16 verses
Across 16 verses, the scriptural coordinates of the west (al-gharb) map the limits of human dominion and the absolute sovereignty of God over physical space. Rather than functioning simply as geographical markers, the western and eastern horizons are invoked to strip away superficial attachments to ritual direction, to silence kings who claim divine power, and to illustrate the perfect equilibrium of divine light.
Why does God say the West belongs to Him?
When Moses confronted Pharaoh, he identified God bluntly as the "Lord of the East and West and everything between them" (26:28). This supreme ownership undercuts human obsession with specific physical orientations. When early Muslims faced ridicule for a change in their prayer direction, the response dismantled the assumption that piety is a matter of geography: "East and West belong to God" (2:142). Physical orientation is secondary to the reality that "wherever you turn, there is His Face" (2:115). True goodness, the text emphasizes, does not consist in merely turning your face toward the east or west; rather, it is proven by genuine belief, distributing cherished wealth to orphans and travelers, liberating those in bondage, and remaining steadfast in times of danger (2:177).
How is the West used as a proof of divine power?
The fixed celestial mechanics of the setting sun serve as an unanswerable argument against human arrogance. When a ruler given worldly power disputed with Abraham, claiming that he too could give life and death, Abraham bypassed a philosophical debate and pointed to the heavens. He stated that God brings the sun from the east, and commanded the tyrant: "so bring it from the west" (2:258). The disbeliever was instantly dumbfounded by his inability to alter the cosmic order. God’s control over these expanses extends to earthly inheritance as well; after the Children of Israel endured oppression with patience, God fulfilled His promise by making them succeed to "both the east and the west of the land that We had blessed," systematically destroying the monuments Pharaoh and his people had built (7:137).
What is the tree neither of the east nor west?
The most famous metaphorical use of these directions appears in the Verse of Light, where God’s light is likened to a brilliant lamp fueled by a blessed olive tree that is "from neither east nor west" (24:35). Classical exegetes explain this phrasing as a description of maximum illumination through perfect placement. As al-Naysaburi notes (Ijaz al-Bayan, 2/ 602), this signifies a tree centrally located rather than restricted to one horizon, meaning it receives optimal sunlight from all sides without being overshadowed. Sheltered from being exclusively eastern or western, it yields an oil so luminous and pure that it "almost gives light even when no fire touches it" (24:35).
The fixed directions of the earth organize localized human existence, but they cannot encompass or limit the divine presence. Moses commanded his oppressors to use their reason when considering the "Lord of the East and West and everything between them" (26:28), pointing to an authority that governs the horizon itself. While earthly rulers may claim absolute power, they remain trapped under a sky where they cannot pull the sun from the west, bound entirely to a physical reality where "wherever you turn, there is His Face" (2:115).

All 16 verses, in mushaf order.
The East and the West belong to God: wherever you turn, there is His Face. God is all pervading and all knowing.
The foolish people will say, ‘What has turned them away from the prayer direction they used to face?’ Say, ‘East and West belong to God. He guides whoever He will to the right way.’
Goodness does not consist in turning your face towards East or West. The truly good are those who believe in God and the Last Day, in the angels, the Scripture, and the prophets; who give away some of their wealth, however much they cherish it, to their relatives, to orphans, the needy, travellers and beggars, and to liberate those in bondage; those who keep up the prayer and pay the prescribed alms; who keep pledges whenever they make them; who are steadfast in misfortune, adversity, and times of danger. These are the ones who are true, and it is they who are aware of God.
[Prophet], have you not thought about the man who disputed with Abraham about his Lord, because God had given him power to rule? When Abraham said, ‘It is my Lord who gives life and death,’ he said, ‘I too give life and death.’ So Abraham said, ‘God brings the sun from the east; so bring it from the west.’ The disbeliever was dumbfounded: God does not guide those who do evil.
and We made those who had been oppressed succeed to both the east and the west of the land that We had blessed. Your Lord’s good promise to the Children of Israel was fulfilled, because of their patience, and We destroyed what Pharaoh and his people were making and what they were building.
Mention in the Quran the story of Mary. She withdrew from her family to a place to the east
God is the Light of the heavens and earth. His Light is like this: there is a niche, and in it a lamp, the lamp inside a glass, a glass like a glittering star, fuelled from a blessed olive tree from neither east nor west, whose oil almost gives light even when no fire touches it- light upon light- God guides whoever He will to his Light; God draws such comparisons for people; God has full knowledge of everything-
Moses continued, ‘Lord of the East and West and everything between them. If you would only use your reason!’
Pharaoh and his people pursued them at sunrise,
Lord of the heavens and earth and everything between them, Lord of every sunrise.
We assign an evil one as a comrade for whoever turns away from the revelations of the Lord of Mercy:
evil ones bar people from the right path, even though they may think they are well guided.
When such a person comes to Us, he will say [to his comrade], ‘If only you had been as far away from me as east is from west. What an evil comrade!’
He is Lord of the two risings and Lord of the two settings.
and, by the Lord of every sunrise and sunset, We have the power
He is Lord of the east and west, there is no god but Him, so take Him as your Protector,
