Evil

الشر

22 verses

Human nature carries an inherent friction, an acknowledgment that "man’s very soul incites him to evil unless my Lord shows mercy" (12:53). The Quran treats wrongdoing not as a detached cosmic force, but as an active choice rooted in internal desires and external seductions. While God explicitly commands justice, doing good, and generosity toward relatives, He strictly forbids the shameful, the blameworthy, and the oppressive (16:90). The text draws a firm line between the source of our blessings and the origin of our failures, framing corruption as something humans either passively succumb to or actively choose to propagate.

Where does it originate? When a person commits a wrong or experiences its immediate fallout, accountability traces back to the individual: "anything good that happens to you is from God; anything bad is from yourself" (4:79). This internal vulnerability is constantly exploited by Satan, who openly swore to claim his "due share" of humanity (4:118). His method relies on a persistent psychological campaign rather than physical coercion. He commands people to act indecently and to say things about God that they do not actually know (2:169).

Satan’s strategies are highly specific: he vows to mislead, to incite vain desires, to command people to slit the ears of cattle, and to urge them to tamper with God’s creation (4:119). This seduction extends into the unseen realm, where jinn actively mislead humans. On the Day of Gathering, these adherents among mankind will confess that they mutually profited from one another, engaging in exploitative relationships until reaching their decreed end (6:128). Choosing Satan as a patron over God guarantees utter ruin (4:119).

How must believers respond? Understanding corruption serves as a defense mechanism rather than an invitation. As al-Zamakhshari notes (Tafsir al-Kashshaf, 1/172), recognizing wrongdoing has a precise function: one learns of evil not for its own sake, but to protect oneself against it. This protection is fundamentally communal. Believers are instructed to help one another do what is right and good, while specifically forbidden from assisting each other in sin and hostility (5:2). The text emphasizes that even past grievances cannot justify crossing ethical boundaries; hatred for people who previously barred believers from the Sacred Mosque must never induce them to break the law (5:2).

Speech itself carries immediate weight in this balance. Whoever advocates for a bad cause will share in its burden, just as one who speaks for a good cause shares in its benefits, because God controls everything (4:85).

What is the final cost? The Quran establishes a strict asymmetry in how actions are weighed, heavily favoring mercy. A good deed is credited to a person ten times over, but a bad deed is repaid only with its exact equivalent, ensuring no soul is wronged (6:160). There is no disproportionate vengeance, only absolute parity.

Yet the reality of that equivalent repayment is severe for those who dedicate themselves to transgression. For those who did wrong, each evil deed receives its equal requital, and they will find no protector against God. In the Fire, the humiliation of their choices will physically manifest upon them, as though their faces were covered with veils cut from the darkness of the night (10:27).

2:169 Al-Baqarah

He always commands you to do what is evil and indecent, and to say things about God that you do not really know.

4:79 An-Nisa

Anything good that happens to you [Prophet] is from God; anything bad is [ultimately] from yourself. We have sent you as a messenger to people; God is sufficient witness.

4:85 An-Nisa

Whoever speaks for a good cause will share in its benefits and whoever speaks for a bad cause will share in its burden: God controls everything.

4:117 An-Nisa

In His place the idolaters invoke only females, and Satan, the rebel

4:118 An-Nisa

God rejected, who said, ‘I will certainly take my due share of Your servants;

4:119 An-Nisa

I will mislead them and incite vain desires in them; I will command them to slit the ears of cattle; I will command them to tamper with God’s creation.’ Whoever chooses Satan as a patron instead of God is utterly ruined:

5:2 Al-Ma'idah

so, you who believe, do not violate the sanctity of God’s rites, the Sacred Month, the offerings, their garlands, nor those going to the Sacred House to seek the bounty and pleasure of their Lord––but when you have completed the rites of pilgrimage you may hunt. Do not let your hatred for the people who barred you from the Sacred Mosque induce you to break the law: help one another to do what is right and good; do not help one another towards sin and hostility. Be mindful of God, for His punishment is severe.

6:128 Al-An'am

On the day He gathers everyone together [saying], ‘Company of jinn! You have seduced a great many humans,’ their adherents among mankind will say, ‘Lord, we have profited from one another, but now we have reached the appointed time You decreed for us.’ He will say, ‘Your home is the Fire, and there you shall remain’- unless God wills otherwise: [Prophet], your Lord is all wise, all knowing.

6:160 Al-An'am

Whoever has done a good deed will have it ten times to his credit, but whoever has done a bad deed will be repaid only with its equivalent- they will not be wronged.

10:27 Yunus

As for those who did evil, each evil deed will be requited by its equal and humiliation will cover them- no one will protect them against God- as though their faces were covered with veils cut from the darkness of the night. These are the inmates of the Fire, and there they shall remain.

12:53 Yusuf

I do not pretend to be blameless, for man’s very soul incites him to evil unless my Lord shows mercy: He is most forgiving, most merciful.’

16:90 An-Nahl

God commands justice, doing good, and generosity towards relatives and He forbids what is shameful, blameworthy, and oppressive. He teaches you, so that you may take heed.

24:21 An-Nur

Believers, do not follow in Satan’s footsteps- if you do so, he will urge you to indecency and evil. If it were not for God’s bounty and mercy towards you, not one of you would ever have attained purity. God purifies whoever He will: God is all hearing, all seeing.

29:4 Al-'Ankabut

Do the evildoers think they can escape us? How ill they judge!

41:46 Fussilat

Whoever does good does it for his own soul and whoever does evil does it against his own soul: your Lord is never unjust to His creatures.

42:37 Ash-Shuraa

who shun great sins and gross indecencies; who forgive when they are angry;

42:40 Ash-Shuraa

Let harm be requited by an equal harm, though anyone who forgives and puts things right will have his reward from God Himself––He does not like those who do wrong.

42:41 Ash-Shuraa

There is no cause to act against anyone who defends himself after being wronged,

42:42 Ash-Shuraa

but there is cause to act against those who oppress people and transgress in the land against all justice- they will have an agonizing torment-

45:15 Al-Jathiyah

Whoever does good benefits himself, and whoever does evil harms himself: you will all be returned to your Lord.

50:16 Qaf

We created man––We know what his soul whispers to him: We are closer to him than his jugular vein––

99:8 Az-Zalzalah

but whoever has done an atom’s-weight of evil will see that.
