape Him.
What is the matter with them? Why do they turn away from the warning,
