Before human beings are called to submit, the Quran establishes that every entity in the heavens and the earth already exists in a state of devout obedience to God's will (2:116, 30:26). The universe itself is fundamentally compliant. The Quranic concept of human devotion—anchored by the Arabic term qunut—extends this cosmic reality into conscious action. As Bakr bin al-Ala notes (Ahkam al-Quran, 1/265), the root of this word means a person continuously sustains an action in obedience to God. Rather than a singular deed, it is an enduring posture, marking out those who state that their deeds belong solely to them and that they devote themselves entirely to their Lord (2:139).
How does obedience shape daily worship?
The Quran tightly binds the concept of devotion to the physical and spiritual practice of daily prayer. Believers are instructed to take care of their prayers, praying in the best way, and to stand before God in devotion (2:238). Classical commentators recognized this link to physical worship; al-Kiya al-Harrasi (Ahkam al-Quran, 1/215) points out that qunut can refer specifically to the act of prolonged standing or maintaining a reverent silence in prayer.
This outward standing mirrors a demanding internal spiritual state. The "truly devout" are grouped with those who possess distinct habits: they are steadfast, truthful, give their wealth in God's cause, and isolate time to pray before dawn for forgiveness (3:17). The physical posture of obedience is commanded directly to individuals, instructing believers to prostrate and bow down alongside others who pray (3:43).
What are the traits and rewards of the obedient?
Devout obedience is expected equally from men and women, forming the bedrock of a believing household. The Quran details this parity by listing "obedient men and women" alongside those who are believing, truthful, steadfast, humble, charitable, fasting, chaste, and who remember God often—promising them forgiveness and a rich reward (33:35). In the context of marriage, righteous wives are explicitly described as devout, entrusted to guard what God would have them guard in their husbands’ absence (4:34).
The requirement for obedience scales with a person's spiritual responsibility. For the wives of the Prophet, God promises a double reward and a generous provision on the condition that they remain obedient to God and His Messenger while doing good deeds (33:31). When detailing the qualities of an ideal spouse, the Quran groups being "devoted to God" with being true believers, repentant, given to worship, and fasting (66:5). According to al-Qurazi (Mawsu'at al-Tafsir al-Ma'thur, 4/350), virtually every mention of qunut in the text points fundamentally to this encompassing obedience, tying everyday actions back to the divine will.
The Quran crystallizes this standard of unbroken obedience in the historical figure of Mary, daughter of Imran. Angels address her directly, commanding her to be devout to her Lord, to prostrate, and to bow down in worship (3:43). Her defining legacy is not merely the miraculous birth she was chosen for, but her absolute submission. She guarded her chastity, accepted the truth of her Lord’s words and Scriptures, and remains permanently recorded as one who was truly devout (66:12).

وَقَالُوا۟ ٱتَّخَذَ ٱللَّهُ وَلَدًا ۗ سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥ ۖ بَل لَّهُۥ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ كُلٌّ لَّهُۥ قَـٰنِتُونَ
They have asserted, ‘God has a child.’ May He be exalted! No! Everything in the heavens and earth belongs to Him, everything devoutly obeys His will.
قُلْ أَتُحَآجُّونَنَا فِى ٱللَّهِ وَهُوَ رَبُّنَا وَرَبُّكُمْ وَلَنَآ أَعْمَـٰلُنَا وَلَكُمْ أَعْمَـٰلُكُمْ وَنَحْنُ لَهُۥ مُخْلِصُونَ
Say [Prophet] [to the Jews and Christians], ‘How can you argue with us about God when He is our Lord and your Lord? Our deeds belong to us, and yours to you. We devote ourselves entirely to Him.
حَـٰفِظُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلصَّلَوَٰتِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ٱلْوُسْطَىٰ وَقُومُوا۟ لِلَّهِ قَـٰنِتِينَ
Take care to do your prayers, praying in the best way, and stand before God in devotion.
ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ وَٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ وَٱلْقَـٰنِتِينَ وَٱلْمُنفِقِينَ وَٱلْمُسْتَغْفِرِينَ بِٱلْأَسْحَارِ
those who are steadfast, truthful, truly devout, who give [in God’s cause] and pray before dawn for forgiveness.’
يَـٰمَرْيَمُ ٱقْنُتِى لِرَبِّكِ وَٱسْجُدِى وَٱرْكَعِى مَعَ ٱلرَّٰكِعِينَ
Mary, be devout to your Lord, prostrate yourself in worship, bow down with those who pray.’
