35 verses
When Jews and Christians invalidate each other's religious standing, declaring the other has no ground whatsoever to stand on, the text defers the final verdict to the Day of Resurrection (2:113). The revealed verses establish a strict boundary between theological disagreements, which God alone will settle in the Hereafter, and worldly disputes, which human beings are commanded to resolve using scripture. Judgment is framed not as a human invention, but as a sacred trust that demands exact adherence to what has been sent down.
How must believers settle their disputes?
At the core of worldly judgment is absolute equity and the protection of rights. The text explicitly links the act of returning entrusted items to their rightful owners with the command to judge between people with justice (4:58). This standard is directly threatened by corruption, prompting a prohibition against consuming property wrongfully or using it to bribe judges with the deliberate intent of devouring other people's wealth (2:188).
For the early Muslim community, accepting the Prophet’s judgment was a defining mark of faith. True believers are described as those who let him decide all their disputes, finding zero internal resistance to his decisions, and accepting them totally (4:65). The scripture was given to him precisely so he could judge according to what God showed him, accompanied by a strict warning never to act as an advocate for those who betray trust (4:105).
What happens when other communities seek judgment?
The Prophet frequently faced factions who listened eagerly to lies and consumed unlawful things, yet still came to him seeking a verdict (5:42). In these instances, he was given explicit permission to either decline their request—with the assurance that they could not harm him—or to judge between them. The text notes the paradox of these groups seeking his decision when they already possessed the Torah, which contained God’s judgment, only to turn their backs on it (5:43). Some even walked away when asked to accept judgment directly from God's Scripture (3:23).
The obligation to judge by revelation was firmly established before the Quran. The Torah was revealed with guidance and light, serving as the standard by which submitted prophets, rabbis, and scholars judged the Jews (5:44). This previous scripture prescribed exact retaliatory measures—a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, and an equal wound for a wound (5:45). While foregoing these rights out of charity serves as an atonement for a person's bad deeds, the baseline requirement to rule by the text remains absolute. Those who barter away these messages for a small price, or fail to judge according to what God revealed, are categorized as rejecting the teachings and committing a grave wrong (5:44, 5:45).
Who settles unresolvable theological divisions?
While legal and physical disputes require immediate human rulings, the ultimate status of different religious groups is deliberately postponed. God informs Jesus that He will raise him up, purify him from disbelievers, and make his followers superior to those who disbelieved until the Day of Resurrection, when God Himself will judge regarding their differences (3:55).
This deferred judgment also applies to the hypocrites who wait on the sidelines to see who achieves worldly success. If believers win, they claim to have been on their side; if disbelievers gain the upper hand, they claim to have protected them from the believers (4:141). Their true standing is left to the Day of Resurrection, where the final verdict will give the disbelievers no means of overcoming the believers. Until that day, those placed in a position to decide between disputing parties must do so with unyielding fairness, because God loves the just (5:42).

The Jews say, ‘The Christians have no ground whatsoever to stand on,’ and the Christians say, ‘The Jews have no ground whatsoever to stand on,’ though they both read the Scripture, and those who have no knowledge say the same; God will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning their differences.
Do not consume your property wrongfully, nor use it to bribe judges, intending sinfully and knowingly to consume parts of other people’s property.
Have you considered those who were given a share of the Scripture? When they are asked to accept judgement from God’s Scripture, some of them turn their backs and walk away, all because they declare,
God said, ‘Jesus, I will take you back and raise you up to Me: I will purify you of the disbelievers. To the Day of Resurrection I will make those who follow you superior to those who disbelieved. Then you will all return to Me and I will judge between you regarding your differences.
God commands you [people] to return things entrusted to you to their rightful owners, and, if you judge between people, to do so with justice: God’s instructions to you are excellent, for He hears and sees everything.
By your Lord, they will not be true believers until they let you decide between them in all matters of dispute, and find no resistance in their souls to your decisions, accepting them totally-
We have sent down the Scripture to you [Prophet] with the truth so that you can judge between people in accordance with what God has shown you. Do not be an advocate for those who betray trust.
The [hypocrites] wait to see what happens to you and, if God brings you success, they say, ‘Were we not on your side?’ but if the disbelievers have some success, they say to them, ‘Did we not have the upper hand over you, and [yet] protect you from the believers?’ God will judge between you all on the Day of Resurrection, and He will give the disbelievers no means of overcoming the believers.
they listen eagerly to lies and consume what is unlawful. If they come to you [Prophet] for judgement, you can either judge between them, or decline- if you decline, they will not harm you in any way, but if you do judge between them, judge justly: God loves the just-
but why do they come to you for judgement when they have the Torah with God’s judgement, and even then still turn away? These are not believers.
