Springs

19 verses

Water descending from the clouds completes its cycle by emerging from the soil as gushing springs. The Quran explicitly maps this hydrological reality to demonstrate precise Divine engineering. The text asks humans to consider how God sends water down from the sky and purposefully guides it along hidden pathways to form springs in the earth (39:21). As Muhammad al-Kalbi notes (Mawsu'at al-Tafsir al-Ma'thur, 19/207), the natural springs and wells scattered across the land originate entirely from this controlled heavenly descent. The water is then used to bring forth vegetation of various colors. Rather than treating them as mere geological features, the text positions these flowing waters as an urgent reminder for those who have understanding. They operate simultaneously as essential daily sustenance, a test of human gratitude, and a central feature of ultimate reward.

How do springs represent wealth and false security?

Abundant, continuous water flowing from the ground constitutes the foundation of agricultural wealth and physical safety. Communities are instructed to remain mindful of the Creator who has provided them with everything they know, specifically detailing the grant of livestock, sons, sprawling gardens, and springs (26:132-134). The presence of these waters transforms barren terrain, as God states He placed gardens of date palms and grapes in the earth and actively caused springs of water to gush out of it to sustain them (36:34).

However, constant, effortless access to fresh water frequently lulls prosperous nations into arrogance. Surrounded by fertile estates, populations begin to believe they will be left secure forever in what they possess locally—their gardens and springs (26:146-147). This illusion of absolute permanence fractures when civilizations reject divine guidance. The very resources they anchored their earthly power upon are eventually left entirely behind. When facing punishment, previous nations were made to evacuate their territories, forced to completely abandon their flourishing gardens and their reliable springs (26:57).

When do springs become instruments of judgment?

While typically functioning as a source of life and cultivation, springs also act as obedient instruments of overwhelming physical force. During the cataclysm of the Flood, the earth did not simply absorb the rain falling upon it. Instead, God burst the earth open with gushing springs, causing the subterranean waters to violently rise and meet the torrential waters falling from the sky for a precisely preordained purpose (54:12). The ground itself was commanded to open and drown the disbelievers.

Despite this recorded history of geological forces overwhelming humanity, later skeptics treated the sudden eruption of water as a casual demand for proof. The opponents of the Prophet Muhammad challenged his authority directly, stating they would wholly withhold their belief until he could force a spring to gush out of the ground specifically for them (17:90). They demanded a localized, customized display of the very power that had previously reshaped the earth in severe judgment.

All worldly vegetation sustained by earthly water inevitably withers, turns yellow before human eyes, and crumbles to dust by direct divine command (39:21). The permanence humans desperately seek in their agricultural estates is only realized in the next life. The righteous are granted an eternal, unbreakable residence in Gardens with springs (15:45). In that realm, the water never dries, nor does it ever turn into an instrument of destruction, but provides endless comfort as a pure drink is continuously passed round among them from a flowing spring (37:45).

Have you not considered that God sends water down from the sky, guides it along to form springs in the earth, and then, with it, brings forth vegetation of various colours, which later withers, turns yellow before your eyes, and is crumbled to dust at His command? There is truly a reminder in this for those who have understanding.
