Sudden tremors in the quiet of the night left entire communities lying lifeless in their homes by morning (7:78). The physical ground beneath human feet is typically taken for granted as an immovable foundation, but the Quran portrays the earth as a highly responsive instrument of Divine command. Rather than a permanently stable floor, the crust of the earth is a surface that can open, swallow, or violently shudder to dismantle human plans in an instant.
How did earthquakes punish past nations? The verses detailing the destruction of past civilizations share a chillingly consistent aftermath: an abrupt seizure followed by absolute silence. When peoples continuously rejected their prophets and felt secure in their daily routines, the earth itself was turned against them. The text repeats a stark description of this penalty: the earthquake overtook them, and "by the next morning they were lying dead in their homes" (29:37, 7:91). This destruction bypasses all human defenses. God describes how previous generations schemed and built, only for their structures to fail entirely; God attacked the very foundations of what they built, causing the roof to fall upon them, delivering punishment from directions they never anticipated (16:26). In other instances, complete devastation arrived through a deafening blast that annihilated groups like Thamud (69:5).
What warnings are given to those walking the earth today? The sheer scale of geological forces is presented as a direct check on human pride. The Quran explicitly commands humanity not to strut arrogantly about the earth, reminding people of their severe physical limitations: "you cannot break it open, nor match the mountains in height" (17:37). The perceived safety of solid ground is an illusion for those who ignore their Creator. The verses repeatedly ask those who feel secure on land if they are truly safe from the ground opening beneath their feet. "Are you sure that He who is in Heaven will not make the earth swallow you up with a violent shudder?" (67:16). Whether they are returning to dry land after a journey (17:68) or simply failing to observe the heavens and the earth in front of them, arrogant individuals are warned that God could easily make the earth swallow them if He wished (34:9).
What is the final earthquake? While historical quakes destroyed specific towns, the Day of Judgment is heralded by a planetary convulsion. The event is announced with absolute finality: "When the earth is shaken violently in its [last] quaking" (99:1). Classical scholars closely analyzed the specific phrasing used to describe this moment. Ibn Juzayy al-Kalbi (al-Tashil li-Ulum al-Tanzil, 4/741) explains that attributing the earthquake directly to the earth itself—calling it "its quaking"—serves to amplify the sheer terror of the event, indicating a tremor proportionate to the planet's massive size. The vocabulary itself mirrors this physical reality; as Ismail Haqqi (Ruh al-Bayan, 10/492) points out, the repetition of letters in the Arabic word zilzal reflects the consecutive, repeated violence of the slipping ground. Al-Tabari (Jami al-bayan, 18/562) further notes that the term is the direct verbal noun derived precisely from the action of shaking the earth violently.
Even for believers, the trembling of the earth serves as a severe trial of faith. When seventy men chosen by Moses were suddenly seized by a violent trembling, Moses immediately recognized the tremor as a Divine test. He pleaded for mercy, acknowledging that through such trials God causes whoever He wills to stray and guides whoever He wills (7:155). The physical world remains entirely obedient to its Maker, capable of terrifying shifts to instill awareness. When God made the mountain loom high above the children of Israel like a dark shadow, they were convinced it would fall and crush them, leaving them with a command to hold fast to the revelation they had been given and remember what it contains so that they might remain conscious of God (7:171).

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلرَّجْفَةُ فَأَصْبَحُوا۟ فِى دَارِهِمْ جَـٰثِمِينَ

وَٱخْتَارَ مُوسَىٰ قَوْمَهُۥ سَبْعِينَ رَجُلًا لِّمِيقَـٰتِنَا ۖ فَلَمَّآ أَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلرَّجْفَةُ قَالَ رَبِّ لَوْ شِئْتَ أَهْلَكْتَهُم مِّن قَبْلُ وَإِيَّـٰىَ ۖ أَتُهْلِكُنَا بِمَا فَعَلَ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ مِنَّآ ۖ إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّا فِتْنَتُكَ تُضِلُّ بِهَا مَن تَشَآءُ وَتَهْدِى مَن تَشَآءُ ۖ أَنتَ وَلِيُّنَا فَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا وَٱرْحَمْنَا ۖ وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلْغَـٰفِرِينَ
Moses chose from his people seventy men for Our appointment, and when they were seized by trembling, he prayed, ‘My Lord, if You had chosen to do so, You could have destroyed them long before this, and me too, so will You now destroy us for what the foolish among us have done? This is only a trial from You- through it, You cause whoever You will to stray and guide whoever You will- and You are our Protector, so forgive us and have mercy on us. You are the best of those who forgive.
۞ وَإِذْ نَتَقْنَا ٱلْجَبَلَ فَوْقَهُمْ كَأَنَّهُۥ ظُلَّةٌ وَظَنُّوٓا۟ أَنَّهُۥ وَاقِعٌۢ بِهِمْ خُذُوا۟ مَآ ءَاتَيْنَـٰكُم بِقُوَّةٍ وَٱذْكُرُوا۟ مَا فِيهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ
When We made the mountain loom high above them like a shadow, and they thought it would fall on them, We said, ‘Hold fast to what We have given you, and remember what it contains, so that you may remain conscious of God.’
قَدْ مَكَرَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ فَأَتَى ٱللَّهُ بُنْيَـٰنَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْقَوَاعِدِ فَخَرَّ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّقْفُ مِن فَوْقِهِمْ وَأَتَىٰهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
Those who went before them also schemed, but God attacked the very foundations of what they built. The roof fell down on them: punishment came on them from unimagined directions.
وَلَا تَمْشِ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مَرَحًا ۖ إِنَّكَ لَن تَخْرِقَ ٱلْأَرْضَ وَلَن تَبْلُغَ ٱلْجِبَالَ طُولًا
Do not strut arrogantly about the earth: you cannot break it open, nor match the mountains in height.
أَفَأَمِنتُمْ أَن يَخْسِفَ بِكُمْ جَانِبَ ٱلْبَرِّ أَوْ يُرْسِلَ عَلَيْكُمْ حَاصِبًا ثُمَّ لَا تَجِدُوا۟ لَكُمْ وَكِيلًا
Can you be sure that God will not have you swallowed up into the earth when you are back on land, or that He will not send a sandstorm against you? Then you will find no one to protect you.
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلرَّجْفَةُ فَأَصْبَحُوا۟ فِى دَارِهِمْ جَـٰثِمِينَ
They rejected him and so the earthquake overtook them. When morning came, they were lying dead in their homes.
أَفَلَمْ يَرَوْا۟ إِلَىٰ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ إِن نَّشَأْ نَخْسِفْ بِهِمُ ٱلْأَرْضَ أَوْ نُسْقِطْ عَلَيْهِمْ كِسَفًا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ ۚ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً لِّكُلِّ عَبْدٍ مُّنِيبٍ
Do they not think about what is in front of them and behind them in the heavens and earth? If We wished, We could make the earth swallow them, or make fragments from the heavens fall down upon them. There truly is a sign in this for every servant who turns back to God in repentance.
ءَأَمِنتُم مَّن فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ أَن يَخْسِفَ بِكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضَ فَإِذَا هِىَ تَمُورُ
Are you sure that He who is in Heaven will not make the earth swallow you up with a violent shudder?
فَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَأُهْلِكُوا۟ بِٱلطَّاغِيَةِ
Thamud was destroyed by a deafening blast;
إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ زِلْزَالَهَا
When the earth is shaken violently in its [last] quaking,
