Consuming the wealth of an orphan unjustly is not merely categorized as theft; the Quran describes it as the physical act of swallowing fire into one's own belly, a direct precursor to burning in the blazing Flame (4:10). The Arabic term for this fire, al-Sa'ir, appears twenty-four times in the text. As al-Tabari notes (Tafsir al-Tabari, 8/483), the word takes the grammatical form of something actively kindled and fueled, representing a state of intense, continuous combustion. Early scholars recognized it as a specific, terrifying domain; Sa'id bin Jubayr described al-Sa'ir as a distinct valley of heat within the broader geography of Hell (Mawsu'at al-Tafsir al-Ma'thur, 6/102). While the word is once applied to the earthly pyre built by idolaters attempting to burn Abraham (37:97), it primarily names the ultimate destination prepared for those who reject revelation.
Who enters the Blaze?
The Quran specifically links this fueled fire to active opposition and denial. It is the prepared outcome for those who reject faith and deny divine messages (5:10, 33:64). The text divides humanity based on this acceptance: while some believe in the revelation, others turn away from it, for whom Hell blazes fiercely enough (4:55). This denial frequently manifests as a rejection of accountability, specifically denying the coming of the Hour, for which the blazing fire has been explicitly prepared (25:11). The text emphasizes that those who strive in vain to defeat God’s messages are destined for the Blaze (22:51).
Blindly clinging to ancestral tradition offers no protection from this fate. When individuals are told to follow what God has sent down, but choose instead to follow the practices of their forefathers, the Quran challenges the logic of their obedience—especially when it is Satan calling them toward the suffering of the Blazing Flame (31:21).
The enemy's invitation
Satan's relationship with humanity is defined entirely by his destination. He is fated to lead astray anyone who takes his side, guiding them directly to this intense suffering (22:4). Because his sole invitation is for his followers to enter the blazing fire, the text issues a concrete command: Satan is an enemy, so treat him as an enemy (35:6).
The threat of the Blaze also functioned as an immediate deterrent in the unseen world. During the reign of Solomon, jinn worked under his control by divine permission, with the strict condition that any who deviated from the command would immediately taste the suffering of the blazing flame (34:12). For those who ultimately enter it, their regret will be absolute, culminating in a declaration of their own ruin. As Ibn Abbas explained regarding the scriptural phrase declaring their fate, it means a total "distance" or being cast "away" for the companions of the Blaze (Masa'il Nafi', 140).
The terrifying physical reality of the Blaze dominates the Quran's depiction of the Day of Resurrection. Those whom God leaves to stray will find no protectors to intercede for them. They will be gathered lying entirely upon their faces, completely stripped of their faculties—blind, dumb, and deaf (17:97). Hell becomes their permanent home, engineered to deny them any eventual relief or cooling. Whenever the Fire goes down, We shall make it blaze more fiercely for them (17:97).
Verses

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَأْكُلُونَ أَمْوَٰلَ ٱلْيَتَـٰمَىٰ ظُلْمًا إِنَّمَا يَأْكُلُونَ فِى بُطُونِهِمْ نَارًا ۖ وَسَيَصْلَوْنَ سَعِيرًا
Those who consume the property of orphans unjustly are actually swallowing fire into their own bellies: they will burn in the blazing Flame.
فَمِنْهُم مَّنْ ءَامَنَ بِهِۦ وَمِنْهُم مَّن صَدَّ عَنْهُ ۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِجَهَنَّمَ سَعِيرًا
but some of them believed in it and some turned away from it. Hell blazes fiercely enough.
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَكَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْجَحِيمِ
those who reject faith and deny Our revelations will inhabit the blazing Fire.
وَمَن يَهْدِ ٱللَّهُ فَهُوَ ٱلْمُهْتَدِ ۖ وَمَن يُضْلِلْ فَلَن تَجِدَ لَهُمْ أَوْلِيَآءَ مِن دُونِهِۦ ۖ وَنَحْشُرُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ عَلَىٰ وُجُوهِهِمْ عُمْيًا وَبُكْمًا وَصُمًّا ۖ مَّأْوَىٰهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ ۖ كُلَّمَا خَبَتْ زِدْنَـٰهُمْ سَعِيرًا
[Prophet], anyone God guides is truly guided, and you will find no protector other than Him for anyone He leaves astray. On the Day of Resurrection We shall gather them, lying on their faces, blind, dumb, and deaf. Hell will be their Home. Whenever the Fire goes down, We shall make it blaze more fiercely for them.
كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِ أَنَّهُۥ مَن تَوَلَّاهُ فَأَنَّهُۥ يُضِلُّهُۥ وَيَهْدِيهِ إِلَىٰ عَذَابِ ٱلسَّعِيرِ
fated to lead astray those who take his side, and guide them to the suffering of the blazing flame.
وَٱلَّذِينَ سَعَوْا۟ فِىٓ ءَايَـٰتِنَا مُعَـٰجِزِينَ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْجَحِيمِ
but those who strive to oppose Our messages and try in vain to defeat Us are destined for the Blaze.
