Alliances

8 verses

When factions look outward for strength, the Quran asks a direct question: "Do those who ally themselves with the disbelievers rather than the believers seek power through them?" (4:139). It answers by stating that, in reality, all power is God’s to give, rendering allegiances based purely on worldly advantage invalid. Loyalty is not determined by bloodline or political convenience, but by shared faith and physical commitment to the community. The text reshapes the boundaries of who protects whom, severing ties that compromise belief while laying down strict rules for mutual defense and formal treaties.

Where does loyalty begin?

The Quran breaks traditional family bonds by making faith the absolute center of allegiance. Believers are explicitly commanded not to take their own fathers and brothers as allies if those relatives prefer disbelief to faith; crossing this line is defined as an act of wrongdoing (9:23). The primary protective bond exists solely among those who share the same spiritual foundation. Taking disbelievers as protectors and allies instead of believers is framed as a self-indictment, with the text asking if those who do so want to offer God "clear proof" against themselves (4:144).

How are factions and outsiders handled?

The text addresses the specific groups interacting with the early Muslims, directly confronting internal confusion over allegiances. Regarding the hypocrites, the Quran challenges believers who were "divided in two" over them, asking if they wanted to guide those whom God Himself had rejected and left to stray for their actions (4:88). The Prophet is told he will never find the way for someone God has left to stray. Because these hypocrites secretly wished the Muslims would reject faith and become exactly like them, believers are forbidden from taking them as allies or supporters until they physically migrate for God's cause (4:89). If they turn on the believers, the command is to seize and kill them wherever they are encountered.

Similarly rigid lines are drawn regarding the People of the Book. The Quran instructs believers not to take Jews and Christians as allies, noting that "they are allies only to each other" (5:51). The text warns that anyone who relies on them as an ally effectively becomes one of them, stating that God does not guide such wrongdoers.

When do treaties override faith?

While restricting spiritual and protective allegiance, the Quran upholds the absolute sanctity of formal agreements. Those who believed, emigrated to Medina, and struggled for God’s cause with their possessions and persons, alongside those who gave them refuge and help, are declared direct allies of one another (8:72). The community holds no obligation to protect believers who chose not to emigrate until they finally do so.

However, if those non-emigrating Muslims face persecution and seek help, it is a strict duty to assist them, but with one major exception. The community is forbidden from breaking an existing treaty with another people in order to help oppressed Muslims (8:72). Honoring pacts extends directly to idolaters. For those who made a treaty with the Muslims at the Sacred Mosque, believers are commanded to remain true to them for as long as the idolaters remain true to their word, because God loves those who are mindful of Him (9:7). The believers cannot strike against a people with whom they hold a treaty, no matter the cries of distant Muslims, because God sees all that you do (8:72).

4:88 An-Nisa

[Believers], why are you divided in two about the hypocrites, when God Himself has rejected them because of what they have done? Do you want to guide those God has left to stray? If God leaves anyone to stray, you [Prophet] will never find the way for him.

4:89 An-Nisa

They would dearly like you to reject faith, as they themselves have done, to be like them. So do not take them as allies until they migrate [to Medina] for God’s cause. If they turn [on you], then seize and kill them wherever you encounter them. Take none of them as an ally or supporter.

4:139 An-Nisa

Do those who ally themselves with the disbelievers rather than the believers seek power through them? In reality all power is God’s to give.

4:144 An-Nisa

You who believe, do not take the disbelievers as allies and protectors instead of the believers: do you want to offer God clear proof against you?

5:51 Al-Ma'idah

You who believe, do not take the Jews and Christians as allies:they are allies only to each other. Anyone who takes them as an ally becomes one of them- God does not guide such wrongdoers-

8:72 Al-Anfal

Those who believed and emigrated [to Medina] and struggled for God’s cause with their possessions and persons, and those who gave refuge and help, are all allies of one another. As for those who believed but did not emigrate, you are not responsible for their protection until they have done so. But if they seek help from you against persecution, it is your duty to assist them, except against people with whom you have a treaty: God sees all that you do.

9:7 At-Tawbah

How could there be a treaty with God and His Messenger for such idolaters? But as for those with whom you made a treaty at the Sacred Mosque, so long as they remain true to you, be true to them; God loves those who are mindful of Him.

9:23 At-Tawbah

Believers, do not take your fathers and brothers as allies if they prefer disbelief to faith: those of you who do so are doing wrong.
