God created the heavens and earth in six days, placing the sun, the moon, and the stars in positions entirely subservient to His command (7:54). The Almighty structured the cosmos by forming seven distinct heavens over two days, assigning a specific order and function to each layer. Above the earth, the nearest celestial sphere is uniquely equipped with visible, illuminated bodies, a deliberate installation by the Almighty, the All Knowing (41:12). In this framework, all celestial bodies operate under strict divine administration where both creation and ongoing command belong to Him alone.

How does the Quran describe the lowest heaven? The text locates the visible stars firmly within the layer closest to earth, describing them simultaneously as a beautification and a security measure. God states directly, "We have adorned the lowest heaven with stars" (37:6), ensuring that the nearest sky remains beautifully illuminated and secure (41:12). This dual function of aesthetics and guarding is a recurring cosmic principle. As Abu Bakr al-Jaza'iri details (Aysar al-Tafasir, 5/395), the lamps placed in the immediate heaven are the very stars and planets visible from earth, functioning to decorate the sky while also acting as projectiles. He explains that angels utilize these stars as missiles to pelt the devils of the jinn, actively securing the celestial borders against any unauthorized listening entities. They stand as active components of divine security, continually guarding the firmament.

Why are stars cited in divine oaths? Certain chapters of the Quran emphasize the physical precision of the universe by swearing by the stars in their various states of motion. God swears "by the sky with its pathways" (51:7) and explicitly "By the star when it sets!" (53:1). These oaths draw immediate attention to the strict trajectories and specific placement of these bodies. Commenting on the Quranic oath regarding the settings of the stars (mawaqi' al-nujum), the early exegete Qatadah notes (Mawsu'at al-Tafsir al-Ma'thur, 21/275) that this phrasing refers specifically to their designated stations and mansions in the sky. Swearing by these precise mansions underscores the exactness of their orbits and the vastness of the space they occupy, lending weight to the divine messages that follow.

How do human observers read the stars? The act of observing the night sky features prominently in the histories of previous nations. The prophet Abraham is recorded watching them during a critical moment of decision: "then he looked up to the stars" (37:88). Al-Naysaburi (Ijaz al-Bayan, 2/701) suggests this physical glance upward coincided with what suddenly arose in his heart regarding the false idols of his people, cementing his intent to destroy them. Al-Naysaburi also notes that early celestial observation was once a true science rooted in prophethood before being historically abrogated. Rulers of later empires continued to seek meaning in the sky; Muhammad Thana' Allah al-Mazhari (Tafsir al-Mazhari, 8/122) records the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius as a diviner who closely watched the stars, claiming to have foreseen the emergence of a new "king of circumcision" through his nightly readings.

Despite the various ways humanity has historically interpreted these bodies, their ultimate Quranic function points back to the rhythm of worship directed at the Creator. As the night passes, the transition of the sky dictates the believers' devotion, with the divine instruction standing to "Glorify Him at night and at the fading of the stars" (52:49).
