Unlettered

5 verses

Across its five occurrences, the Quran uses the concept of being "unlettered" (الأمي) to distinguish between populations possessing prior scriptures and those who do not, before transforming the term into a definitive title for the Messenger himself. As al-Wahidi notes (Al-Tafsir al-Basit, 9/396), the scholarly consensus defines this unlettered prophet as one who neither writes nor reads. This condition frames the transmission of revelation, contrasting a lack of formal textual training with the vast religious responsibilities placed upon him.

Who are the unlettered populations? The Quran first applies the concept to groups lacking direct scriptural knowledge. In one context, it describes individuals among the earlier religious communities who are technically uneducated in their own texts. These people "know the Scripture only through wish-ful thinking" and ultimately "rely on guesswork" instead of reading actual revelation (2:78). More broadly, the term denotes entire communities outside the lineage of biblical revelation—the gentiles. The Quran instructs the Prophet to draw a clear line in his debates by posing a direct question: "Ask those who were given the Scripture, as well as those without one, ‘Do you too devote yourselves to Him alone?’" (3:20). If they do, they find guidance; if not, the Prophet's only duty is to convey the message.

This distinction between the scripturally literate and the unlettered sometimes bred severe prejudice. The text records that certain individuals among the People of the Book were trustworthy with a heap of gold, yet others would eagerly cheat the unlettered Arabs of a single dinar unless kept under constant watch. They justified their theft by claiming, "We are under no obligation towards the gentiles" (3:75). The Quran explicitly condemns this economic discrimination, declaring that they consciously "tell a lie against God" when they claim divine sanction for cheating those without a scripture.

How is the unlettered Prophet described? Against this backdrop of scriptural absence, the Quran introduces "the unlettered prophet" as a specific, anticipated figure. He is not unknown to those who read prior texts; rather, he is the messenger "they find described in the Torah that is with them, and in the Gospel" (7:157). Abu Bakr al-Jaza'iri points out (Aysar al-Tafasir, 1/652) that this unlettered prophet arrived precisely to fulfill the glad tidings brought by earlier messengers like Jesus.

His illiteracy does not limit his legislative or moral authority. The text establishes him as the one who commands right, forbids wrong, makes good things lawful, and prohibits the bad (7:157). Far from bringing a harsh framework, his mission is uniquely liberating for those weighed down by earlier religious legalism: he "relieves them of their burdens, and the iron collars that were on them" (7:157).

The designation thus transforms from a marker of historical absence into a definitive proof of divine origin. The title remains his eternal identifier; as Muqatil records regarding the gatherings of the hereafter (Tafsir Muqatil bin Sulayman, 4/635), an angel will specifically call out, "Where is the unlettered prophet?" During his earthly mission, he is commanded to announce his role to all mankind, identifying himself as the one sent by the God who gives life and death, "the unlettered prophet who believes in God and His words" (7:158). The ultimate success of his followers relies not on their prior textual lineage, but on whether they believe him, honour and help him, and follow the light which has been sent down with him (7:157).

2:78 Al-Baqarah

Some of them are uneducated, and know the Scripture only through wish-ful thinking. They rely on guesswork.

3:20 Ali 'Imran

if they argue with you [Prophet], say, ‘I have devoted myself to God alone and so have my followers.’ Ask those who were given the Scripture, as well as those without one, ‘Do you too devote yourselves to Him alone?’ If they do, they will be guided, but if they turn away, your only duty is to convey the message. God is aware of His servants.

3:75 Ali 'Imran

There are People of the Book who, if you [Prophet] entrust them with a heap of gold, will return it to you intact, but there are others of them who, if you entrust them with a single dinar, will not return it to you unless you keep standing over them, because they say, ‘We are under no obligation towards the gentiles.’ They tell a lie against God and they know it.

7:157 Al-A'raf

who follow the Messenger- the unlettered prophet they find described in the Torah that is with them, and in the Gospel- who commands them to do right and forbids them to do wrong, who makes good things lawful to them and bad things unlawful, and relieves them of their burdens, and the iron collars that were on them. So it is those who believe him, honour and help him, and who follow the light which has been sent down with him, who will succeed.’

7:158 Al-A'raf

Say [Muhammad], ‘People, I am the Messenger of God to you all, from Him who has control over the heavens and the earth. There is no God but Him; He gives life and death, so believe in God and His Messenger, the unlettered prophet who believes in God and His words, and follow him so that you may find guidance.’
