The Sustainer of the universe is an entity whom neither slumber nor sleep can ever overtake (2:255). As the Ever Living and the Ever Watchful, He maintains sole ownership over everything existing in the heavens and the earth. There is no other god but Him, and His reality is defined by a complete lack of weariness in preserving the vastness of His creation.
Who holds authority over creation?
God’s dominion is absolute, characterized by an all-encompassing awareness and unyielding power. His throne extends completely over the heavens and the earth, and the immense task of preserving them both does not tire Him (2:255). Within this structure, human and angelic limits are starkly drawn. Created beings cannot comprehend any aspect of His knowledge except that which He explicitly wills them to grasp.
Furthermore, independent mediation does not exist; no one can intercede with Him on behalf of another unless He first grants His explicit leave. He possesses total knowledge of what lies before His creatures and what lies behind them, standing above all as the Most High, the Tremendous (2:255).
How does the Quran address false deities?
Human attempts to assign attributes or partners to God are dismantled as baseless fabrications. When addressing al-Lat, al-Uzza, and the third one, Manat, the text dismisses them as nothing but empty names invented by people and their forefathers (53:19-23). God sent down no authority to validate these figures. Instead of divine mandate, those who follow them rely on mere guesswork and the passing whims of their own souls, willfully ignoring the actual guidance that has reached them from their Lord.
These verses also confront the contradictory logic of those who deny the life to come. These individuals gave the angels female names, assigning daughters to God while desiring sons for themselves—an arrangement the text calls a most unjust distribution (53:21-22, 27). Such human desires hold no weight, as man does not simply get everything he wishes for (53:24). Even the vast multitude of angels residing in heaven possess no inherent influence; their intercession remains entirely useless until God gives His permission to those He wills, and whose words He chooses to accept (53:26).
What separates true belief from outward submission?
Recognizing the true nature of God demands more than verbal affiliation. When the desert Arabs proclaimed, "We have faith," they were instructed by the Prophet to correct their statement to, "We have submitted" (49:14). The text draws a firm line here, noting that true faith had not yet actually entered their hearts.
Genuine believers are defined not by mere claims, but by an unwavering internal conviction combined with physical effort. They are those who have faith in God and His Messenger, deliberately leaving all doubt behind (49:15). This internal certainty manifests externally, as they struggle using both their possessions and their own persons in God’s way. These are the individuals the text identifies as being true.
For those who obey God and His Messenger, there is a direct guarantee that none of their deeds will be diminished (49:14). The ultimate authority over both the present life and the life to come belongs only to God, the most forgiving and most merciful, who knows exactly what is before His creation and what is behind them (53:25, 2:255, 49:14).

God: there is no god but Him, the Ever Living, the Ever Watchful.Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. All that is in the heavens and in the earth belongs to Him. Who is there that can intercede with Him except by His leave? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, but they do not comprehend any of His knowledge except what He wills. His throne extends over the heavens and the earth; it does not weary Him to preserve them both. He is the Most High, the Tremendous.
The desert Arabs say, ‘We have faith.’ [Prophet], tell them, ‘You do not have faith. What you should say instead is, “We have submitted,” for faith has not yet entered your hearts.’ If you obey God and His Messenger, He will not diminish any of your deeds: He is most forgiving and most merciful.
The true believers are the ones who have faith in God and His Messenger and leave all doubt behind, the ones who have struggled with their possessions and their persons in God’s way: they are the ones who are true.
[Disbelievers], consider al-Lat and al-Uzza,
and the third one, Manat––
are you to have the male and He the female?
That would be a most unjust distribution!––
these are nothing but names you have invented yourselves, you and your forefathers. God has sent no authority for them. These people merely follow guesswork and the whims of their souls, even though guidance has come to them from their Lord.
Is man to have everything he wishes for,
when the present life and the life to come belong only to God?
There are many angels in heaven whose intercession will be of no use until God gives permission to those He will, whose words He will accept.
Those who deny the life to come give the angels female names.
They have no knowledge to base this on: they merely follow guesswork. Guesswork is of no value against the Truth.