ٱلرِّجَالُ قَوَّٰمُونَ عَلَى ٱلنِّسَآءِ بِمَا فَضَّلَ ٱللَّهُ بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ وَبِمَآ أَنفَقُوا۟ مِنْ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ ۚ فَٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتُ قَـٰنِتَـٰتٌ حَـٰفِظَـٰتٌ لِّلْغَيْبِ بِمَا حَفِظَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ وَٱلَّـٰتِى تَخَافُونَ نُشُوزَهُنَّ فَعِظُوهُنَّ وَٱهْجُرُوهُنَّ فِى ٱلْمَضَاجِعِ وَٱضْرِبُوهُنَّ ۖ فَإِنْ أَطَعْنَكُمْ فَلَا تَبْغُوا۟ عَلَيْهِنَّ سَبِيلًا ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيًّا كَبِيرًا
Husbands should take good care of their wives, with [the bounties] God has given to some more than others and with what they spend out of their own money. Righteous wives are devout and guard what God would have them guard in their husbands’ absence. If you fear high-handedness from your wives, remind them [of the teachings of God], then ignore them when you go to bed, then hit them.If they obey you, you have no right to act against them: God is most high and great.
وَلَهُۥ مَن فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ كُلٌّ لَّهُۥ قَـٰنِتُونَ
Everyone in the heavens and earth belongs to Him, and all are obedient to Him.
۞ وَمَن يَقْنُتْ مِنكُنَّ لِلَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَتَعْمَلْ صَـٰلِحًا نُّؤْتِهَآ أَجْرَهَا مَرَّتَيْنِ وَأَعْتَدْنَا لَهَا رِزْقًا كَرِيمًا
but if any of you is obedient to God and His Messenger and does good deeds, know that We shall give her a double reward and have prepared a generous provision for her.
إِنَّ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ وَٱلْمُسْلِمَـٰتِ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ وَٱلْقَـٰنِتِينَ وَٱلْقَـٰنِتَـٰتِ وَٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ وَٱلصَّـٰدِقَـٰتِ وَٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ وَٱلصَّـٰبِرَٰتِ وَٱلْخَـٰشِعِينَ وَٱلْخَـٰشِعَـٰتِ وَٱلْمُتَصَدِّقِينَ وَٱلْمُتَصَدِّقَـٰتِ وَٱلصَّـٰٓئِمِينَ وَٱلصَّـٰٓئِمَـٰتِ وَٱلْحَـٰفِظِينَ فُرُوجَهُمْ وَٱلْحَـٰفِظَـٰتِ وَٱلذَّٰكِرِينَ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرًا وَٱلذَّٰكِرَٰتِ أَعَدَّ ٱللَّهُ لَهُم مَّغْفِرَةً وَأَجْرًا عَظِيمًا
For men and women who are devoted to God- believing men and women, obedient men and women, truthful men and women, steadfast men and women, humble men and women, charitable men and women, fasting men and women, chaste men and women, men and women who remember God often- God has prepared forgiveness and a rich reward.
عَسَىٰ رَبُّهُۥٓ إِن طَلَّقَكُنَّ أَن يُبْدِلَهُۥٓ أَزْوَٰجًا خَيْرًا مِّنكُنَّ مُسْلِمَـٰتٍ مُّؤْمِنَـٰتٍ قَـٰنِتَـٰتٍ تَـٰٓئِبَـٰتٍ عَـٰبِدَٰتٍ سَـٰٓئِحَـٰتٍ ثَيِّبَـٰتٍ وَأَبْكَارًا
His Lord may well replace you with better wives if the Prophet decides to divorce any of you: wives who are devoted to God, true believers, devout, who turn to Him in repentance and worship Him, given to fasting, whether previously married or virgins.
وَمَرْيَمَ ٱبْنَتَ عِمْرَٰنَ ٱلَّتِىٓ أَحْصَنَتْ فَرْجَهَا فَنَفَخْنَا فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِنَا وَصَدَّقَتْ بِكَلِمَـٰتِ رَبِّهَا وَكُتُبِهِۦ وَكَانَتْ مِنَ ٱلْقَـٰنِتِينَ
and Mary, daughter of Imran. She guarded her chastity, so We breathed into her from Our spirit. She accepted the truth of her Lord’s words and Scriptures: she was truly devout.