We revealed the Torah with guidance and light, and the prophets, who had submitted to God, judged according to it for the Jews. So did the rabbis and the scholars in accordance with that part of God’s Scripture which they were entrusted to preserve, and to which they were witnesses. So [rabbis and scholars] do not fear people, fear Me; do not barter away My messages for a small price; those who do not judge according to what God has sent down are rejecting [God’s teachings].
In the Torah We prescribed for them a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, an equal wound for a wound: if anyone forgoes this out of charity, it will serve as atonement for his bad deeds. Those who do not judge according to what God has revealed are doing grave wrong.
So let the followers of the Gospel judge according to what God has sent down in it. Those who do not judge according to what God has revealed are lawbreakers.
We sent to you [Muhammad] the Scripture with the truth, confirming the Scriptures that came before it, and with final authority over them: so judge between them according to what God has sent down. Do not follow their whims, which deviate from the truth that has come to you. We have assigned a law and a path to each of you. If God had so willed, He would have made you one community, but He wanted to test you through that which He has given you, so race to do good: you will all return to God and He will make clear to you the matters you differed about.
[Say], ‘Shall I seek any judge other than God, when it is He who has sent down for you [people] the Scripture, clearly explained?’ Those to whom We gave the Scripture know that this [Quran] is revealed by your Lord [Prophet] with the truth, so do not be one of those who doubt.
If some of you believe the message I bring and others do not, then be patient till God judges between us. He is the best of all judges.’
If we were to return to your religion after God has saved us from it, we would be inventing lies about Him: there is no way we could return to it- unless by the will of God our Lord: in His knowledge He comprehends everything. We put our trust in God. Our Lord, expose the truth [and judge] between us and our people, for You are the best judge.’
[Prophet], follow what is being revealed to you, and be steadfast until God gives His judgement, for He is the Best of Judges.
Noah called out to his Lord, saying, ‘My Lord, my son was one of my family, though Your promise is true, and You are the most just of all judges.’
When they lost hope of [persuading] him, they withdrew to confer with each other: the eldest of them said, ‘Do you not remember that your father took a solemn pledge from you in the name of God and before that you failed in your duty with regard to Joseph? I will not leave this land until my father gives me leave or God decides for me- He is the best decider-
Do they not see how We come to [their] land and shrink its borders? God decides- no one can reverse His decision- and He is swift in reckoning.
The Sabbath was made obligatory only for those who differed about it. On the Day of Resurrection your Lord will judge between them as to their differences.
He said,‘My Lord, pass the true judgement.’ And, ‘Our Lord is the Lord of Mercy. We seek His assistance against what you [disbelievers] say.’
On that Day control will belong to God: He will judge between them. Those who believe and do good deeds will be admitted to Gardens of Delight,
On the Day of Resurrection, God will judge between you regarding your differences.
and when they are summoned to God and His Messenger in order for him to judge between them, some of them turn away.
When the true believers are summoned to God and His Messenger in order for him to judge between them, they say, ‘We hear and we obey.’ These are the ones who will prosper:
Say, ‘Our Lord will gather us together, then He will judge justly between us; He alone is the All Knowing Judge.’
When they reached David, he took fright, but they said, ‘Do not be afraid. We are two litigants, one of whom has wronged the other: judge between us fairly- do not be unjust- and guide us to the right path.
‘David, We have given you mastery over the land. Judge fairly between people. Do not follow your desires, lest they divert you from God’s path: those who wander from His path will have a painful torment because they ignore the Day of Reckoning.’
true devotion is due to God alone. [As for] those who choose other protectors beside Him, saying, ‘We only worship them because they bring us nearer to God,’ God Himself will judge between them regarding their differences. God does not guide any ungrateful liar.
Say, ‘God! Creator of the heavens and earth! Knower of all that is hidden and all that is open, You will judge between Your servants regarding their differences.’
God will judge with truth, while those they invoke besides Him will not judge at all. God is the All Hearing, the All Seeing.
You who believe, test the believing women when they come to you as emigrants- God knows best about their faith- and if you are sure of their belief, do not send them back to the disbelievers: they are not lawful wives for them, nor are the disbelievers their lawful husbands. Give the disbelievers whatever bride-gifts they have paid- if you choose to marry them, there is no blame on you once you have paid their bride-gifts- and do not yourselves hold on to marriage ties with disbelieving women. Ask for repayment of the bride-gifts you have paid, and let the disbelievers do the same. This is God’s judgement: He judges between you, God is all knowing and wise.
Is God not the most decisive of judges?
