Blood

الدم

9 verses

When God informed the angels of His intent to place a successor on earth, their immediate fear was that this new creation would cause damage and shed blood (2:30). From the very dawn of human history in the text, blood is recognized as a profound force. It operates as a marker of human vulnerability and violence, a biological marvel, and a boundary line for ritual purity and diet.

Is blood forbidden to consume?

The Quran explicitly prohibits the consumption of blood, grouping it alongside carrion, the meat of pigs, and animals slaughtered in the name of anything other than God (5:3). This dietary restriction applies strictly under normal circumstances, though God permits exceptions for those driven by starvation, provided they have no intention of doing wrong. Classical exegetes clarify the precise nature of this prohibition; as noted in Al-Tafsir al-Wasit (1/262), the forbidden substance is specifically flowing or poured-out blood.

In the context of ritual animal sacrifice, the text fundamentally shifts focus away from the physical substance itself. While pagan traditions often sought to appease deities by offering the blood of slaughtered animals at altars, the Quran insists that God requires no such physical appeasement. During the rites of sacrifice, believers are reminded that neither the meat nor the blood of these animals ever reaches God (22:37). The act is instead an expression of gratitude for divine guidance.

How does the Quran describe blood in biology?

Beyond laws and rituals, blood is highlighted as part of the intricate machinery of life. In a striking biological image, believers are instructed to draw a lesson from livestock, which produce pure, sweet milk from bellies that also contain waste matter and blood (16:66). The stark contrast between the unpalatable internal fluids and the nourishing milk is presented as a sign of divine precision.

Blood also appears in descriptions of human embryonic development. The revelation states that man was created from a "clinging form" (96:2). Commenting on this early stage of human development, Siddiq Hasan Khan (Nayl al-Maram, 379) explains that this clinging state refers to fresh, congealed blood that forms in the womb.

What role does blood play in human relations and history?

The social weight of blood ties is firmly codified in the community of believers. While the bonds of faith among the early Muslims and emigrants were vital, the Scripture establishes that blood-relatives hold a stronger, primary claim over one another in matters of mutual duty and inheritance (33:6).

Yet, the physical presence of blood is also tied to human treachery. When the brothers of Joseph attempted to cover up their crime, they brought their father his shirt, deceptively stained with fake blood (12:18). The false blood failed to convince Jacob, who recognized immediately that their souls had prompted them to do wrong, choosing instead to seek help from God alone to bear the deception.

The Quran acknowledges the necessity of blood in the womb to form human life and honors the familial bonds it cements across generations. Yet when human beings approach the divine through offerings, the physical liquid holds no sacred power of its own; it is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches God, but only their piety (22:37).

2:30 Al-Baqarah

[Prophet], when your Lord told the angels, ‘I am putting a successor on earth,’ they said, ‘How can You put someone there who will cause damage and bloodshed, when we celebrate Your praise and proclaim Your holiness?’ but He said, ‘I know things you do not.’

3:14 Ali 'Imran

The love of desirable things is made alluring for men- women, children, gold and silver treasures piled up high, horses with fine markings, livestock, and farmland- these may be the joys of this life, but God has the best place to return to.

5:3 Al-Ma'idah

You are forbidden to eat carrion; blood; pig’s meat; any animal over which any name other than God’s has been invoked; any animal strangled, or victim of a violent blow or a fall, or gored or savaged by a beast of prey, unless you still slaughter it [in the correct manner]; or anything sacrificed on idolatrous altars. You are also forbidden to allot shares [of meat] by drawing marked arrows -a heinous practice- today the disbelievers have lost all hope that you will give up your religion. Do not fear them: fear Me. Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My blessing upon you, and chosen as your religion islam: [total devotion to God]; but if any of you is forced by hunger to eat forbidden food, with no intention of doing wrong, then God is most forgiving and merciful.

12:18 Yusuf

and they showed him his shirt, deceptively stained with blood. He cried, ‘No! Your souls have prompted you to do wrong! But it is best to be patient: from God alone I seek help to bear what you are saying.’

16:66 An-Nahl

In livestock, too, you have a lesson- We give you a drink from the contents of their bellies, between waste matter and blood, pure milk, sweet to the drinker.

22:37 Al-Hajj

It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches God but your piety. He has subjected them to you in this way so that you may glorify God for having guided you. Give good news to those who do good:

33:6 Al-Ahzab

The Prophet is more protective towards the believers than they are themselves, while his wives are their mothers. In God’s Scripture, blood-relatives have a stronger claim than other believers and emigrants, though you may still bestow gifts on your proteges. All this is written in the Scripture.

37:158 As-Saffat

They claim that He has kinship with the jinn, yet the jinn themselves know that they will be brought before Him.

96:2 Al-'Alaq

He created manfrom a clinging form.
