Greed

33 verses

The Quran frames the desire for wealth not merely as a social friction, but as a visual hazard, repeatedly instructing believers not to "gaze longingly" at the enjoyments and finery given to others (20:131). When acquired wealth, fears of declining trade, and beloved dwellings become dearer to a person than God and the struggle in His cause, they are told simply to wait for His punishment (9:24).

How does the Quran address coveting what others have?

Covetousness is fundamentally tied to misdirected desire; as Abd al-Qahir al-Jurjani notes (درج الدرر في تفسير الآي والسور ط الفكر, 1/ 246), such desire represents a total redirection of one's concern toward an object. The Quran addresses this internal fixation directly, commanding men and women not to covet the specific portions God has granted to others, affirming that both genders have the portion they have rightfully earned (4:32). Instead of looking at the worldly advantages of disbelievers with grief or longing, believers are told to lower their wings in humility over one another (15:88). The outward display of wealth is explicitly identified as a test for its possessors, with the reminder that the provision granted by the Lord is inherently better and more lasting than any worldly finery (20:131).

What are the limits on acquiring and spending wealth?

Greed manifests in both the wrongful taking and the reckless dispersion of possessions. Believers are forbidden from consuming each other's wealth unjustly, restricted instead to trade conducted by mutual consent (4:29). Transgressing this boundary through hostility and injustice guarantees suffering in the Fire (4:30). The text also condemns those who betray God, the Messenger, and the trusts placed in them by other people (8:27).

Specifically, the Quran singles out rabbis and monks who wrongfully consume people's possessions and hoard gold and silver rather than giving in God's cause, promising them a grievous punishment (9:34). Ibn Kathir identifies this hoarding and the alteration of truth for material gain as a form of consuming a "small price" or base greed Conversely, the text commands justice, doing good, and generosity toward relatives (16:90), while warning that those who squander wealth become the brothers of Satan, who is entirely ungrateful to his Lord (17:27).

Can wealth itself become a punishment?

Material accumulation is frequently misinterpreted as divine favor, but the Quran presents a stark reversal of this assumption. The Prophet is instructed not to let the possessions and children of those who turn away impress him (9:55, 9:85). Rather than being signs of success, these material blessings are the very instruments through which God intends to punish them in this world. The ultimate tragedy of this punishment is spiritual: the fixation on wealth ensures that their souls depart while they remain in a state of disbelief (9:85).

The antidote to avarice lies in redirecting reliance away from the possessions of others and toward the source of all provision. Instead of fixing a longing gaze upon the temporary tests given to others, believers are instructed to ask God for some of His bounty, for He has full knowledge of everything (4:32).

4:29 An-Nisa

You who believe, do not wrongfully consume each other’s wealth but trade by mutual consent. Do not kill each other, for God is merciful to you.

4:30 An-Nisa

If any of you does these things, out of hostility and injustice, We shall make him suffer Fire: that is easy for God.

4:32 An-Nisa

Do not covet what God has given to some of you more than others- men have the portion they have earned; and women the portion they have earned- you should rather ask God for some of His bounty: He has full knowledge of everything.

8:27 Al-Anfal

Believers, do not betray God and the Messenger, or knowingly betray [other people’s] trust in you.

9:24 At-Tawbah

Say [Prophet], ‘If your fathers, sons, brothers, wives, tribes, the wealth you have acquired, the trade which you fear will decline, and the dwellings you love are dearer to you than God and His Messenger and the struggle in His cause, then wait until God brings about His punishment.’ God does not guide those who break away.

9:34 At-Tawbah

Believers, many rabbis and monks wrongfully consume people’s possessions and turn people away from God’s path. [Prophet], tell those who hoard gold and silver instead of giving in God’s cause that they will have a grievous punishment:

9:55 At-Tawbah

So [Prophet] do not let their possessions or their children impress you: through these God intends to punish them in this world and for their souls to depart while they disbelieve.

9:85 At-Tawbah

Do not let their possessions and their children impress you: God means to punish them through these in this world, and that their souls should depart while they disbelieve.

15:88 Al-Hijr

Do not look longingly at the good things We have given some to enjoy. Do not grieve over the [disbelievers], but lower your wings over the believers

16:90 An-Nahl

God commands justice, doing good, and generosity towards relatives and He forbids what is shameful, blameworthy, and oppressive. He teaches you, so that you may take heed.

17:27 Al-Isra

those who squander are the brothers of Satan, and Satan is most ungrateful to his Lord-

20:131 Taha

and do not gaze longingly at what We have given some of them to enjoy, the finery of this present life: We test them through this, but the provision of your Lord is better and more lasting.

25:67 Al-Furqan

They are those who are neither wasteful nor niggardly when they spend, but keep to a just balance;

28:76 Al-Qasas

Qarun was one of Moses’ people, but he oppressed them. We had given him such treasures that even their keys would have weighed down a whole company of strong men. His people said to him, ‘Do not gloat, for God does not like people who gloat.

33:28 Al-Ahzab

Prophet, say to your wives,‘If your desire is for the present life and its finery, then come, I will make provision for you and release you with kindness,

57:20 Al-Hadid

Bear in mind that the present life is just a game, a diversion, an attraction, a cause of boasting among you, of rivalry in wealth and children. It is like plants that spring up after the rain: their growth at first delights the sowers, but then you see them wither away, turn yellow, and become stubble. There is terrible punishment in the next life as well as forgiveness and approval from God; the life of this world is only an illusory pleasure.

63:9 Al-Munafiqun

Believers, do not let your wealth and your children distract you from remembering God: those who do so will be the ones who lose.

64:15 At-Taghabun

Your wealth and your children are only a test for you. There is great reward with God:

68:14 Al-Qalam

Just because he has wealth and sons,

71:12 Nuh

He will give you wealth and sons; He will provide you with gardens and rivers.

71:22 Nuh

No indeed! You will come to know.

102:4 At-Takathur

No indeed! In the end you will come to know.

102:5 At-Takathur

No indeed! If only you knew for certain.

102:6 At-Takathur

You will most definitely see Hellfire,

104:2 Al-Humazah

who amasses riches, counting them over,

104:3 Al-Humazah

thinking they will make him live for ever.

111:2 Al-Masad

Neither his wealth nor his gains will help him:
