Rather than moving haphazardly, the sun and the moon follow strictly calculated courses, kept steady on paths designed by the Almighty, the All Knowing (55:5, 6:96). God, who raised up the heavens with no visible supports before establishing Himself on the throne, subjected these immense bodies to pursue their specific routes (13:2). To set this celestial system in motion, He created the heavens and earth for a true purpose, wrapping the night around the day and the day around the night in a continuous, overlapping cycle (39:5).
Do the sun and moon have their own orbits? The physical movement of these bodies is defined by precise boundaries and individual trajectories. God states that He created both the night and the day, as well as the sun and the moon, describing each as floating in its orbit (21:33). The sun runs a determined course that was explicitly laid down for it (36:38). Because these paths are subjected to a precise measure, they are perfectly maintained so that the bodies do not collide or disrupt one another's cycles. The sun cannot overtake the moon, nor can the night outrun the day, as each remains securely floating within its assigned orbit (36:40, 6:96). God keeps both the sun and the moon steady on their paths, making them directly useful to humanity alongside the alternating night and day (14:33).
What is the purpose of their phases and movements? These celestial cycles were not established arbitrarily; they carry distinct, practical functions. God made the sun a shining radiance and the moon a light, deliberately determining changing phases for the moon (10:5). As a month progresses, the moon passes through these determined phases until its final stage, where it visually thins and curves to become like an old date-stalk (36:39). By observing this precise progression, people are able to track the number of years and reliably calculate time (10:5). God makes the night a time for rest and causes the dawn to break, integrating human life into this rhythm (6:96). None of this was created without a true purpose, and God explains these physical phenomena as signs to those who understand (10:5).
Are the solar and lunar orbits permanent? While their paths are steady and highly calculated, the movement of the sun and moon is finite. Multiple verses emphasize that God has subjected them to run their courses only for an "appointed time" or a "stated term" (13:2, 31:29). The continuous process where He causes the night to merge into the day, and the day to merge into the night, operates under this same temporary subjection (31:29). The absolute control over this vast, timed system belongs solely to God, contrasting sharply with false deities. Those invoked besides Him do not possess the power to control even the thin skin of a date stone (35:13).
He is truly the Mighty, the Forgiving, remaining fully aware of everything people do beneath the skies He raised (39:5, 31:29). By regulating all things and keeping the sun and moon on their courses until their appointed term ends, God makes His revelations clear so that you may be certain of meeting your Lord (13:2).

فَالِقُ ٱلْإِصْبَاحِ وَجَعَلَ ٱلَّيْلَ سَكَنًا وَٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ حُسْبَانًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ تَقْدِيرُ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْعَلِيمِ
He makes the dawn break; He makes the night for rest; and He made the sun and the moon to a precise measure. That is the design of the Almighty, the All Knowing.
هُوَ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ ٱلشَّمْسَ ضِيَآءً وَٱلْقَمَرَ نُورًا وَقَدَّرَهُۥ مَنَازِلَ لِتَعْلَمُوا۟ عَدَدَ ٱلسِّنِينَ وَٱلْحِسَابَ ۚ مَا خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ ذَٰلِكَ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ يُفَصِّلُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْلَمُونَ
It is He who made the sun a shining radiance and the moon a light, determining phases for it so that you might know the number of years and how to calculate time. God did not create all these without a true purpose; He explains His signs to those who understand.
ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى رَفَعَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ بِغَيْرِ عَمَدٍ تَرَوْنَهَا ۖ ثُمَّ ٱسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى ٱلْعَرْشِ ۖ وَسَخَّرَ ٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ ۖ كُلٌّ يَجْرِى لِأَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى ۚ يُدَبِّرُ ٱلْأَمْرَ يُفَصِّلُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ لَعَلَّكُم بِلِقَآءِ رَبِّكُمْ تُوقِنُونَ
It is God who raised up the heavens with no visible supports and then established Himself on the throne; He has subjected the sun and the moon each to pursue its course for an appointed time; He regulates all things, and makes the revelations clear so that you may be certain of meeting your Lord;
وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ ٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ دَآئِبَيْنِ ۖ وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ ٱلَّيْلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ
He has made the sun and the moon useful to you, steady on their paths; He has made the night and day useful to you
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلَّيْلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ وَٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ ۖ كُلٌّ فِى فَلَكٍ يَسْبَحُونَ
It is He who created night and day, the sun and the moon, each floating in its orbit.
أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُولِجُ ٱلَّيْلَ فِى ٱلنَّهَارِ وَيُولِجُ ٱلنَّهَارَ فِى ٱلَّيْلِ وَسَخَّرَ ٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ كُلٌّ يَجْرِىٓ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ
[Prophet], do you not see that God causes the night to merge into day and the day to merge into night; that He has subjected the sun and the moon, each to run its course for a stated term; that He is aware of everything you [people] do?
يُولِجُ ٱلَّيْلَ فِى ٱلنَّهَارِ وَيُولِجُ ٱلنَّهَارَ فِى ٱلَّيْلِ وَسَخَّرَ ٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ كُلٌّ يَجْرِى لِأَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى ۚ ذَٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمْ لَهُ ٱلْمُلْكُ ۚ وَٱلَّذِينَ تَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦ مَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِن قِطْمِيرٍ
He makes the night merge into the day and the day into the night; He has subjected the sun and the moon- each runs for an appointed term. Such is God your Lord: all control belongs to Him. Those you invoke beside Him do not even control the skin of a date stone;
وَٱلشَّمْسُ تَجْرِى لِمُسْتَقَرٍّ لَّهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ تَقْدِيرُ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْعَلِيمِ
The sun, too, runs its determined course laid down for it by the Almighty, the All Knowing.
وَٱلْقَمَرَ قَدَّرْنَـٰهُ مَنَازِلَ حَتَّىٰ عَادَ كَٱلْعُرْجُونِ ٱلْقَدِيمِ
We have determined phases for the moon until finally it becomes like an old date-stalk.
لَا ٱلشَّمْسُ يَنۢبَغِى لَهَآ أَن تُدْرِكَ ٱلْقَمَرَ وَلَا ٱلَّيْلُ سَابِقُ ٱلنَّهَارِ ۚ وَكُلٌّ فِى فَلَكٍ يَسْبَحُونَ
The sun cannot overtake the moon, nor can the night outrun the day: each floats in [its own] orbit.
خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖ يُكَوِّرُ ٱلَّيْلَ عَلَى ٱلنَّهَارِ وَيُكَوِّرُ ٱلنَّهَارَ عَلَى ٱلَّيْلِ ۖ وَسَخَّرَ ٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ ۖ كُلٌّ يَجْرِى لِأَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى ۗ أَلَا هُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْغَفَّـٰرُ
He created the heavens and earth for a true purpose; He wraps the night around the day and the day around the night; He has subjected the sun and moon to run their courses for an appointed time; He is truly the Mighty, the Forgiving.
ٱلشَّمْسُ وَٱلْقَمَرُ بِحُسْبَانٍ
The sun and the moon follow their calculated courses;
