The most frequent use of the word "companion" (ashab) in the Quran does not describe fleeting worldly friendships, but eternal destinations. The text repeatedly categorizes humanity into the inhabitants of the Garden and the inhabitants of the Fire, framing the afterlife as a permanent state of belonging. Before establishing that final reality, however, the text lays out distinct rights for those who accompany us in this world, distinguishing genuine alliances from false dependencies.
Who counts as a companion in this world?
The Quran mandates fair and generous treatment across a wide spectrum of social bonds. It commands believers to worship God alone and be good to parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, travelers, and neighbors both near and far (4:36). Classical scholars examined how a "companion" fits into this hierarchy of worldly care. Commenting on the scriptural phrase for the companion by one's side, al-Tabari notes (Jami al-bayan, 8/345) that the term broadly encompasses anyone who physically accompanies a person. Yet, scholars carefully distinguish this general companionship from the heavier, more demanding rights of a neighbor. As al-Tarifi explains (Al-Tafsir wal-Bayan, 2/840), a neighbor inevitably witnesses a person's private life and family matters, granting them greater rights than a companion, who is merely a temporary associate.
What determines eternal companionship?
Ultimately, earthly bonds give way to fixed categories in the Hereafter. The text frequently refers to people as the permanent companions or inhabitants (ashab) of either Heaven or Hell. Those who believe and perform good deeds are declared the inhabitants of the Garden, where they will remain (2:82). Conversely, those who disbelieve, reject the truth, and deny God's messages are destined to inhabit the blazing Fire (5:10, 5:86). Wealth and lineage offer no leverage against this division; neither possessions nor children will shield those who reject faith from becoming permanent companions in the Fire (3:116). The severity of this fate is invoked in scripture when a speaker declares he would rather his attacker bear the burden of both their sins and become an inhabitant of the Fire, as that is the exact reward for evildoers (5:29).
Which actions seal this fate?
Specific earthly choices bind individuals to a severe eternal companionship. Beyond general disbelief or being surrounded entirely by one's sins (2:81), the Quran identifies particular transgressions that guarantee this outcome. One is the consumption of usury. Those who falsely claim that trade and usury are the same, and return to usury after receiving a warning, will rise on the Day of Resurrection like someone tormented by Satan’s touch, returning to the Fire to remain (2:275). Similarly, revoking one's faith under the pressure of persecution leads to nullified deeds in this world and the next (2:217). The text also warns against repeating the historical disobedience of those who broke the Sabbath, using them as a cautionary example of those whom God rejected and stripped of direction (4:47).
The most destructive companionships are formed with false deities. Exegetes like Qatada and Muqatil identify the "wretched companion" mentioned in scripture as the idol or false god a person chooses to revere (Mawsuat al-Tafsir al-Mathur, 15/43). These false allies actively pull their followers away from safety, taking them from the light into the depths of darkness until they are inhabitants of the Fire (2:257). True sanctuary lies only with God, the ally of those who believe, who brings them out of the depths of darkness and into the light.

those who disbelieve and deny Our messages shall be the inhabitants of the Fire, and there they will remain.’
Truly those who do evil and are surrounded by their sins will be the inhabitants of the Fire, there to remain,
while those who believe and do good deeds will be the inhabitants of the Garden, there to remain.
They ask you [Prophet] about fighting in the prohibited month. Say, ‘Fighting in that month is a great offence, but to bar others from God’s path, to disbelieve in Him, prevent access to the Sacred Mosque, and expel its people, are still greater offences in God’s eyes: persecution is worse than killing.’ They will not stop fighting you [believers] until they make you revoke your faith, if they can. If any of you revoke your faith and die as disbelievers, your deeds will come to nothing in this world and the Hereafter, and you will be inhabitants of the Fire, there to remain.
God is the ally of those who believe: He brings them out of the depths of darkness and into the light. As for the disbelievers, their allies are false gods who take them from the light into the depths of darkness, they are the inhabitants of the Fire, and there they will remain.
But those who take usury will rise up on the Day of Resurrection like someone tormented by Satan’s touch. That is because they say, ‘Trade and usury are the same,’ but God has allowed trade and forbidden usury. Whoever, on receiving God’s warning, stops taking usury may keep his past gains- God will be his judge- but whoever goes back to usury will be an inhabitant of the Fire, there to remain.
As for those who disbelieve, neither their possessions nor their children will help them against God- they will be companions in the Fire, there to remain-
Worship God; join nothing with Him. Be good to your parents, to relatives, to orphans, to the needy, to neighbours near and far, to travellers in need, and to your slaves. God does not like arrogant, boastful people,
People of the Book, believe in what We have sent down to confirm what you already have before We wipe out [your sense of ] direction, turning you back, or reject you, as We rejected those who broke the Sabbath: God’s will is always done.
those who reject faith and deny Our revelations will inhabit the blazing Fire.
and I would rather you were burdened with my sins as well as yours and became an inhabitant of the Fire: such is the evildoers’ reward.’
Those who reject the truth and deny Our messages will be the inhabitants of Hellfire.
