When travellers pulled a boy from a well in Canaan, they rejoiced and hid him "like a piece of merchandise" (12:19), reducing a prophet to a tradable asset. Throughout its verses, the Quran addresses physical commodities and wealth not merely as economic units, but as strict tests of justice and spiritual priority. Tangible goods represent both a legally protected right in human dealings and a severe temptation when their pursuit overrides moral bounds.
How does the Quran regulate trade and commodities? The text firmly binds market ethics to monotheism. When the prophet Shuayb is sent to the people of Midian, his initial call to worship God is immediately followed by a command to "give full measure and weight" (7:85). Market fairness operates as a civilizational imperative; Shuayb warns his people not to "undervalue people's goods" or withhold things that are rightly theirs, linking commercial fraud directly to causing "corruption in the land after it has been set in order" (7:85, 11:85). This strict prohibition against depriving people of their rightful property (26:183) extends to domestic legal matters, establishing an incumbent duty on those mindful of God to make a proper bequest of their wealth to parents and close relatives (2:180).
What are the "fleeting gains" of the lower world? The terminology for goods frequently shifts into warnings about the transient nature of worldly wealth. Believers are repeatedly cautioned against sacrificing ethical mandates for the "chance gains of this life" (4:94). This applied forcefully to early military engagements, where God reproached Muslims for desiring "the transient goods of this world" over the Hereafter—such as taking captives before decisively conquering a battlefield (8:67), or dismissing a stranger's greeting of peace simply to seize their belongings (4:94).
The pursuit of short-term material gain is identified as the root of severe religious and social abuses. The Quran condemns earlier generations who inherited Scripture but compromised its laws for "the fleeting gains of this lower world," falsely assuming they would automatically be forgiven (7:169). Socially, it outlaws exploiting vulnerable people for profit, commanding masters not to force their slave-girls into prostitution in a "quest for the short-term gains of this world," urging them instead to write contracts of freedom and supply them with some of the wealth God has provided (24:33).
How do traded goods function in the story of Joseph? Physical merchandise drives critical turns in the narrative of Joseph. After surviving his initial enslavement as mere inventory (12:19), he later controls the granaries of Egypt. When his brothers come for rations, he covertly orders his servants to place their traded goods back into their saddlebags (12:62). As al-Wahidi notes (التفسير البسيط, 12/ 165), returning their commodities was a calculated measure to ensure they recognized the gesture and were motivated to return to Egypt. Years later, when a royal cup is found in Benjamin's bag, Joseph insists on strict legal equity, refusing to detain anyone other than the specific person upon whom the property was found (12:79).
The Quran treats material goods neither as inherently evil nor as ultimate goals, but as immediate tests of human conduct. Whether measuring out grain in a marketplace, writing a bequest, or resisting the urge to seize battlefield spoils, believers are held to a standard where equity outranks profit. The final assessment rests on recognizing the limits of earthly commodities, for as God warns those tempted by immediate spoils, "God has plenty of gains for you" (4:94).

it is prescribed that he should make a proper bequest to parents and close relatives- a duty incumbent on those who are mindful of God.
So, you who believe, be careful when you go to fight in God’s way, and do not say to someone who offers you a greeting of peace, ‘You are not a believer,’ out of desire for the chance gains of this life- God has plenty of gains for you. You yourself were in the same position [once], but God was gracious to you, so be careful: God is fully aware of what you do.
To the people of Midian We sent their brother, Shuayb. He said, ‘My people, serve God: you have no god other than Him. A clear sign has come to you from your Lord. Give full measure and weight and do not undervalue people’s goods; do not cause corruption in the land after it has been set in order: this is better for you, if you are believers.
and they were succeeded by generations who, although they inherited the Scripture, took the fleeting gains of this lower world, saying, ‘We shall be forgiven,’ and indeed taking them again if other such gains came their way. Was a pledge not taken from them, writ-ten in the Scripture, to say nothing but the truth about God? And they have studied its contents well. For those who are mindful of God, the Hereafter is better. ‘Why do you not use your reason?’
It is not right for a prophet to take captives before he has conquered the battlefield. You [people] desire the transient goods of this world, but God desires the Hereafter [for you]- God is mighty and wise-
My people, in fairness, give full measure and weight. Do not withhold from people things that are rightly theirs, and do not spread corruption in the land.
Some travellers came by. They sent someone to draw water and he let down his bucket. ‘Good news!’ he exclaimed. ‘Here is a boy!’ They hid him like a piece of merchandise- God was well aware of what they did-
Joseph said to his servants, ‘Put their [traded] goods back into their saddlebags, so that they may recognize them when they go back to their family, and [be eager to] return.’
He replied, ‘God forbid that we should take anyone other than the person on whom we found our property: that would be unjust of us.’
Those who are unable to marry should keep chaste until God gives them enough out of His bounty. If any of your slaves wish to pay for their freedom, make a contract with them accordingly, if you know they have good in them, and give them some of the wealth God has given you. Do not force your slave-girls into prostitution, when they themselves wish to remain honourable, in your quest for the short-term gains of this world, although, if they are forced, God will be forgiving and merciful to them.
do not deprive people of what is theirs. Do not spread corruption on earth.
