Duty
13 verses
Before a believer looks toward distant spiritual feats, the Quran anchors their practice in immediate material obligations to others. Financial care for parents, estranged spouses, and vulnerable children forms the bedrock of Islamic duty. Rather than framing these responsibilities as mere legal burdens, the text constantly links them to an inner state, defining them as incumbent upon "those who are mindful of God" and "those who do good."
How does the Quran assign family obligations?
The heaviest concentration of named duties centers on the vulnerable transitions of family life: birth, death, and divorce. Before death, the formulation of a proper bequest to parents and close relatives is explicitly commanded as a duty for the God-conscious (2:180). When a marriage dissolves, financial responsibility remains highly structured. Fathers must bear the clothing and maintenance of nursing mothers in a fair manner, while mothers are encouraged to suckle their children for two whole years if they wish to complete the term (2:233). If the father dies, this exact financial duty is incumbent upon his heir. The text establishes a core principle of fairness here: mutual consent and consultation can allow for early weaning or hiring a wet nurse, provided payment is agreed upon fairly, because no mother or father should be made to suffer harm on account of their child, and no one is burdened with more than they can bear (2:233).
Divorce carries its own strict financial duties, ensuring women are not left destitute. Even if a marriage was unconsummated and no bride-gift was fixed, husbands are obligated to make fair provision—the wealthy according to his means, and the poor according to his (2:236). Providing such maintenance to divorced women stands as a non-negotiable duty for those mindful of God (2:241).
What duties are owed to God and the community?
Beyond the household, obligations scale outward to the Creator and the wider body of believers. Pilgrimage to the Sacred House is defined as a duty owed directly to God, required specifically of people who have the physical and financial ability to undertake the journey (3:97). The verse immediately clarifies that while this is a human duty, God Himself has no need of anyone. Prophets model the weight of divine responsibility in their public speech; confronting Pharaoh, Moses declares himself duty-bound to say nothing about God except the truth, presenting a clear sign to demand the release of the Children of Israel (7:104-105).
In the geopolitical sphere, the duty to protect fellow believers is fierce but highly regulated. Believers who emigrated and struggled with their possessions and persons are allies to those who gave them refuge (8:72). Believers who did not emigrate are not owed protection until they do so; however, if they face persecution and seek assistance, the community is duty-bound to help them. Yet, the Quran places a strict legal boundary on this political duty: believers cannot intervene against a people with whom they hold an active treaty (8:72).
Does God take upon Himself any duty?
While human duties are often tests of obedience and financial sacrifice, the Quran presents God as willingly binding Himself to a duty toward His creation. Recalling the earlier messengers sent to their respective peoples with clear proofs, the Creator states unequivocally that after punishing the evildoers, He makes it His own duty to help the believers (30:47).
True fulfillment of human obligation rests not in supplying the Creator with material gain, but in cultivating steadfastness. Believers are told to order their people to pray and to remain steadfast in it themselves, grounded in the knowledge that God requires no provision from them (20:132). He already provides for them, reserving the rewards of the Hereafter entirely for the devout.

it is prescribed that he should make a proper bequest to parents and close relatives- a duty incumbent on those who are mindful of God.
Mothers suckle their children for two whole years, if they wish to complete the term, and clothing and maintenance must be borne by the father in a fair manner. No one should be burdened with more than they can bear: no mother shall be made to suffer harm on account of her child, nor any father on account of his. The same duty is incumbent on the father’s heir. If, by mutual consent and consultation, the couple wish to wean [the child], they will not be blamed, nor will there be any blame if you wish to engage a wet nurse, provided you pay as agreed in a fair manner. Be mindful of God, knowing that He sees everything you do.
You will not be blamed if you divorce women when you have not yet consummated the marriage or fixed a bride-gift for them, but make fair provision for them, the rich according to his means and the poor according to his- this is a duty for those who do good.
Divorced women shall also have such maintenance as is considered fair: this is a duty for those who are mindful of God.
there are clear signs in it; it is the place where Abraham stood to pray; whoever enters it is safe. Pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed to God by people who are able to undertake it. Those who reject this [should know that] God has no need of anyone.
Moses said, ‘Pharaoh, I am a messenger from the Lord of all the Worlds,
duty-bound to say nothing about God but the truth, and I have brought you a clear sign from your Lord. Let the Children of Israel go with me.’
Those who believed and emigrated [to Medina] and struggled for God’s cause with their possessions and persons, and those who gave refuge and help, are all allies of one another. As for those who believed but did not emigrate, you are not responsible for their protection until they have done so. But if they seek help from you against persecution, it is your duty to assist them, except against people with whom you have a treaty: God sees all that you do.
[Prophet], never pray in that mosque. You should rather pray in a mosque founded from its first day on consciousness of God: in this mosque there are men who desire to grow in purity- God loves those who seek to purify themselves.
Order your people to pray, and pray steadfastly yourself. We are not asking you to give Us provision; We provide for you, and the rewards of the Hereafter belong to the devout.
Before you [Muhammad], We sent mes-sengers, each to their own people: they brought them clear proofs and then We punished the evildoers. We make it Our duty to help the believers.
God has increased the guidance of those who follow the right path, and given them their awareness [of Him].
People, We created you all from a single man and a single woman, and made you into races and tribes so that you should recognize one another. In God’s eyes, the most honoured of you are the ones most mindful of Him: God is all knowing, all aware.