Say, ‘Instead of God, are we to call on what neither profits nor harms us? [Are we to] turn on our heels after God has guided us, like someone bewildered, having been tempted by devils into a desert ravine, though his companions call him to guidance [saying], “Come to us”?’ Say, ‘God’s guidance is the true guidance. We are commanded to devote ourselves to the Lord of the Worlds,
But those who reject Our revelations and arrogantly scorn them are the people of the Fire and there they will remain.
But those who believe and do good deeds- and We do not burden any soul with more than it can bear- are the people of the Garden and there they will remain.
The people of the Garden will cry out to the people of the Fire, ‘We have found what our Lord promised us to be true. Have you found what your Lord promised you to be true?’ and they will answer, ‘Yes’. A voice will proclaim from their midst, ‘God’s rejection [hangs] over the evildoers:
and when their glance falls upon the people of the Fire, they will say, ‘Our Lord, do not let us join the evildoers!’-
and the people of the heights will call out to certain men they recognize by their marks, ‘What use were your great numbers and your false pride?
The people of the Fire will call to the people of Paradise, ‘Give us some water, or any of the sustenance God has granted you!’ and they will reply, ‘God has forbidden both to the disbelievers-
Has it not occurred to them that their companion is not mad but is giving clear warning?
Even if you do not help the Prophet, God helped him when the disbelievers drove him out: when the two of them were in the cave, he [Muhammad] said to his companion, ‘Do not worry, God is with us,’ and God sent His calm down to him, aided him with forces invisible to you, and brought down the disbelievers’ plan. God’s plan is higher: God is almighty and wise.
It is not fitting for the Prophet and the believers to ask forgiveness for the idolaters- even if they are related to them- after having been shown that they are the inhabitants of the Blaze:
Those who did well will have the best reward and more besides. Neither darkness nor shame will cover their faces: these are the companions in Paradise, and there they will remain.
As for those who did evil, each evil deed will be requited by its equal and humiliation will cover them- no one will protect them against God- as though their faces were covered with veils cut from the darkness of the night. These are the inmates of the Fire, and there they shall remain.
But those who believed, did good deeds, and humbled themselves before their Lord will be companions in Paradise and there they will stay.
Fellow prisoners, would many diverse gods be better than God the One, the All Powerful? [No indeed!]
Fellow prisoners, one of you will serve his master with wine; the other will be crucified and the birds will peck at his head. That is the end of the matter on which you asked my opinion.’
If anything can amaze you [Prophet], then you should surely be amazed at their asking, ‘What? When we become dust, shall we be created anew?’ These are the ones who deny their Lord, who will wear iron collars around their necks and be the inhabitants of the Fire, there to remain.
[Prophet], do you find the Companions in the Cave and al-Raqim so wondrous, among all Our other signs?
and so he had abundant fruit. One day, while talking to his friend, he said, ‘I have more wealth and a larger following than you.’
His companion retorted, ‘Have you no faith in Him who created you from dust, from a small drop of fluid, then shaped you into a man?
Moses said, ‘From now on, if I query anything you do, banish me from your company- you have put up with enough from me.’
[Prophet], say, ‘We are all waiting, so you carry on waiting: you will come to learn who has followed the even path, and been rightly guided.’
Midian. Moses too was called a liar. I gave the disbelievers time, but in the end I punished them. How I condemned them!
but those who strive to oppose Our messages and try in vain to defeat Us are destined for the Blaze.
But the companions in the Garden will have a better home on that Day, and a fairer place to rest.
as We did for the people of Ad, Thamud, and al-Rass, and many generations in between.
and as soon as the two sides came within sight of one another, Moses’ followers said, ‘We shall definitely be caught.’
The forest-dwellers, too, called the messengers liars.
Say [Prophet], ‘I advise you to do one thing only: stand before God, in pairs or singly, and think: there is no sign of madness in your companion [the Prophet]- he is only warning you before severe suffering arrives.’
The people of Paradise today are happily occupied-
Thamud, the people of Lot, and the Forest-Dwellers each formed opposition [against theirs].
When man suffers some affliction, he prays to his Lord and turns to Him, but once he has been granted a favour from God, he forgets the One he had been praying to and sets up rivals to God, to make others stray from His path. Say, ‘Enjoy your ingratitude for a little while: you will be one of the inhabitants of the Fire.’
In this way your Lord’s sentence was passed against the disbelievers that they would be the inhabitants of the Fire.
There is no doubt that what you call me to serve is not fit to be invoked either in this world or the Hereafter: our return is to God alone, and it will be the rebels who will inhabit the Fire.
We assign an evil one as a comrade for whoever turns away from the revelations of the Lord of Mercy:
evil ones bar people from the right path, even though they may think they are well guided.
When such a person comes to Us, he will say [to his comrade], ‘If only you had been as far away from me as east is from west. What an evil comrade!’
they are the people of Paradise, there to remain as a reward for what they were doing.
We accept from such people the best of what they do and We overlook their bad deeds. They will be among the people of Paradise- the true promise that has been given to them.
