plagues

5 verses

When Pharaoh and his people refused to release the Children of Israel, their arrogance was met with a sequence of inescapable physical realities: a flood, swarms of locusts, infestations of lice, frogs, and water turned to blood (7:133). These are not described as random ecological disasters, but as "clear signs" deliberately let loose upon a wicked people. The Quran frames these plagues as direct interventions meant to disrupt human tyranny, using the natural world to challenge those who believed themselves untouchable.

What plagues did God send as signs?

The Quran explicitly lists the succession of afflictions sent to break the resistance of the Egyptian leaders. God let loose a flood, locusts, lice, frogs, and blood (7:133). Each event arrived as a distinct, unmistakable sign. The sequence demonstrates an escalation of disruption—from the ruin of agriculture and infrastructure by water and insects, to the intimate torment of lice and frogs, to the pollution of their life source with blood. Despite the clarity of these signs, the people maintained their arrogance, cementing their status as a wicked populace refusing to yield to divine authority.

How did the afflicted react?

The arrival of each plague triggered a predictable cycle of desperation and false bargaining. Whenever an affliction struck, the people's arrogance shattered temporarily. They would seek out Moses, asking him to pray to his Lord on their behalf (7:134). In these moments of crisis, they acknowledged the validity of God's promise to Moses, proposing a direct trade: if God would relieve the suffering of the plague, they would finally believe him and let the Children of Israel go.

God accepted these terms and lifted the plagues, granting them a fixed period to fulfill their end of the bargain (7:135). This removal of the plague was an opportunity for the people to prove their sincerity. Yet, the relief of physical pain immediately erased their willingness to submit. As soon as the hardship lifted, they broke their agreements, revealing that their appeals to Moses were driven purely by a desire to escape suffering.

How does God test disobedience?

The plagues were severe warnings, but they were not the final destruction. However, the people's repeated betrayal exhausted their given time. Because they explicitly rejected the signs and paid them no heed, divine retribution was exacted: they were drowned in the sea (7:136).

This principle of testing a community through its environment is a recurring mechanism for dealing with disobedience. When a town by the sea fell into transgression, they faced a trial perfectly calibrated to their daily lives. Because they broke the Sabbath, God tested them by altering the behavior of the ocean itself. Their fish were made to surface visibly only on their sacred day of rest, never appearing on regular weekdays (7:163). Whether through the overwhelming terror of locusts and frogs or the quiet, relentless temptation of a Sabbath catch, creation itself shifts to test a people's obedience, separating those who keep their promises from those who are swallowed by the sea.

7:133 Al-A'raf

and so We let loose on them the flood, locusts, lice, frogs, blood- all clear signs. They were arrogant, wicked people.

7:134 Al-A'raf

They would say, whenever a plague struck them, ‘Moses, pray to your Lord for us by virtue of the promise He has made to you: if you relieve us of the plague, we will believe you and let the Children of Israel go with you,’

7:135 Al-A'raf

but when We relieved them of the plague and gave them a fixed period [in which to fulfil their promise]- lo and behold!- they broke it.

7:136 Al-A'raf

And so, because they rejected Our signs and paid them no heed, We exacted retribution from them: We drowned them in the sea

7:163 Al-A'raf

[Prophet], ask them about the town by the sea; how its people broke the Sabbath when their fish surfaced for them only on that day, never on weekdays- We tested them in this way: because of their disobedience-