بَلْ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِٱلسَّاعَةِ ۖ وَأَعْتَدْنَا لِمَن كَذَّبَ بِٱلسَّاعَةِ سَعِيرًا
It is actually the coming of the Hour that they reject: We have prepared a blazing fire for those who reject the Hour.
وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱتَّبِعُوا۟ مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ قَالُوا۟ بَلْ نَتَّبِعُ مَا وَجَدْنَا عَلَيْهِ ءَابَآءَنَآ ۚ أَوَلَوْ كَانَ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ يَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ عَذَابِ ٱلسَّعِيرِ
When they are told, ‘Follow what God has sent down,’ they say: ‘We shall follow what we saw our forefathers following.’ What! Even if Satan is calling them to the suffering of the Blazing Flame?
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَعَنَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُمْ سَعِيرًا
God has rejected the disbelievers and prepared a blazing fire for them.
وَلِسُلَيْمَـٰنَ ٱلرِّيحَ غُدُوُّهَا شَهْرٌ وَرَوَاحُهَا شَهْرٌ ۖ وَأَسَلْنَا لَهُۥ عَيْنَ ٱلْقِطْرِ ۖ وَمِنَ ٱلْجِنِّ مَن يَعْمَلُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِۦ ۖ وَمَن يَزِغْ مِنْهُمْ عَنْ أَمْرِنَا نُذِقْهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ ٱلسَّعِيرِ
And [We subjected] the wind for Solomon. Its outward journey took a month, and its return journey likewise. We made a fountain of molten brass flow for him, and some of the jinn worked under his control with his Lord’s permission. If one of them deviated from Our command, We let him taste the suffering of the blazing flame.
إِنَّ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ فَٱتَّخِذُوهُ عَدُوًّا ۚ إِنَّمَا يَدْعُوا۟ حِزْبَهُۥ لِيَكُونُوا۟ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلسَّعِيرِ
Satan is your enemy––so treat him as an enemy––and invites his followers only to enter the blazing fire.
قَالُوا۟ ٱبْنُوا۟ لَهُۥ بُنْيَـٰنًا فَأَلْقُوهُ فِى ٱلْجَحِيمِ
They said, ‘Build a pyre and throw him into the blazing fire.’
وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْكَ قُرْءَانًا عَرَبِيًّا لِّتُنذِرَ أُمَّ ٱلْقُرَىٰ وَمَنْ حَوْلَهَا وَتُنذِرَ يَوْمَ ٱلْجَمْعِ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ ۚ فَرِيقٌ فِى ٱلْجَنَّةِ وَفَرِيقٌ فِى ٱلسَّعِيرِ
So We have revealed an Arabic Quran to you, in order that you may warn the capital city and all who live nearby. And warn [especially] about the Day of Gathering, of which there is no doubt, when some shall be in the Garden and some in the blazing Flame.
وَمَن لَّمْ يُؤْمِنۢ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ فَإِنَّآ أَعْتَدْنَا لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ سَعِيرًا
We have prepared a blazing Fire for those who do not believe in God and His Messenger.
فَقَالُوٓا۟ أَبَشَرًا مِّنَّا وَٰحِدًا نَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِذًا لَّفِى ضَلَـٰلٍ وَسُعُرٍ
they said, ‘What? A man? Why should we follow a lone man from amongst ourselves? That would be misguided; quite insane!
إِنَّ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ فِى ضَلَـٰلٍ وَسُعُرٍ
truly the wicked are misguided and quite insane––
وَلَقَدْ زَيَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنْيَا بِمَصَـٰبِيحَ وَجَعَلْنَـٰهَا رُجُومًا لِّلشَّيَـٰطِينِ ۖ وَأَعْتَدْنَا لَهُمْ عَذَابَ ٱلسَّعِيرِ
We have adorned the lowest heaven with lamps and made them [missiles] for stoning devils for whom We have also prepared the torment of a blazing fire.
وَقَالُوا۟ لَوْ كُنَّا نَسْمَعُ أَوْ نَعْقِلُ مَا كُنَّا فِىٓ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلسَّعِيرِ
They will say, ‘If only we had listened, or reasoned, we would not be with the inhabitants of the blazing fire,’ and
فَٱعْتَرَفُوا۟ بِذَنۢبِهِمْ فَسُحْقًا لِّأَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلسَّعِيرِ
they will confess their sins. Away with the inhabitants of the blazing fire!
ثُمَّ ٱلْجَحِيمَ صَلُّوهُ
lead him to burn in the blazing Fire,
كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ
But no! There is a raging flame
إِنَّآ أَعْتَدْنَا لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ سَلَـٰسِلَا۟ وَأَغْلَـٰلًا وَسَعِيرًا
We have prepared chains, iron collars, and blazing Fire for the disbelievers, but
وَإِذَا ٱلْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ
when Hell is made to blaze
وَيَصْلَىٰ سَعِيرًا
he will burn in the blazing Fire.
